PS3 Pricepoint

I just was reading about the price Sony thinks to tag on the PS3.
It supposed to be on the shelfs in europe for 499$ - 599$, which supposed to be about 612$ or 734$ in the US. (the source was Sony Computer Entertainment Europe VP George Fornay)
Well, how actually pays that much for a console? Even though it might be only a rumour still, but i doubt that it will hit the street for "just" 300$ or 400$.
If that comes true, i don't think i will get any time soon a PS3.
I let myself surprise if it will be less money, but it certainly will be more than i am willing to spend on a console.

Whats your guys opinion on the issue?
Would you pay actually a supposedly 600-700$ pricetag for a console?

sega saturn was how much at release in the states? 599?

i would pay 499 for the ps3 since it will pllay blue ray dvds.

im hoping its released at 399.99

Its going to be hard as hell to find no matter if its 400-500bucks anyways.

It was $399, and it dropped to $299 shortly after the PS1 launch.

I'd pay $500 max for the console itself. Of course, with it coming with an hdd I might pay a little more...I'm just going to pre-order it anyways and wait and see how much money I have by the time it comes out.

$500 is the max for me. I won't wait for a price drop, but I'll wait for the initial demand to go down and get one (I did the same thing with the 360).

I think the PS3 should be an Ebay exclusive for the first few months. Let the people willing to pay over $1000 for it have it, and let the money go to sony to subsidize a decent street price a little later.

like sony needs the money?

Im in favor of no "pre order" on consoles. Let the people who really want the system go out and wait in line for it.

I have no problem paying $500 for it. Hell thats the cost of a Toshiba HD-DVD player alone.

This is a brilliant idea. I had the wacky conspiracy theory that some of the people selling 360's on ebay were MS insiders, and I shall have a similar conspiracy theory once again!

Also, I will pay no more for any console than I will for the launch price of the Revolution, no matter how long it takes.

I think it's foolish to release at $400 because MS would probably just drop the premium to $300. Anyways $500 makes the console look "uber leet" to the newbs/fanboys out there. I doubt I would buy one at $500 unless they had Marvel VS Capcom 3 at launch and that will never happen.

i'd say so, yes. besides having to update all their computer systems or have the stores call up a central call center of some sort and communicate over the phone or something retarded just to keep people from buying their stuff, they'd also have to id everyone placing a preorder. it's not like it'd be hard to get a friend, spouse, sibling, etc to do another preorder for you anyway. it's a complete waste of time and it would only wind up in disarray for them.
