It still has a fairly large market, the problem is I think that most older cards unless really rare dont have much value to the average player, cards go by a certain number of sets and then a new one is introduced. You cant use old ones with new sets.

I could easily be wrong since I havnt played in years, but I believe this is the way it works, I know that when I started to get back into the game a few years ago and tried playing with my older cards a few players yelled at me for using them saying it was unfair and that you were not allowed to use cards from older sets.

Anyways, despite this depending on the number of cards you have and how much you are asking I might be willing to buy them. Go to gamefaq's card board or a magic site or something and find out what they are worth, even if they are just junk or impossible to sell if the price is right Ill buy them. I want to play magic again but I dont want to dedicate the money it takes to play with people in card shops(nor do I wish to play with them). I have been hoping for awhile to buy a bunch of cards and teach my brother and fiancee how to play, this means I dont need "legal" valuable or even cards in good condition.

I checked on ebay and a few other sides, most of the old stuff (excluding super rares from Legends, Alpha Beta and a few other hard to find cards) are nearly worthless since you can't use them in tournaments.

In one sense it's helped to keep Magic around since people constantly need to buy new cards but in another it's made if difficult if you want to start playing again without investing a fair amount of money.

whoa whoa whoa

old cards aren't worthless.. and there is a demand.. if they are extended(invasion through current) or Legacy legal (alpha to current with a banned list) there are Pro tours and a vast community for those cards..

PM me a list of the cards and if i need them i'll probably buy them.. not interested in commons though.. and commons from any set are pretty much worthless anyways..

but i wouldn't say they are worthless.. there is a big extended and legacy/vintage scene (at all levels not just highly competitive)..

also if you have some off beat rares.. collectors like to fill sets.. they dont' give top dollar.. but if you just want to unload then thats a good place..

cards from Tempest-Appoc are the most saught after (this is where i judge what you have, unless you have old old old cards, which i highly highly doubt) anyways.. PM me if you have any other questions..

for those getting into Magic, i suggest getting on Magic online, except for Invasion-oddessy the price of cards isn't all that high and you can get pretty competitive decks on the cheap.

I would love to sell all my cards. I used to play all the time but I have now stopped. The problem with selling is that I have too many cards to list them all, over 2k I would guess. And I no longer know what is rare and what is not. And no, I do not have any extremly rare cards, I do not think I even have any Alphas or Betas.

I have been thinking to maybe taking all the cards to those stores that eBay things for you. I dunno if they will take em though.

Im looking up prices - but is there a easy way to know what edition cards you have? By the copyright date maybe? Most of mine are 1994-1995

Check ebay seriously for a lot of the prices, yea 98% of the stuff is worth a few dollars at most, but most collections contain a few 20.00+ cards and if lucky maybe 1000.00!

That's crazy. Now granted, when I played it was first starting up - I started playing around the time The Dark was introduced, and got out shortly after Ice Ages hit - so yea, I'm old-school. But I always thought the whole point of the game is that you can always play with your old cards, and you are just adding on.

Meh, the reason I got out of playing anyway was because it stopped being fun. People started taking it too seriously. The fun in the game, to me, was to come up with a very unique idea for a deck & work on it - sometimes you'd come up with a powerful deck, sometimes not, but as long as it was FUN it didn't matter.

I got to relive the fun of M:TG with Culdcept on the PS2.

Thus why I dont go the card shop and play with the kids there. I thought the fun of magic was playing with friends and building the most kick ass deck possible. Besides the fact that half of them smelled and had no social skills most of the kids at the card shop took the game waaaaaaaaay too serious, people would freak out over small side deck mishaps, if you took your finger off a card while thinking or as I said used any older cards.

If they are from an expansion or are newer than 6th edition, they will have a logo on the right side, just below the card art. Also, generally speaking, a white card border means that it is either a base series or a reprint; original copies of expansion sets have black borders. I don't know if this has changed with new cards, though.

In terms of 3rd/4th/5th edition, check the copyright date. 3rd ed has no copyright date, just the artist's name. 4th ed is 1995, 5th is 1997. Anything other than that is either a reprint or Alpha/Beta/Unlimited. I don't remember how you tell the difference between Alpha/Beta/Unlimited, but IIRC it has to do with whether the corners of the card are round or pointy.

I know some people who have the cards but just like you they want to get rid of them. I would do what the other posters said and try to sell them off, earn some profit.
