Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

I wish I could get a complete lego pack with Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings along with the Harry Potter and Star Wars lego games. Please, Tony.
+1 :)

Oh, don't get me wrong here - I like A and AA games.

Great - now this sounds like we talking about batteries!

But HB, Groupees, and those charity places seem to do those best for their "Build a Bundles," "PWYW", "BTA", and things of that nature of late - not Amazon.

I've always thought Amazon has been at their best - especially since they're a AAA retailer - when having deals w/ the AAA game dev's/pub's. Even more so true, since the rise of HB, Groupees, etc.
Yeah, but I don't think it's very likely we'll be seeing games like Scribblenauts, Lego [x franchise], and other stuff that falls between AAA and indie (I guess some would just call them kids games >.>), showing up in bundles on those sites. I guess Humble can do about anything these days, but generally speaking I still think they have a place at amazon, just with better discounts (like the $5 Scribblenauts + Ticket to Ride, The Maw, and Drip Drip during the SSS). It just depends how far Tony is willing/able to discount the stuff, as I still think Amazon more consistently discounts that sort of game than anywhere else (maybe GMG with a promo).

I've completely lost my train of thought though, so in summary I just want a Playfirst Bundle...

@The CAG's Who Post in This Amazon DVG Thread

I'm just not thrilled with these deals at all.

Am I alone here?
nope this deal is kind of avg sale where the amazon madness sale im waiting for long time im so bored im actually playing video games when iu usaly bye idle I spank AJ Lee or Kaitlyn or get spank by them im not sure anymore..

Nope. Not interested in any of those titles. Not every day or week has to be a fantastic deal, though.
On this subject as well, I'm not sure if it's a case of increased expectations in this thread or broader reach on our part but the past several deals that have gotten "meh" reception here at CAG have turned out to be some of our most successful ever. Example, the first time we ran that Square Enix Gamer's bundle back in June the feedback here was like "meh, price is too high", that is currently our 4th best deal of the week this year.

There's not an action item here, just some feedback from my end.

Edit: To follow up, on those "meh" deals I'm talking about CAG has continued to overindex against other sites in terms of how many sales come through when we run them.

Cheers,

Tony

The Tomb Raider/Sleeping Dogs/Hitman Pro bundle was more than enough to keep me glued to Amazon DVG for the next year. :)

I think you have to gauge where the "meh's" are coming from. My observation is it's mostly from regulars/hardcore CAG's. Which means said deals are either A) already owned, B) are not far enough across the 75% off or GTFO level or C) close enough to a repeat sale (not necessarily from Amazon) to make it CAG-meh (which doesn't make it bad, just that the vocal audience is extremely frugal and has a good memory for said deals).

it more due to game i dont want not bad if it was for games people want it just not my type i trying to clean up wishlist not add to it it fair but to me it not my type of game i just need to get rid of wishlist and need the biggg 75% off sale off but that only reason it good deal but since it not my typpe it meh. I really do want is dlc bundle for space marine now that would be great. aoe3 bundle was good deal for friend. the mayhem was good but most is either dont want or just not at right point.

for me, the price of any game not in my wishlist is immaterial since i obviously will not be buying it. i have about 8 or so games and some dlcs that i am looking to get. about half of those games are relatively new so i am not expecting to get them this year. the rest i have periodically noted them in this thread. i realize we are not going to get an amazing deal every week excluding holidays sales so i am waiting patiently until a game on my list is available at my price point whether that happens at amazon or elsewhere.

Good God Tony, surely you don't actually put any stock into the opinions of the locals here concerning value? What you get from the vocal locals is the cheapest of all assed opinions. It comes as ZERO surprise that you'd sell the hell out of any bundle labeled as "meh" here. It's like asking your grandpa how much a haircut should cost. Entertaining sure, but not representative of reality.

He specifically asked what our thoughts were. I'm sure he's smart enough to consider his audience when asking that question. Sure, random people on the internet who don't know anything about gaming deals might be excited about the list and cost he provided, but a lot of good marketing comes from CAG involvement (and reddit, who always cross-posts these deals.) Checking on our thoughts on a deal is a good way to get an estimate of how much community involvement a deal will get. With that in mind, your response is rather poor.

Edit: BTW, in regards to the previous deals he mentioned, like the EA one from last week, it WAS a good deal...more of the comments, I thought, were of the "I already have all those" nature. Which was the case for me, certainly. I'm not at all surprised they sold well.

When it comes to some things, yes. When it comes to selling Scribblenauts for $6 when it has been $5 already, no. That is a "meh" deal, since you're rehashing the same sale at a worse price.

Really? Not even close. So many people here buy things at reasonable prices and praise "okay" Amazon sales. We're a smart community who knows the pricing of the PC gaming market and what is a good deal and what's not.

But hey, go ahead and run that Strategy First bundle full of shitty games for $15 and watch how CAG's opinion on it was so useless. Then we'll see how much stock should be put into our suggestions.

I'm not sure you caught the point of my response...which wasn't "hey i'm ignoring what you're saying" but "hey, giving you guys some perspective on how things have performed vs. the perceived value here in this thread". Regarding the Strat First bundle, my response to those guys (using words copy and pasted from this thread) was, "we're not running this for $15" and then I gave them some other options to choose from, which we're now discussing.

Again, the goal is always to collect feedback. I was just providing you insight into how we're looking at things over here. If you all find this insight offensive I'm happy to not provide it :) but I think a lot of people in the thread are interested in how we think about building and executing promotions.

