Generation NEX: New Retro NES Console

I was looking through Sync magazine and noticed this Generation NEX NES console. Its not licensed by Nintendo, but its coming out in September. It has slots for US and Japanese games, comes with wireless controller capability right out of the box, rumble controllers (weird), and supposedly has better pin connections for that evil blinking screen. Depending on how it handles I might pick one up for use instead of my original NES.

Might be a collectible in the future.

That's pretty cool...

But isn't that illegal? I mean, that thing will play NES games which were only meant to be played on a NES console...

I think they are bending the law on this one. They are using their own technology and not the same internal components as the original NES.

I'm seriosuly tempted by this. I'll wait to see what others experience with it is first, though.

I believe the copyright protection or whatever on the NES has now expired, which is why quite a few of these "retro players" have cropped up in the last year or two. Sure, Nintendo has renewed protection on its franchises, but I believe the hardware itself can now legally be replicated.

I've seen this.

It would be cooler if it supported S-video/component output, and if the 2.4ghz controllers weren't so expensive.

They should ship this with one of their wireless contollers . . . another 30 after you get the console . . . ouch!

I plan on getting one and for me the coolest part is that the NES games load in the front . . . so this baby will only take up an 11/2 inches and with a wireless controller, I would play more . . . I now loathe cords and the NES takes up too much space to keep it set up all the time.

I think I've already seen these available, maybe it was another brand though, theres a store called Shakespeare's Video Works in a mall near me that had something that looks like the NEX and is also in blue color

Hmm, you don't happen to in CT, do you? There's a place I think called Shakespere's Video Works in the mall in Trumbull, I never see anyone go in there though, and it's just some creepy guy who wants 25 dollars for copies of Mario / Duckhunt for NES. He must have an inside connection in that mall, because there's no way he could still afford to rent that space after all these years despite his total lack of any buisness at all.

I wasn't aware that NES games were developed in 720p.

That guy was sued and is now royally ed.

Copyright lasts for far longer than 20 years anyway. Something like 75 years after the death of the original copywriter, correct?

s-video/component != 720p

S-video and component both look a lot better for 480i for a few different technical reasons (not worth sounding a/v geeky here). Especially on a big screen.

Well, I was only kidding. I just meant that it wasn't really needed.

Anyway, I'd be interesting in knowing if you wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to share.

This will be available in Europe to, right? My NES is busted up a bit (Sometimes doesn't play games when I want it to) so it'd be nice to be able to get my hands on one of these, nice slick DVD look, the pad looks much comfier (SNES design, yay!) and the wireless sounds awesome.
