#1- Not listed anywhere on ps3 spec sheets.

#2- Would compromise the sales of psp a litle and sony does not want that.

#3- UMDs look like shit on the big screeen.

Of course, I'm drunk as hell but some of these are sure to make sense.

It would cost quite a bit to add a UMD player into the PS3, and to what benefit? The PS3 is to push Blu-Ray slaes, not UMDs. There might be some slight benfit in that people wouldn't feel as bad about plunking down $15 for a UMD movie if they knew it would play on their TV at home, but as someone already said the resolution wouldn't be that good and the cost would far outweigh any benefit.

I doubt it will be a feature of the system but I bet you will be able to hook your PSP up and watch a movie on the big screen... in horrible, horrible resolution...

why would it compromise the sales of a PSP.. the gameboy players for the SNES and gamecube never hurt the sales of the gameboy and gameboy advance

Ive read from a few places that UMD movies are actually a higher res/quality than a DVD, and they would look really good on a tv. I think it was in the IGN mail bag. Ill see if I can find it.

UMD resolution 480x272
DVD resolution 852 x 480 (WS) or 720 x 480 (FS)
VCR resolution 486 x 240

UMD would look like a VCR tape.

Thanks for the info.

While there's no way Sony will integrate a UMD player into the PS3, I really hope they do come out with low-cost UMD players. I have several UMDs that I don't have on DVD, and I'd like to be able to watch them with the entire family.

UMD movies are encoded to the same resolution as DVD: 720x480. The PSP downsamples that to the native resolution of the screen. It is a compressed file, though, so it would probably show some pixelation. I think where Sony cut the biggest corners is on the audio.

Wasn't it mentioned they were thinking about allowing UMD's to be played off of the PSP through the PS3 via USB or Wifi?

Nintendo had the Gameboy player, and that didn't compromise shit. People buy PSP's for portablity, not because there are major blockbuster games that are 100% exclusive. I don't think a UMD player on the PS3 would hurt PSP sales, and I actually think it could help them.

Ok I am not sure how this looks; do you know any one that has watched a UMD in 720x480? No you don't know anyone that has because it can't be done ATM. The only way ATM to watch a UMD is on a PSP that uses 480x272. I have looked at a lot of info on the UMD format at no one can say for sure if UMD compares to DVD. UMD uses MPEG-4 as far as I know and MPEG-4 < MPEG-2 (what DVD uses) as far as quality is concerned. The MPEG is a video and audio encoder that compresses the size of the file.

Please show me some links to prove me wrong, if you can find some from someone other then a message board fanboy please show me, I would like to read it.

yeah, i dont know why people think this wouldnt/shouldnt happen. personally, and im sure many others, would like to see this happen. it would drive umd and psp sales up. they could sale an add on a la the GBPlayer and make some money still. oh well, ill just get my hopes up.

They're saying that the UMD would have VCR-like quality if you played it through your tv screen, not on your PSP.
