im 49 minutes away from winning a dreamcast bundle on ebay. what does a vmu do and do i need one?

VMU stands for virtual memory unit and it is essentially a memory card with a small screen on it. If you already have a memory card for the Dreamcast you don't really need it but I advise to get it as they are quality memory cards (assuming they are first party) and if you don't own a memory card you cannot save your game.

Could also mean Visual Memory Unit. I would definitely recommend it, as it adds to the gameplay of certain games.

There are also a few different VMU games. I can only think of Sonic 1/2 and Power Stone give options to play games on the VMU. Maybe Soul Calibur. But most of the time, the battery is dead.

There is an easy guide on GameFAQ's to hook the VMU to a 4 pack of AA bateries. Really easy, and gives you 10+ hours of play. I would do that if the battery is dead. Cheap.

Skies of Arcadia has a mini game with the VMU too. Many games have little mini games you can play on it. The only downside, the batteries don't last very long and they take lithium watch batteries that cost about $5.00 to replace every couple months if you use it a lot. Considering a new VMU can still be found in the gamestores sometimes for $7.00, having to rebuy batteries for almost as much blows.

I think that there might be a football game that uses it so the other player can't see your plays.

The VMU batteries are expensive if you get them in a retail store, like $3 each. Go to eBay and buy them in bulk from a good seller. I got 50 of them for under $20 last year.

NFL 2k, I'm sure the later releases also used it.

VMU pretty much stands for the Sega brand memory cards for Dreamcast. The built-in screen is often used during games to show your health in adventure games, display ammo levels in FPS, choose plays in sports, etc. Even if you never play any of the standalone VMU mini-games, a Sega brand VMU is a good thing for any DC owner to have. The third party memory cards often don't have a mini-Game Boy type screen on them at all and are just good for saving.

Sega brand VMUs originally cost about $25 each when DC first came out, but Toys R Us now has new ones on clearance for $2.50 each, and I've seen then used for as little as $1 each. If you buy a DC, be sure to invest in a few VMUs if you see them cheap enough.

Trickstyle is another game that had a mini-vmu game, it was much like Snake for nokia series 30 phones. Not special, but a time killer.

I think Time Stalkers probably has some of the best VMU games. In the game you catch monsters (like Pokemon) and you can go to the shop and buy the VMU games there. One game is called Moonlighter and it basically lets you gain experience for you monsters. And it has another game thats a dungeon crawler kinda like the Wizardry games.

the batteries are 2030 same that saturn uses, my walmart sells them for 1.88
