THIS THREAD OP IS NO LONGER ACTIVELY UPDATED WITH NEW PROMOS.

All Promotions are available in-store only, and they DO NOT stack!

Only the 10% Bonus from Gamers Club Unlocked will stack with these offers, and it definitely does stack despite what some employees will say.

Please read FAQ below before asking questions!

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the **% bonus TIV work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150.

How does the 10% Gamers Club Unlocked bonus work?
The 10% bonus for Gamers Club Unlocked members is calculated from the base trade in value. So in the above example, a $100 trade would get an extra $10 with the GCU membership bonus. So if there was a 50% trade in bonus it would be $100 base, $10 Gamers Club Unlocked bonus and $50 TIV bonus for a grand total of $160.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine (which typically has a couple of great coupons every month). It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

I didn't get my 10% bonus or the employee said it doesn't stack, what gives?
As of September 2012 the trade in system at Best Buy was updated, and employees seem to be having a hard time making sure that they add the GCU bonus. It should be added immediately after they scan your games, and before they take your personal information. You also should always try to know your full trade in value with bonuses before going to the store so that if the price is different you can identify it immediately. The 10% bonus definitely does stack with any TIV promo (100%, 50%, it doesn't matter). All the Gamers Club Unlocked pamphlets say so, as does the website, and are a great place to point to if an employee or a manager tells you otherwise.

Do we get Reward Zone points for trade-ins??
Yes. You get one point for every pre-bonus dollar traded in. So if your TIV was $100 before bonuses, you get 100 Reward Zone points. Gamers Club Unlocked members (and possibly standard Gamers Club members) get double points for everything gaming, including trade-ins. So in the same example you would wind up with 200 Reward Zone points. To get Reward Zone points you must have them include your Reward Zone membership information (easiest to look up by phone number) with your trade-in (this is required for the Gamers Club Unlocked bonus anyway).

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. Some states, or even localities (county, city, etc.) may not allow the sale of Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app often sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it if you don't have to.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case (as in, it is possible that has never been the case). When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game 99% of the time. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market and honestly, Best Buy probably doesn't trust their employees to make sure all the extra content is included. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen at an atypical time, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though, and busier stores are more likely to have employees that have done more trade ins and know the rules.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a government issued ID (passport, drivers license, military ID, etc.).

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule. It is their right to do so.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

Just got my six games I sent to BBY approved. Glad I decided to take that risk.
I just decided not to send them off, a physical gift card in hand instantly was good enough, besides I have more credit now than I know what to do with... I actually have more GTA V's than I know what to do with as well XD I bought myself the SE while amazon still had it, and had ordered three from the BB glitch (Two were from before it was "free" and was b1g1)... So far on principal I haven't traded in one YET... I mean... $42 for it? It would feel wrong...

You have fun with your soon to be worthless games then if it makes you feel better. I didn't get the Happy Feet and Self Defense until Tuesday so didn't have much choice but to ship them.

I got them on last tuesday, I just had decided to trade them in store (and already did) but compared to the massive amount I have those two wouldn't of made that much anyway (I am at around.. 900?)

Meh, Why not sell them/give them to your friends?
My friends already have copies XD my friendslist on xbox is like a meeting of GTA V fans it seems. I have them in my trade list here but interest is probably pretty low considering all the deals we know about for the game.
My god though... I just did the math,,, The total for what I traded in since last sunday when the values went nuts... I MIGHT have the record out of the lot of us... (if not there is someone ELSE with a SERIOUS self control problem lol)... $1109.75... I also have another $75.60 going in tomorrow. I originally wrote out a huge excuse/explanation but deleted it, I wen't nuts, and It is now safe to assume I will be preordering ALL my games at either BB or AMZ (through the use of the kindle cards XD...   Now I know how hoarder feels with Ipads. Is it wrong I hope they DON'T continue the madness this coming sunday? I seriously think one of the geeksquad clerks is starting to hate me...

understandable, I mean other than trading it in you can't really do anything with them. Sell it on ebay and you get the same amount. I was gonna say donate them to a children's hospital or something and then remembered we're talking about GTA.

Nah, unless somethings changed I've personally been the one who traded the most, I've hit ~$1400 a few times. I usually stayed around ~$600 - $900 when I traded games in.

Yeah, I know you're talking about me... let's just say you're right.

I meant to go to bed 3-4 hours ago but spent that time instead making a list of what I'm going to do tomorrow. Still respectable but sadly nothing like the first days of these screw ups. You don't even want to know the balls I have in the air right now.

damn guys, please consider editing / deleting the bragging posts

those posts bring the morons/idiots out

sheesh and folks lament about the 1 per title...