Cheers,

Tony

Please. CAG as a whole is pretty niche. Most gamers know nothing about CAG. Heck Id bet more than half of the PC gamers that even visit CAG aren't even familiar with Isthereanydeal.com. Tony has at his disposal here the absolute most knowledgable PC game shoppers in the world. Yeah, you'll immediately know the bargain value of any bundle out there. There is value your perspective. But it in no way reflects the general buying behavior of most gamers. One thing Tony can be sure of, if this thread likes a deal, it will sell like mad. The reverse is in no way true. He said himself already.

I was agreeing with you in the first part of my post, but pointing out that some criticism is a bit obvious, such as repeat sales for higher prices. But if that brings in the numbers for Amazon, so be it.

The second part of my post was aimed at donbaloo, not you, since he was basically saying "Feedback on prices here is useless".

Again, this is also true. Basically, when I post a deal here and you guys are like "WOOOT BUYING IMMEDIATELY DON'T RUN OUT OF KEYS!!!"

I immediately order more keys and buckle down to watch systems start breaking from the volume.

I've actually started calling it the Idiotkque Fffect...not a joke.

Woah you really hit the nail on the head!

By the way, not all sales have to be the absolute lowest ever price. Many people who missed previous sales might still consider it low enough to buy.

Many people here would still wait, but it's not the majority of people.

I really don't like this "entitled to the lowest price" attitude. Sure it would be nice, but it just doesn't happen for all games. Some people here really need to accept it, or at least not sound so greedy and entitled in their post.

I for one appreciate the insight on how you and team Paddington build & execute promotions Tony. Keep up the good work. :)

Yeah, my post was also towards donbaloo. The post you made explaining the performance of the previous deals and the "meh" you got here (which was your response to my saying the deal didn't interest me at all) was fine.

I haven't been following the thread closely for a couple weeks but just got two emails for $5 promo credits to NBA 2K14. Neat!

Yea Tony nailed it really. We may not like certain deals for whatever reason (probably because most of us have a ever growing library of games. I'm at +1,700 pc games over all clients!) So some deals may not look that tempting to us because we have 25%-75% of the games in that bundle already.

But if we really like a deal, it will probably sell like gangbusters =P

That's a good point. My ever increasing backlog does make it easy for me to say "no" to a deal.

Especially since I can always look at prices and say, "Well, I'll just pull something out of the backlog."

Unless it's something I'm dying to play like Bioshock Infinite (great game) ASAP - yeah, probably "no."

And if it has been cheaper before or cheaper elsewhere when I check sites like "isthereanydeal", that's another way to get me to say "no."

I must admit, the Metro Pack for $20 is a good deal - but, my problem is a few things w/ it:

1. I own Metro 2033 already - that hurts the value of that pack for me.

2. Metro: LL Season Pass was NOT in there.

3. Metro: LL was 1 penny accidentally at BB - okay we won't try factor that insane mistake/glitch too much. ;)

Okay, so I just checked - I got three of them NBA 2K14 $5 off order coupons, hehe.

Glad we got until Sept 2014 to use it, hehe.

I ain't one to buy games ASAP normally.

Any 2K purchase since I started here :).
I was thinking "I can't have made that many purchases..." as I looked back at the Bureau, NBA 2K13, Civ V: Gods & Kings, and then I realized...Borderlands 2. At least 15, probably more, of those purchases were Borderlands 2 DLC. ...and I'm at 26 now.

Too bad they don't stack. ;)

also got 2 nba credits. what threw me off was "your recent purchase" which dates back to jan/may 2012. thanks for the coupon though not a game on my wish list. i guess i will hang on to it and make a new category called "maybe list".

So today I received a bunch of e-mail about promo credit.  One of those referenced $5 off NBA 2k14.  However, I have no idea what any of the others are for.  My Video Game/Software credit appears to be nearly $45.  How can I tell what that credit can be used for?

Why is Amazon spamming my email account with NBA 2k14 credits? So far I have 10 of these emails (and Im assuming more will come at this rate). Seems like they come at an 30m - hour increments. Either Amazon hates me, REALLY wants me to buy the game, or just some bored techie messing with the exchange servers / blast email lol.

I'm assuming these credits are not stackable right? :p

All I see from that 2k14 is "insert game features here"(PS3 & Xbox 360 only).

I just hope they add some features in Dynasty mode as that is the only one I want to play.

Hi Tony. I don't understand the following from the post above "to overindex against other sites in terms of how many sales come through when we run them" I (and alot of other CAG's) appreciate the insight you provide, and I am wondering if the above means what I think it means, that maybe the sales throughput from CAG being less than from other sites might be an effect of repeat sales, and most of us having jumped on those sales when they first hit combined with jaded higher than usual expectations from the deal hunting elite. Between 75%-80% sales and cheap-cheap bundles becoming the norm, most of us here have been spoiled, but the average gamer isn't spending time logging on to forums everyday looking for a deal on a game $2 less than it was 6 months ago, and would be ecstatic to see the deals you've been bringing.. Am I way off base here? Either way, don't let the vocal minority shift the tide of opinion too much. and Thanks. Give Paddington a pat on the head for me.

Hey there,

To address these questions, no, the credits aren't stackable, but you get a $5 credit towards NBA 2K14 for every 2K game purchased. Sorry for any inconvenience here :(.

Cheers,

Tony

I believe he means that CAG actually generates MORE sales (compared to other sites with traceable referral links) when these so called "meh" deals run. So basically he's saying that while us hardcore posters may not be into the deal, there is still a large amount of traffic/sales coming from CAGs for those deals. I'm not surprised since those of us who post are just a fraction of the people who actually frequent the site.
