How to play MGO online?

I just got MGS3 last night and tried the online mode. I walked away kind of dissapointed. It seems everyone in this game runs and guns. I would try to use FPV and the guy running at me with the guns blazing seemed to hit me with better accuracy. And usually everytime I stop to aim, somone runs by with a shotgun and knocks me down and then shoots me while im down. This game seems like it would be better for 1vs1 or 2vs2 games.

So does anyone have tips to play well online? I did better by running around with the shotgun, but it just doesnt feel right to play it that way.

For starters, hold L1 to lock on. You can run around while doing this to circle strafe.

Why did they even bother with MGO? Just make a full crappy FPS instead of a half ass crappy FPS.

Yes and it's not a crappy FPS wanna be but the online part of this release is clearly a 2nd thought that was thrown in to compete with other titles. Without any of the good stuff MG fans have come to expect, what was the point?. If it's going to be online they should have made it similar to Splinter cell's online gameplay but with OF COURSE a metal gear feel. OP is 100% correct about the run and gun thing. It saddens me to see great titles like this ed with by the developers.

Have you played online yet? Seriously, it is lots of fun and the only things halfassed about the game is the manual and the third disc in the LE version. Sorry you don't like the game, but there are tons of us on here that do. Maybe you could start your own thread and crap all over it instead?

I haven't gotten this yet but I love MGS.

My tip would be to get better at hiding.

I'm not thread craping at all, the OP stated that he didn't like how it was run and gun,I agree and believe that the online is not in the spirit of MG. Agree or not it's just my opinion.

Holy shit, you can lock on?? Damn, i've been playing like crazy and wishing that the developers added that feature.

In response to the OP's problem, I completely feel you. In my first night of playing, my strategy basically consisted of me finding people, holding R1 to go into first person mode, and aiming for the kill. Unfortunately, since my dumb body would just be standing there, I would constantly get killed that way. Then I tried just running and gunning without any first person shooting and my results were a lot better. It's a shame really, because the game should be promoting careful shooting (especially considering that this is a "tactical espionage" game) and not just guns 'a blazing action.

The problem is that at it's heart, Metal Gear games are puzzle games. Especially the 2D originals. Now suddenly instead of AI, your enemies are real human beings who run around willy nilly. It's really not the online games FAULT, it's the people who play it who don't want to play it like a Metal Gear game.

Thanks for the reps. I will try that L1 thing out next time I play. We should all setup a small server for cags to use to play with each other. (if this hasnt been done already) Im looking to have smaller games with other cags.

My username is Panzerfaust if anyone wants to add me.

Haha, that is too funny. Konami should have spent a little more time on the manual or a tutorial for online. Does L1 lock on in the main game too?

Sometimes you run over food items in the maps and they give you more stamina. That's how many food itvems you've gotten.

Actually, what I've found is that the noobs and bad players will tend to run and gun most of the time, while the better and smarter players will use strategy to hide, find good spots to shoot from, and do less run and gunning than most. Plus, it all depends on the maps, as some don't offer that much opportunity to be all that strategic and the best way to survive is shoot the other team as much as possible.

Yeah, that's true. One of my favorite maps is the abandoned city streets level.

Anybody know if this level is supposed to be a preview of the street level seen in the MGS 4 trailer? I remember when I first tried the map, I was amazed at how similar it looked to the trailer map.
