It wasn't every a whole game, but more of a tech demo for what the GameCube was capable of. Needless to say, many Zelda fans fell head over heels for it.

It was a tech demo released to show off the GCN hardware at Spaceworld 2000 (Japanese videogame conference put on by Nintendo). This game eventually turned into Windwaker, but it was never actually meant to be made into a full game.

There was an outcry for a new "real" Zelda after Windwaker was released, which is what Twilight Princess will be.
