While this can't really be said for Xillia, as that game's non-essential content was horribly dummed down, Tales games are usually far too complex, precise, and finicky for the guides to be worth anything. The one for Symphonia, for instance, is beyond useless. Hopefully it looks nice, though, as I always find value in these CE guides having high quality presentation.
It's apparently written by the author of the Ni no Kuni guide (Howard Grossman), so maybe it'll be good...?

Great news. Glad to see they are them making one after not getting anything for Xilla 1 or Graces
yah its pretty crappy that they usually only hook the Japanese up with guides but here its usually to much trouble, just preordered but since I have no interest in the games CE, unless they announce a limited edition, will wait for the soon after price drop plus since I usually beat the game soon after release, I miss out on some of the good dlc costumes and if they are 3 dollars again, will wait till the 20 price hits, when companies release costumes months after release, its pretty pathetic, most people have played it once or twice so why bother paying for dlc you wont use, unless its extra level or something meaty, late in the game costume dlc is just bad business.

Your comment confused me. Are you saying Prima is the worst? Or Brady?

Not that it matters, they're both pretty terrible (unless David Hodgson is the author).
Lately, Prima has been publishing better guides than Brady, so I interpreted his comment as such.

And as I posted, the ToX2 guide is by Howard Grossman, who wrote the Ni no Kuni guide (also published by Prima); wasn't that guide pretty good?

Yes the Ni No Kuni guide was great (especially since I got it for a penny at Gamestop :p ).

Added to the OP (thanks for the heads up, ithebigc)

  • Battlefield Hardline
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • The Sims 4
  • Skylanders Trap Team
  • Tales of Xillia 2
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Removed all the old crap in the OP and put it into the archive.

I cannot seem to drag the book cover pictures from Amazon to the post.  CAG has some kind of new programming that is prohibiting that.

Hopefully @tiredjohn can look into it.

Anyone know why AZ's prices have gone up $5-$7 on these? Now it's almost the same price as buying the game plus guide offers that BB & GS have.

I don't think I can get that Bayonetta 2 guide if it's by anyone other than FuturePress. It can never match up. I'd feel better if it had 400+ pages but at only 288 there's no way they'll be able to cram all the info that the FuturePress guide had on the first game.

Hopefully Best Buy carries it, we tend to get a good employee discount on the game guides. No way I'd pay close to MSRP for that (despite how nice it looks).

Wow, that Inquisition guide is super expensive. Looks quite nice, though. High quality...

Yeahhhhhhhh.........no. No way I'm buying guides for $80+. It's already bad enough that Prima took over doing the Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed guide from Piggyback, who released the best guides and previously handled the guides for both series. Now they're trying to make CE of CE guides themselves by including trinkets that wouldn't look out of place in the actual CE of the game. Who has money to spare on guides that are more expensive than the standard edition of the game itself?

If Xillia 2 is similar to the first, then that guide may actually suffice. If it was more like the more complex *cough much fucking better* Tales games of old (say Symphonia - Vesperia) then that guide would be a glorified artbook at best lol.

Xillia 2 apparently has a lot more sidequests and hidden stuff than the first. From everything I've heard, it's back to the Vesperia and/or Graces level again. Xillia really took it easy in that department. Hardly and missables.

Thanks for the updates, everyone.  I have added Dragon Age Inquisitor edition and Assassin's Creed Unity Initiate edition to the OP.  Also added Hyrule Warriors.

Do you guys tend to get much value out of strategy guides?

I mostly play my games blind although I have resorted to online walkthroughs for things like the Final Fantasy remake on PSP. Newer games seem to have easier learning curves/more obvious objectives.

It's never occurred to me to spend $ on a guide although I can sort of see the appeal of having a hardcover book based on one of your favorite games (I picked up the physical Hyrule Historia) as a collectible. Are most guides now a combination walkthrough/reference plus art book?

