I have a new model PS2, Xbox and Im getting a GC and I am running out of space in my entertainment center. I can save space if I stand up my PS2. Would it damage my PS2 and give me disk read errors if I do this?

So you stack your systems up on top of each other? I am too nervous to do that, I may put the GC on the Xbox cause Xbox is heavy and sturdy, but I don't wanna do that.

i heard that if you've had your PS2 sitting horizontally and then you put it veritcally, it either doesnt always read the discs right, or i think i may have heard it scratches the cds.

It may not necessarily give disc read errors, but using the PS2 in it's vertical position has been known to be a bad idea. Doing so in my case scratched my Devil May Cry DVD a few years ago and screwed the end of the game up and that was the last time I used it vertically. I wouldn't recommend stacking anything on your Xbox since that's the only of the three next gen consoles that has ventilation slits on the top of the console, so you'd risk blocking those up, plus the Xbox's top is a little bulgy so it might not lay flat. Honestly, if you really had to stack I think the Gamecube, being so light, would stack on the PS2 laying flat pretty well.

While its running? That's obvious. I've heard that vert scratches CDs too, whats the deal?

No, I have had mine both vertically and horizontally. I had it vertical for about 2 years and switched it to horizontal a couple months ago. Never had a problem with it, and I have the harddrive installed and it still ran fine vertically. To be safe and prevent tipping thouhg, you should invest in a vertical stand, but it's not necessary. The PS2 was designed to operate safely in either position, so you should have nothing to fear.

Mine is vertical, supported by the vertical stand for over a year and it has never scratched up any of my games. Also, I never had a problem with it not being able to read discs or anything to that sort. Maybe the scratching/DRE
problems persists only to certain PS2 models when placed vertically?

been running mine vertically for over 2 years now and nary a problem has arisen. the stand does help add some stability though.

no, not while running. I mean if you've had your ps2 sitting horizontal for a long time, and then you go out and get a vertical stand, it could cause disc read errors, or scratch the cds..

wereas if you bought your ps2 and always used it vertically, it more than likely wouldnt cause the DRE or scratch the cds

come on.
The ps2 was made to play in either position.
so. NO it wont dmg anything playing in a position that the system was designed to play in.

well I had mine like that for a year and no trouble what-so-ever. I believe it's only the earlier models that have problems ruinning vert.

Mine has been vertical as long as I can remember with no stand. Absolutely no problems with it. And even without the stand it is fairly stable.

I had mine horizontal for a long time - until the DREs hit. I put it vertical as it, apparently, eases stress on the laser and I had a lot more success playing games. I had it "repaired" by Sony a few weeks ago. It's probably going back to horizontal - and my Ocean Blue will sit on top again, rather than beside.

I remember earlier when the PS2 first came out, there were some problems with CD games (PS1 games, Madden). Now most games are DVD's, so I don't think it'll be so bad. I heard Sony discontinued their vertical stand though.

The PS2 didnt really even NEED the stand to begin with, the footprint in vertical position is so wide it's pointless. That dosent stop a dozen 3rd parties from making thier own stands though.

The only thing is that you shouldnt keep changing the position, pick one and stick with it, you'll put more stress on the internals if you constantly repositioning it and DEFINATLY dont move it while it's on.

The CD problem was the Disk Read Error problem, basically fixed now and sony fixes any old system they develops the problem. putting games on DVD solves 2 issues, one for people who still get DREs and have had their system fixed it allows you to still play games and DVD games load faster (with the extra benefit of being able to put more things on the disk to load.)

I've had my PS2 standing vertically for 3 years now, and its never scratched a disc. Its resting atop my XBOX with nary a problem in sight. Wierd thing is my PS2 gets the DRE when its horizontal.

I've had my ps2 vertical since I bought it, and to my experience it HAS scratched my frequently played games like socom. The ps2 scratches are there but not that large.

The only time I would see a problem, was if you had the hard drive in there, and hads the unit set up horizontaly. Then, say after a year, but it vertically. The HD will be use to laying flat, and moving it to its side could cause some trouble.
