* Free File is a free service offered by companies for taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $50,000 or less.
* Carefully review the free offer descriptions before starting your return. Individual company offers may be limited to specific states and income levels.
* Each company has a description of their eligibility criteria for preparing and e-filing your federal tax return for free.
* When choosing a company, be sure to link to the company's web site through IRS.gov. By going directly to a company's web site, you may not get the free service.
* You are under no obligation to buy any products or services.
* Telephone filing (Telefile) is no longer available. Many taxpayers who used this telephone service in the past may qualify to use Free File.

Available every year on IRS.gov website.

Free filing for people earning $50,000 or less thats pretty good info, it's $20,000 more than the one I linked to. That should take care of most young people.

Turbotax in my opinion is the better deal because it includes free e-file. Basic TT is $9.95, I paid $19 at Walmart the other day before I saw this.

Or you can use the free stuff online and be really cheap. LOL

With any of the IRS free file sponsers you don't have the software, it is all web based. I have been using these since it began a few years ago and it's great. If you are getting a refund, do the direct deposit, last year I got my refund 4 days after filing.

Note that the free-file options don't apply if you do the long form (itemized deductions for mortgage, donations, etc.)... that was the case last year, anyway. I went the paper route, in typical cheap-ass fashion, but the tax refunds took almost 12 weeks to be deposited. I'm considering software and e-filing this year, but I really need every $ that the purchase would consume. Drat.

This will be my third year filing through freetaxusa.com as recommended by the IRS website's list of free filers. I like it. It is straight forward, it does all of your work, you can itemize or standard deduct. If you are over $50,000 it costs $20 to file + $10 for state, which is still cheaper than taking it to H&R or buying their software.

I highly recommend going to the irs site and using the link to turbotax.
Since I make under 50k, its free. Been using it around 3-4 years now.
I got my w2 at work, and just emailed my wife the info, and when I got home I had the return already processed and due Feb 5. Not bad considering I put it in on 17th.

www.taxslayer.com

$10 for both federal AND state.

did it last year and got federal in under a week and state took a couple of weeks.

It was really easy and simple.