This trend of Collector's Editions of guides that come with physical bonuses is interesting but now it's getting to a point where you can spend $150 on the CE of a game and another $80 on the CE of its guide.. kind of crazy.

Last edited by a moderator:
Yeah, was thinking the same thing - the actual MSRP of these new guides is $120.  That's nearly the same price for the game & whatever CE stuff comes with it.  I usually pick up the CE guides when they are a few bucks because I like having them in the collection for games I like and the extra little lithographs and stuff are pretty sweet, but for $120 and taking up as much space on a shelf as the actual CE - nah, not likely going to happen.

I always wait for it to penny out.  I always veiwed the guides as art books now a days anyways since the artbook in CE editions suck and no manuals of any kind and anything on the internet are better with guides.

Just check out the CE guides for Ass Creed 2.  Its practically an architecture book of Europe and I think thats what made the early Ass creed 2 and brother hood games great too.

Amazon's listing for the ToX2 CE guide has updated with what exactly the "exclusive DLC" is: an "exclusive PS3 Dynamic Theme".

Looks sweet, but will a guide even be needed for this game? Isn't it a hack and slash?

Might get it for the collection if I can get it cheap enough.

Anyone else get their order for Xillia 2 CE guide delayed today that ordered from Amazon? Just got a email asking for me to approve the delay on it =/

Yeah, which is really dumb as they kept advertising it as "guaranteed delivery August 19" forever. Epic fail. At least complaining got me another month of Prime plus $10 credit.

Ah, I was wondering what happened to that 3DS guide listing.....I guess it makes sense to do one giant guide.
I locked in a pre-order for the Hardcover late last week - ~$22 is a great price! :D

Any word on a Hardcover guide for the new Pokemon games?
Here's hoping it's standard sized, if there is one (unlike that stupid X/Y mini-guide).

Late addition, but Destiny does have a CE guide.

I just checked my order on the Dragon Age Inquisition Inquisitor's Guide and it said it required attention. I believe I confirmed that I am willing to wait a little longer for it. It did list a date of December 14. Did anyone else get this? I flew through it so fast that I didn't even pay attention to what the heck I was doing, and I can't go back to check, sadly. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it's a good thing because I have bought Lords of the Fallen CE, Assassin's Creed Unity CE, and on Tuesday 18th, I will have also purchased Dragon Age Inquisitor Edition (which I had to pay $270 for because of damn resellers), Far Cry 4 CE, and WWE 2K15 Hulkamania Edition. So it's kind of a good thing that I don't have to buy this guide immediately. The bad thing is that it's a guide. What the heck is the point of buying it a month after it comes out?

Probably too late now, but GS has the Inquisitor's Edition w/standard CE guide for $210 online right now for PS4 & XB1.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually saw that this morning and placed an order for one. It came out to $240 after tax and shipping. I am in the process of trying to get a refund on ebay. The seller at the time had 45 feedback and 1 negative. Now they have 61 and 3 negative, one for WWE 2K15 Hulkamania where the person said it was shipped to wrong address and one guy who paid $950 for an iphone, but was sent a CD. This person reeks of a scammer. I also noticed that my item was marked as delivered on 11/12, which isn't possible. Tracking shows it went to the post office in Tennessee, which is weird because the item location was supposed to be Beverly Hills. I am hoping to get my $270 back so I can save $30 and have a guide on top.

By the way, I was referring to the Inquisitor's Guide with the bookmarks and pen in my post above.

I got the same email from Amazon about the DA:I guide too, Dec 14th, on the plus side it is a nice reprieve for my wallet. They did this before with the release of the Tales of Xillia 2 hard cover guide. It was delayed a week past the initial date and I ended up buying my copy from bestbuy for about amazon's price and got it 4 days before amazon was going to be able to ship it.

Are there any pictures of the chalice from the

Assassin's Creed Unity: Prima Official Initiate Edition
anywhere, I can't find a video or anything.
