BEST BUY UPGRADE AND SAVE PROGRAM (Begins January 13, 2013 through the end of business February 2, 2013)

1) Trade in ANY DVD for a $5 credit toward purchase of any in-stock blu-ray $9.99 and up.

* Limit 5 per visit. Per visit is most often interpreted as 5 per day per customer, but many people have just walked out and come back in immediately or later the same say with 5 more discs. Plenty of people have done far more than 5 at a single visit as long as the store allows the exception.

* No stacking of coupons. A Single $5 discount coupon is allowed per blu-ray or blu-ray boxset. A boxset of 3 movies will not allow 3 coupons, for example.

2) Trade-in DVDs do not have to be same title as blu-ray to be purchased.

3) DVDs must be a commercially produced discs (no burned copies).

4) No adult DVDs that are specifically XXX content; whether they are rated XXX or not.

5) Discs are supposed to have the original case and artwork. Discs are meant to be at least presentable - should look playable. Many stores require the UPC to be intact. Some stores check things pretty closely (right disc, right case, right UPC, disc condition) and others just toss the case into the recycle bin without any screening (some people swear they traded in an empty case). [In reality discs in anything that look like regular case are often accepted by some stores including those is Blockbuster/3rd party cases with rental stickers and and nowhere near original artwork and UPC]

* Are HDDVD or HD-DVD combo packs eligible? This has been a YMMV issue and some places people have been given credit for both type discs, others only if it was a combo, and some stores refused to consider it at all for the trade-in. If you run into this issue either try a different store or call 1-800 BESTBUY and see if they can clarify the issue for you or your Store Manager.

6) Blu-ray - all current and new release Bluray priced $9.99 or above should be included. Music Blurays were included in the April 2012, but weren't in previous U&S sales.

7) Each store in the past had their own logistics of how to work the program. Most stores would make you stop at the entry and have your used discs stamped/marked/taped.

* Many stores had you bring the used DVD to the Service desk, check them out to make sure they met criteria and gave the customer a preprinted coupon(s) with a receipt attached to the coupon/barcode. Some stores gave the customer a Copied sheet of paper with the UPC bar code and attached receipt to 'activate' the sheet of paper. The coupon could them be exchanged at the regular register for the blu-ray you were purchasing and the barcode automatically deducted the $5 at sale. This allowed you to take your coupons out of the store and purchase later. The expiration date on the official coupon is usually the last day of the sale. If you are given a coupon with a receipt attached, do not detach them or your coupon may well be disallowed.

* Some stores required you to bring/leave your DVD at the Customer Service desk, then bring your blu-rays to the Service desk to complete the purchase. No coupons were given out so you had to exchange and purchase the discs the same day.

* Some stores would allow you to trade your DVD for a coupon at the Service Desk, but each coupon was marked/dated and you were told it was only valid for the date on the coupon and in that specific store. [Only had this happen once and I have no idea what would have happened if I took the coupon to a different store or brought it back to the same store later.]

8) Discounts are most often taken from the actual Selling Price of the blu-ray on the day of purchase despite the fine print on the coupon saying "Discount taken from Regular Price." This has and will likely continue to be a contentious point until corporate absolutely clarifies the issue or changes the language. BBY ads often show discs with Sale Prices and then subtract the $5 U&S coupon so logically that should apply to all other discs.

9) Price matching and using $5 coupon is a big YMMV since this can be most certainly considered combining offers or double dipping much in the same way that PM and getting a gift card for purchase is often considered doubling up. This is one argument I actually find hard to argue with though it's worth trying. Since the U&S is considered a Store coupon it should be applied to the price before trying to PM unlike a Manufacturers coupon (this difference is spelled out very specifically in Target and other stores coupon use policy).

10) There should be absolutely no arguments about using Reward Zone certificates during purchase.

11) Additional Manufacturers Coupons SHOULD BE allowed and should be considered the same as cash or a gift card on top of the $5 Promo. This doesn't mean it won't be argued and it certainly doesn't mean it will be accepted, but according the Best Buy own Corporate Reps, the use of MQ should never be questioned whether it's a sales price or price-match or promo.

Multiple times the Best Buy Corporate Employees have had to repeat the phrase

"The store should honor the coupon, even with the price match. Any valid manufacturer’s coupon displaying the manufacturer’s address, a barcode, and labeled as a Manufacturer’s coupon at the top should be accepted on the product listed, regardless of the price."

12) Buying a disc this week and in hopes of applying the coupon next week will work, but it should work as a return/rebuy so if the price is higher next week it may not always save you money. As usual there is some YMMV whether some stores will allow you to repurchase the same disc unless the store has current stock. The same can be said of ordering discs online for pick up at the store -- some stores have allowed a return/rebuy to add the coupon and some stores have refused to do this.

13) U&S coupons obtained for this promotion period can only be used during this promotion period.

Got all three Disney movies today plus got a PM to $20 on Oblivion before coupon. So if there was any doubt, they can PM with the coupon but it needs an override. Just glad I got someone willing to do it no questions asked, the way it should be at CUSTOMER service. ;)
My rep did the price match but when she scanned the $5 coupon, it reverted back to 22.99. I gave up at that point and just settled for 17.99 price after trade.

Mine scanned the coupon first, then did the override which worked without a hitch. I didn't even have to ask so you just have to get lucky with a good rep.

