Killer 7... Is it worth the $30

So I got some money to waste and I was wondering what other CAGs think of Killer 7. I'm aware of the niche-ness of this game, and I have had a track record of liking games that the majority of people didn't (Zelda II on NES anyone?), but the story and some character features piqued my interest.

I've read the reviews on some sites but i wanna know wut you guys think. Also insights on whether the PS2 or GC version is better would be cool too.

Curses! I had just typed up some rather long impressions and my browser crashed before I could submit it.

In summary:

-The gameplay itself is rather average. Not bad, but not anything worth writing home about. You could think of it as a very basic FPS with slightly better than average puzzles and not be far off.

-I love the on-rails movement, it saves you lots of needless searching once you get used to it.

-The story is the main attraction, but it's a mind-job. If you can't enjoy a game for its story or don't like whacked-out tales, this isn't the game for you. If you like that sort of thing, I highly reccomend it. When you're done, there's a very good plot analysis on GameFAQs that's worth checking out.

-It reminds me a lot of several animes I've watched. Not really in terms of plot but in the way the story is told. Think Lain, BoogiePop Phantom, and Paranoid Agent types of shows.

Personally, I love it. I could have done without some of the annoying voices of the dead characters. Lots of people are bitching about the "on-rails" system but it's not bad at all. A good quote from EGM is that it is "like Resident Evil: Dead Aim after 10 hits of LSD." This is very true. It does play like Dead Aim... run around, stop, get into first person and shoot people. And the LSD part.. yeah. To clarify it's like if you combined some VERY Japanese themes with a film noir look... and, well, dropped acid.

I really enjoyed the game, and am playing through for a second time right now. I think it's well worth $30, but if you are really unsure, try renting it, or waiting for the inevitable drop to $20. Having played both the ps2 and the gamecube version, I would strongly suggest getting the GCN one. The pauses and loading screens on the ps2 really annoyed me, which wasn't nearly as much of a problem on the gamecube.

Thanks for all the insights. It's pretty helpful to to hear it related to anime. I've heard good things about Paranoia Agent and I enjoy a good mind fuk every now and then. Kinda disappointed to hear about the gameplay, sounds like if Capcom refined it a little better, this game coulda blown up some more. But yeah if it doesn't it'll just drop in price more huh? Sucks about the loading times on PS2 since I usually prefer that controller, so it looks like the GC wins in that department.

Translation of Hand-in-Killer7

Hello.

My name is James Clinton Howell. I am the author of the Plot Analysis document on GameFAQs.com, IGN, and a number of other sites. I would like to let everyone know that two friends and I are translating Capcom's companion book, "Hand in Killer7," for the English-speaking Killer7 fanbase.

Eventually, the entire translation will be featured in my Plot Analysis FAQ. For now, you can read our current progress here:

I hope that you enjoy it.
