Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Worms 3 (universal) dropped to 99 cents. None of the games in the Worms series have ever gone free on ios so this might be the best it gets for this game. Any thoughts on the game? Is it more of the same?

I loved the Fiona Apple cover of the Willy Wonka song in the Chipotle Scarecrow trailer. I also love that Chipotle has a shredded tofu option, so a non-meat-eater like me can get some protein. So yeah, I'll probably play the game. Here's the Appshopper link.

Hidden Wonders of the Depths, Nimblequest and Ascension: Chronciles of the Godslayer are all free today.

Being that this is the apple thread, ios 7 and iTunes 11.1 come out today. In relation to games, it may make the rare game unstable until it's officially updated to support ios 7 all this is standard issue for software updates of course.

When are they gonna talk about the game controllers? I thought that was one of the biggest new things about iOS 7 but last week they didn't make any mention of it at their big press conference.

I have heard mention of a few games adding support, but until some actual controller options are out in the wild any discussion of it is still jumping the gun a little.

That was actually the smallest thing they mentioned, to them.

It just flew by on a slide and not much has been said.

Huge deal for us obviously but it's very weird how tight lipped they have been about it.

Still exciting to see games add support without any retail controllers on the market.

Man, I'm aching for a new game to play.  But not an infinite runner, not tower defense, not a farmville clone and nothing with on screen controls.  I feel like I eliminate so much...

Like strategy RPG's? Battle for Wesnoth is always my fallback when I get bored with the games you just mentioned. Always seems to satisfy my appetite. And it has a TON of content. Well worth the $3.99 (and possibly the only iOS game I've ever paid full price for)

You eliminate crappy games which of course wipes out most of the Iphone's offerings.

I still support Nimble Strong: Bartender in Training (Ugly art but fun drink mixing sort of game.), Surviving High School (Weekly serial American VN-ish game so mostly a CYOA school sitcom.), Cause of Death (See above but a police drama with enough cheese, charm, and grandiosity to make it work. Our heroes have been pulled from detective work to the INTERNATIONAL CRIME TASK FORCE to chase the one master serial killer.), Helsing's Fire (Light-shining puzzler.), every Cave shump, Agricola (Brutally brain-taxing board game.), and Ascension (Lighter deck-building vs. card game.)

I've been spending a lot of time on Junk Jack X... but it's a hard game to recommend cause it's sort of like, almost not a game. There aren't any real goals, you just mine for stuff and build things if you want. It doesn't sound entertaining, but somehow it is.

If you factor out the ridiculous IAPs, the game is actually really fun. I played it all the way through and even the DLC. It's a shame the DLC is so outrageous people don't give the game a chance.
Am I missing something? I'm like level 50, but it doesn't seem there is much of a game here. Just swiping my finger all of the screen trying to touch guys that aren't dark, taking frequent breaks whenever many of my guys are dead. And eventually I kill every enemy I come across. It feels like it doesn't require anything of me other than patience (or money, I guess).

I've thought about maybe replaying some battles to level up or something, but doesn't seem worthwhile. Am I doing it wrong? I feel like if I just want to swipe all over the screen I should just play fruit ninja or something, where there at least bombs and stuff I shouldn't swipe.

Yep, pretty sure that's the extent of the gameplay ... which is why a few days after I was initially enamored by the art and soundtrack, it's now off my phone ;-p

I've been playing a lot of it too, and man, I can't recommend it highly enough!! It's great. While you do have to make your own goals, there's so much to do and discover that's it's incredibly addicting. I like it more than Terraria or Minecraft.

That's pretty much the gist of it. I enjoyed it. But then it helps when you hack it and have unlimited respawns. Like I said, eliminate IAPs and it's fun. Swiping is the format of a ton of iOS games so if you don't like swiping you may be on the wrong platform. I'm not a big FF fan either. I've only played I, II, X, and XI. I just enjoyed watching the continuous mayhem on the screen.

Well, I spoke too soon...sort of. It WAS working for me, so I can confirm that it's not an iOS 7/compatibility issue. Their servers must just be down. Unless there was an appshopper app update that I missed which broke functionality.

Appshopper's working fine for me. Might just be intermittent server trouble.

Hah ok. I'm still playing it on the metro once in a while. I don't mind swiping, but this game is no infinity blade / fruit ninja / whatever :)

Just checked it out, the free version seems to work fine and the full version is messed up.
How is it messed up vs the free/iap version? I've been playing it a little here and there and it seems ok so far.

Idk. I just installed the free version, they both look exactly the same to me, screen and control-wise on my iPhone 5. Also didn't see anything about unlocking the free version via IAP, not sure if it hits you with that later or not but anyway it's not a bad lil platformer. I haven't gotten too far into it but I like it so far.

I don't know of any sites that track in app purchase price drops but I lowered my game The Secret Castle down to 99 cents for the next week as we try to get the game out for a variety of Android devices.

Here's the link and you have questions for me I can certainly try and answer them.