Yeah, you either have to get them to ring up a thing that looks like a miniature version of the magazine that all the BBYs around here have (usually around the preorder cards) or go to the big touch screen in the gaming section and print out a GCU barcode and get them to ring that out.

Either way you give them your Reward Zone info and they apply it to that. Don't know if it has changed since the RZ "upgrades", but that's how I did it.
I still cant decide if its worth the $15...plus the horror stories on here about not getting the 10% at times

It's worth it, especially if you are doing a lot of trade in's. The 10% that people aren't getting is because they are allowing BBY not to give them that 10%. You just have to make the BBY rep aware and confirm the 10% is added. I always have them tell me the total trade in amount before and after the 10% just to make sure.

As one who rarely gets the 10% bonus, I can tell you that most of what you said is BS. I stand there and tell them about the bonus I am supposed to get but they can't find the prompt in the system even when I tell them where exactly to look for it. YMMV.

I agree it's ymmv and is based on if your BBY rep is incompetent or not. I have traded in at a few BBY and none of them had the problem of giving me the 10%.

So do you just take the trade in value without the 10%? I'm not really sure why you would go without getting the bonus; seeing as you had to pay to get that perk.

Because most of the time, the 10% bonus amounts to a dollar or so. Of course, when that happens multiple times, it adds up. It's gotten to the point now where I make sure I get a receipt if I don't get the bonus. Then I go to the BBY forums and let them know there. I've been able to refer to my transaction number and have been given $10 in RZ points to offset the in-store mistake.

Any more good flips before the values tank.. Btw I used to be a member but I can no longer access my old account so Im stuck at newbie level.

All I can say is do your homework--check the BBY TIVs (bestbuy.com/tradein) and cross-reference them with Gamestop's used prices; you can use the various system filters on the BBY site to make things easier.

And look closely, because there's still a lot of good ones. ;)

On another note, I received an email confirming a bunch of my mailed-in BBY trades (about $100 worth, including single copies of Happy Feet 2 and Self Defense...unlike everyone else in this thread who sent in 3 each ). My big transaction should be processed later this week along with another $30 worth of stuff.

I think one of the processed games (Blazblue: Calamity Trigger) was disc-only and there weren't any issues, so you could take that as confirmation of just discs being accepted, but I'm not 100% sure I sent it in that way (that's what happens when you trade in so much @_@).

Thanks  I have been trying my best just wondered if any rare ones out there I have missed. Hope the TIV stay till sunday with target b2g1 free to best buy.

Has anyone successfully renewed their Gamer's Club Unlocked since the changeover to MyBestBuy earlier this week? The SKU that prints from the kiosk wasn't working at the register. I spent about 45 minutes in store with an employee on the phone with store support until they eventually gave up.
nope. i have tried using the sku and UPC from the touch screen print out and the gamers unlocked brochure. someone said they did it since the changeover but i dunno how.

Just realized that my B2G1 coupons from purchasing GTA V at GS go live today...probably need to do some scouring and see how I maximize that coupon to send some more credit to BB.  Anybody with those codes: they're good for the next 10 days...let's get hunting!  I obviously could use it to get one of the cheap 50% off games for free, but I would like to get a little more value out of it if possible.

Buy 3 Madden's, lol

Even without that it more than paid for itself with the B2G1 coupon.

I never even got the welcome packet and a whole year has passed since I had GCU...Plus, every time I want to get the 10% bonus or 10% off used games I have to argue with the employees (who always try to tell me that it "doesn't exist") and they have to bring over a manager to do it because they don't know how to do it, which takes up more time than in should. Compare it to Gamestop where I never have problems with coupons, discounts, PUR, etc. and I'm in and out of the store very quickly.

I still made up the $15 with the bonus, coupons, used game discount, etc. But Best Buy should really get their employees up to date on these programs, especially since they removed their gaming registers.

I "renewed" yesterday using the slip from the preorder thingy. My GCU expired on Tuesday so I guess technically it isn't a renewal as my new expiration date is now 9/17/14 according to mybestbuy.

Also I got the "thanks for renewing" email and the link to the coupons says "no coupons available". Anyone else have the same problem? I'll probably wait a few days then go to the forums.

See, something's really wrong if you're not getting the 10% discount on used automatically because it happens when your RZ info is pulled up on the register or website. The trade bonus doesn't because they have to sort of add it on and know what they're doing but the discount is automatic. Maybe it got tied to the wrong RZ? I just wish BBY would get it together and clean that up instead of just making the program worse because there's probably more incorrect accounts than actual ones.

So how is everyone trading in Kingdom hearts 1.5?

I was thinking of buying the limit edition and keeping only the extras.

