New report on ps3 499 and 599 functions...
Following the announcement that Sony plans to launch two versions of the PS3, Phil Harrison has denied reports that the 20GB model will feature lower technical specs than the 60GB version. Phil harrison says "both versions will support high definition output: "It's just that the technical method of extracting audio and video from the devices is slightly different." |

Oh I hope this is true so I won't have to buy the 60GB for all the features.

Since I would probably hook this up to a normal old TV I'm thinking I could probably go with the cheaper version. I'll still probably wait for a drop though.

Sony always puts ports on their consoles that end up practically useless, like the parallel port on the PS1 and the Firewire on PS2.
The HDMI is much more useful than those ports, but I'll probably never use it, and neither will a large chunk of the audience. Everything they cut from the $500 package is useless to me, anyway. Now if they would only cut another hundred bucks from the price. |

The two machines do have significant differences. The $599 model offers a 60 GB hard drive. The $499 model has only a 20 GB hard drive and also lacks wi-fi capabilities, a memory card reader and an HDMI output for newer high definition televisions.
"We felt that if you want to save something on your Memory Stick, most people have those readers on their PC, which is easily adaptable to the PlayStation 3 with a USB cord," said Hirai. "The only difference is HDMI – and at this point, I don't think many people's TV's have that. The ultimate result, to my eyes anyway, is there's not a discernable difference between what you get between HDMI and other forms of high definition." http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/11/tech..._kaz/index.htm May 11, 2006: 7:35 AM EDT |

The funny thing is @ last E3 Sony was talking shit about the 360 stating it is not next generation without HDMI and 7.1 sound.

For gaming I agree the difference between HDMI and, say, Component is negligible if not non-existant. But my understanding has been that on Blu-Ray players and HD-DVD players a like, to get the HD output, an HDMI connection MUST be used, and as paranoid as Hollywood is right now about piracy, I don't forsee them letting Sony display Blu-Ray movies at 1080p over Component cables. So then that Blu-Ray drive is more or less worthless except as an overpriced DVD drive as far as movies are concerned.
What I find funny is last year Sony was talking TWO HDMI outputs and people were speculating that that could lead to 32:9 ratio gaming across two HDTVs. What a difference a year makes. I still wish 360 had an HDMI cable though, as one cable for 5.1 audio and HD is very awesome. I guess they could add one later (weren't they considering that a while ago?). |

Makes you wonder where PSM got all the info printed in their last issue. Where's the $399 PS3 they were so confident about? No memory stick slot and a 20 Gig hard drive? I'm wondering if that will be sufficient to save several Next-Gen Games.
Not another Core versus Premium. Next we'll be told the WII is shipping in two versions. One will feature the motion sensor controllers we've been led to believe were standard. The other will use "GamePaques" which will look alot like NES cartridges and the controllers will look like Xbox's original Duke with the button layout of an Atari 2600. |

That's not HDMI. That's 2 USB ports and 1 USB mini-A style port, if I'm looking at the same picture you are. So, still no digital video out for Xbox360.
I have to say they could've designed that HD-DVD drive better too. I would expect that it would actually match the system a little better...like snap onto it or something. If I had one, I wouldn't know where to put it. Oh well, another reason for me to not want a 360. (Yep, I'm a Sony fan) |

After just reading that we will be able to upgrade with any size harddrive into the ps3 i think ill get the 499 version and then upgrade to a 300gig for 100bucks or cheaper later on probably much later on if needed.
you can save to memory cards through a usb cable and a memcard reader that most people who have pc's already have. But honestly ive' never carried around my memory cards anywhere. so this isnt a big deal to me that it has to be stored on the 20gig HDD. Also im wondering if we will be able to just have game saves straight to our computer HDD through a simple usb cord setup. Well i guess we still have 6 months to find out all the answers.