I have a ton of DVDs that came with blus I've bought that will NEVER be used. Anyone got a good system to utilize those for U&S coupons? I no longer have a color printer to print off artwork and I'm assuming just throwing them in spare blu cases won't work...

Warner Bros has a DVD2Blu program that doesn't require artwork. Has some decent titles for $5 each after trade in. Could also post on CAG or Goozex.

Also, thanks for the info Kovorkian. Could have sworn the sale ended last weekend. Almost threw out extra coupons because I couldn't find everything I wanted at first.

Yeah, I second the DVD2Blu.com offer. You can even use every disc from a three-disc movie and trade them for three titles.

If you can find enough titles that you want to push you into free shipping and can't find cheaper elsewhere, it's a really good value.

I was referring more to this U&S offer. Thank for the idea though.

Frakking Best Buys keeps suckering me into this sale. Just got a $10 RZ Cert in my e-mail and used that to get Blade 2 and Predator 2 for $4.99 each from bb.com since these were two titles I could never find in-store. So now I have DVD versions of those movies I need to get rid of.

Has anybody had any luck getting overrides and U&S accepted on mispriced movies? My store has copies of Role Models marked $9.99 but they ring up for $12.99 when you bring them to the register.

Yeah I got an override a couple weeks back on "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" when it was mispriced.

Picked up 5 year engagement for $5, hopefully it was a good blind buy... It took me a solid 10 minutes to pick this out which means I ran out of movies I want to buy, and now buying movies just to use the coupon.

Ditto this I just bought two of the twilight films today because there was nothing left I needed or wanted.

Personally, I didn't care for it. But I've seen plenty of feedback from people that love it.

I picked up Ted for $10, Dredd 3D for $8, and Liar Liar for $8. I think that wraps up this round for me. Debated Lincoln Lawyer and/or Prince of Persia, but didn't pull the trigger.

Picked up 4 Film Favorites Modern Comedies, Ripper Street, Merlin Season 4, and Robin Hood BBC for $15 AC, as well as Jurassic Park 3 for $8 AC.

Do you know if you can send it a digital copy disc for the offer?

I feel bad for you...

I'm going to pick up The Spy Who Loved me for $10 tomorrow since that's the last Bond blu I need. I would have PMed it to Frys a week or two ago for $7 like I did the other ones I was missing, but for some reason that one was the only one they didn't have at $7.

Does anyone know offhand the price of that comic bluray pack Best Buy has, the one with The Crow, Conan, Kick-Ass, Punisher and The Spirit? I'd look it up myself but I can't remember what they're calling it.

i know im mad late with the info but i just got back from a best buy and it is $9.99 after coupon. I saw 1 left and grabbed it cuz i had 1 coupon left, was gonna get kickass anyway, so 4 more movies is great.

This was the last day. I went to PM Back to the Future Trilogy, which is $17.49 at Costco to get it for $12.49 but Best Buy wouldn't PM because Costco was closed.

Picked up Strike Back Season 1 $20 & Strike Back Season 2 $23 and Total Recall (2012).  I wonder Strike Back Season 1/2 is worth $25 or less?  Possible price dropping down more ??

I finally got around to watching it last night with the lady and we both liked it, its no Forgetting Sarah Marshall but worth my $5

Walked into best buy this morning and the sign was still up. Had three left and I used them this morning. Manager actually saw it ended the 10th but still allowed it cause the sign was up.

Nice!

Another great sale is in the books. See you guys in a few months!

After the great deals I got this time around, I cannot wait for the next one. It would be awesome if they brought it again for the holiday season.

It will be back in October

i still dont know why they just dont do it all the time and start doing blu-ray too

For the same reason that they don't just mark their blu rays $5 cheaper and permanently cut out the middleman.  By doing it periodically, it becomes a marketing promotion that brings people in.

Putting a limit (time/quantity) on something makes it seem more special than it is, and nudges people towards decisions they wanted them to make.  Remember, Best Buy doesn't want you to come in and buy just 5 blu rays.  They want you to come in, buy 5 blu rays, and maybe walk out with a CD or a game too (since you were there anyway).

I know I've also made impulse buys just because I had the $5 coupon and wanted to use them all. So I've bought stuff that actually are the same price or lower now without the $5 off.

Any news on when/if upgrade and save is coming back for October?  I have some dvds that stare at me hatefully everytime I walk by, they need to go.

No. All the U&S coupons are in-store only since they all use the same barcode.

It's probably gone for good, since I bet few of the used DVDs they bought for $5 they were able to re-sell at a profit, or even break even, unless people sold a lot of their Disney or Critereon Collection.

Actually they probably sent them to the recycle bin. They have had a general non-U&S recycle bin for DVDs and CDs for years.

It would be hard to sell a DVD for 5+ these days.

I'm pretty sure all the dvds they collected were recycled, seems like that gets mentioned at every U&S.  Also probably why they don't care about the condition of the dvd as long as its at least legit.

They check the condition, I don't know if anything has ever been rejected but if it's getting recycled I don't see the point.

They are checking to make sure they aren't burned, porn, or any other type of disc that isn't accepted for the promo.

Maybe BB corporate collects the DVD's to send out to Goodwill stores for a charity tax write-off?  Or, I guess recycling them also gives them an environmental tax break.  Money is usually involved in stuff like this.

U&S is dead, period. Best Buy has cut back their media department by like 50 to 75 percent, there is no reason to run this kind of program anymore and it isn't even their focus anymore. They are basically just a rental company now for their floor space.
