Thx,cheapy for the info.I never knew there was a Forbidden Planet near Union Square.All the great game store disappearing in that area like TRU being converting to babyrus and Wiz Store.I hope they still have some great games left over when i get there.

is there another forbidden planet in manhattan? they used to be at a different location but it was practically across the street from where they are now.

Man, that's depressing. I work less than a block away. Hopefully it's a while before they shut their doors, because that discount is kind of weak, not anywhere near a liquidation sale.

Forbidden Planet used to be *THE* store to go to back in the 80's if you wanted Japanese Toys. That, and Kiukinito bookstore near Rockefeller Plaza (for manga).

I haven't been there in decades however........

forbidden planet isn't a game store, its a comic book shop that also sold games for a while, they're not closing down, just going to stop selling games.

I was under the impression that they were moving since their lease was up soon

OH! I misread. Well, that's ok then, their gaming section is really weak, and the prices are uniformly high. The only real plus is that they have imports on hand so you dont have to go all the way down to chi-town. Of course, their imports are also overpriced and the selection also sucks, so it's not really all that much more of a plus.

i hate it when the good mom and pop shops go under...

Me 2,it must be the overdose of over 50 gamestop and ebs combined in New York.Now if I ever want a new game,I either have to order online or take a risk of getting gut copies from gamestop or ebgames.I hate the guts copies they sometimes dont come out in mint condition

Yeah, I hate the new trend more and more. I used to get great games in *mint* or like new condition for great prices around here. As of late, I'm obligated to take trips to gamestop or ebgames, where most of the games are very scratched or have tons of stickers, and all sorts of glue.

It's been established that the store isnt shutting down, they're just not going to be offering games anymore. And Forbidden Planet is hardly a mom & pop shop, it's probably the biggest and best known comic shop in new york city.

"Highlights" indeed. I stopped by there today during work and that was literally all there was on the wall.

Their game section used to be the far back corner of the store, 2 glass display counters/cases, and the wall behind them. They were sharing space with the DVDs. Now, the DVDs have overrun the counters, and the only games on the rack were one copy of each of the games listed, along with Dragonball GT for 12.95, and that's about it. Literally like 4 games on the wall, hanging on display hooks randomly on a wall that used to have dozens on display.


I asked the guy stocking shelves, "So I take it you guys arent going to be stocking games anymore?" only to get a look from him that made me feel like I had asked if the sun was going to be rising tomorrow. :( "yeah."

To the guy earlier who asked about the store location, they did in fact move directly across the street from where they used to be. The old store was much bigger and nicer, but the new one isn't too shabby. I'm also much bigger than I was back then, so it could just be a matter of scale

hehe yeah my brother used to take me there when i was little and i'd always go straight downstairs to look at the zoids or whatever they were called

Its a sign of the times.

Back in the 80's, before the interweb, you needed oddball little shops like this with contacts in far-off lands to get oddball stuff that you couldn't get locally.
Japanese Manga, model kits, toys, etc. Forbidden Planet had it all....sadly at sky-high New York prices, but I digress.

Today...the world is a TINY, TINY PLACe thanks to the internet, broadband communication, and ebay.

The days of the "curio shop" like Forbidden Planet I think are coming to an end.

Today the smart shopowner has a warehouse (or just a place he can drop-ship from), a folding chair, a telephone and a webserver to handle his orders.

To be fair their prices sucked pretty hard for games.

It doesn't seem like Forbidden Planet is gettin out of gaming business.I went there yesterday and saw Pokemon Trozei for Ds.Their game selection is horrible.I only see 5 games total and most of those games already been posted.

See, they had a SECTION before. What makes you think that them being down to 5 titles on the wall doesnt mean they're getting out of the gaming biz? That's called a clearance sale.

I'd say that Midtown Comics is a better shop than Forbidden Planet.

Jim Hanley's Universe is, hands down, far and away, the best comic shop in New York City. It's not even a debate.

Forbidden Planet and Midtown are decent, if you only want this past months super hero and manga books, if you want anything beyond that say a small press of independent, you're screwed. Midtown, while being a beautiful shop, has next to nothing and it's hit or miss at Forbidden Planet, and the place is a mess. JHU has everything and you can always get the last three issues of whatever book you want at cover price as they never clear the shelves.

I was always wondered if FB ever actually sold games, I guess I got my answer.