KH is listed as no sign when I look it up at BB tradein page, how are people tradein it in?

I used one of the old mini pamphlet things for @Gamer that are usually with all the pre-order cards. No problem. Had Castlevania on the cover.

I took it to customer service, they scanned the UPC and gave me $40.

42. don't lie to us we know you are GCU now :p

Besides making a profit you get the Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything
Well yeah, but that's the third time I've answered that question so I was assuming I was getting too complicated or something.

They let you keep the extras?

I didn't have the LE. If you have the LE, whether you want to keep the stuff or not, then just take the disc and write down the UPC from the standard one and take it with you because they are different UPCs I believe.

Ok... so you are not JUST lost out on 10% trade in credit... You have been losing out on reward zone points as well (I have a little over 1500 just since sunday last week!, gamers club members get 2 points on the dollar of base value) not to MENTION each $ of the base trade in value, counts as a $ towards (used to be silver)Elite/Elite Plus.
Would you let gamestop get away with not giving you the 10% bump on trade ins? I THINK NOT! Don't let them get away with it, and bring it up IN STORE, what they need to do during the trade in, is look up your reward zone by the phone number when they are doing the trade in. IF YOU NEVER HAVE TO GIVE THEM YOUR PHONE # THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG! Also it doesn't work 100% on the first time, so unless it is showing the bonus, than have them look it up again, and again, until it does. I had to pretty much teach the employees the first few times, but now they seem to be competent in it and the $15 has paid for itself EASILY.

I got a GCU on monday before trading in some games to get the extra points and percentage.  One guy told me he thought it had to be with a purchase of something else, and the woman that got the sku had to go away and get someone else who took like 15 minutes.

I uncovered something the other day on the RZ/ GCU topic. I had been having issues getting them to add my 10%, sometimes I got it and sometimes I didn't. I would always ask for it and would get it when dealing with a competent Geek Squad rep, but we all know that those can be few and far between.

Last week I went in to trade some games, and I gave the rep my phone number. He told me that it looked like I had 2 different accounts listed under that number. He said that one was a "phone purchase account".

He told me that someone must have set that up when I called and had them hold an item to purchase at some point in the past. He said that it was under my name, but it was not attached to my RZ for some reason. He actually called into 1-800- Best Buy for me and had the accounts merged, and since then I have not had any issues getting my RZ or GCU bonus applied.

Not sure if this issue affects anyone else, but it might be worth checking into. I actually realized that they used the non-RZ account when I recently bought my iPad, so I have to go back in and get that fixed (I'll probably only get a 45 day return instead of a 60 because of it).

The key to always getting the 10% for me is to tell them to add my rz info before hitting total. Doing this, I've never not received it.

Whoa - just looked at my RZ account and I actually got points for my trade-in.  How bizarre.  They didn't do that last time I traded (which was Jan. 2012).

I also noticed that in that transaction and my last couple of purchases I did not get the 25% Silver bonus.  I am supposedly this new "Elite Plus" right now (through Feb 2014).  Isn't that supposed to give the 25% bonus as well?  Seems like they gave with one hand while taking away with the other.  Figures...

I was having trouble renewing my GCU. What's strange is that using my phone number brings up 2 accounts: mine and another person's. This other person's account has my email and phone number, but the name and address are different. I think the CSR fixed it by merging or linking the two accounts together.

What a PITA it was to renew it, but I'm thankful it's done with now.

You are, I got the Elite Plus 25% Bonus and the GCUL Bonus when I purchased GTA V along with the $20 RWZ Cert

Figures...
I along with other people complained when GCU started like 2 years ago that we were not getting points for trade ins or buying items with the GC we got for trading in. So basically trade in $100 worth of games and get 0 points was very messed up, because you were almost penalized for trading in and then buying stuff with the GC. Now you earn 2 points for every base $1 plus you get credit toward Elite/Elite+ for every base $1 you trade in.

The 25% will not show pending like the GCU 2x bonus will. It will show up once the transaction clears.

Ah, right - this happened before as well. I just hadn't looked at my account in ages. Apparently I have a $5 cert I need to use - not sure how that happened as I "bank" points and don't redeem until I need them. It would have been nice to know/use that when I bought Transformers Prime last week.

I don't see my trades counting towards elite status... should they?
In short, yes! For a longer answer look at Hemi's response.

Ok... so you are not JUST lost out on 10% trade in credit...

My trade in of 3x Self Defense was accepted, but they're mailing me the GC. I thought it was supposed to be in the form of an e-Gift Card?

They give out an automatic email response most likely, and they never bothered to change the response, but you should receive an E-Gift card, and not a physical one in the mail, regardless of what they say.
