Nothing was directed at anyone in particular. I was being general. I'm just positively floored that people complain about getting stuff for free. It's like being offered free pizza and crying "I don't like pepperoni!"

With regard to breakfuss' specific points:

  • You're paying for playstation plus, *not* the games, which makes them "free" by that definition. Stop being pedantic. Xbox LIVE didn't do free games until months or a year after Sony was doing them. MS only recently started doing two games per month. It was one game per month previously, and those games weren't very good. With the Xbox's considerable library, there is no reason to offer Crackdown or Gears of War 1 while Sony is offering Bioshock Infinite (not the same months, but you catch my meaning).
  • Your opinion of a game notwithstanding, I find it unnecessary to call a selection of "free" or "fringe benefit" games trash when they are objectively good, fun games.
  • You're certainly allowed to express dissatisfaction, as much as I'm alowed to express my dissatisfaction of people bitching over freebies.
  • You're posting in a thread about PSN Weekly Deals. If you want to say "that's not cheap enough" because Child of Light is $13 instead of $10, fine. But free is free, regardless of the source.

With regard to expressing dissatisfaction and adulation: I'm really only interested in one of the six games (since I don't have a Vita), but I don't bitch about the selection because Sony doesn't care, it's annoying to your fellow forum-goers, and there's always next month :)
Dude, it's slidecage. Just ignore him, and move on.

There is so much wrong in this post I don't even know where to begin. "We're paying for PlayStation Plus and the games are free"? So what exactly are we paying for when buy PS+? Automatic updates? You can't say we're buying it for PS4 multiplayer because most PS+ members don't even have a PS4. PS+ has been around a hell of a lot longer than PS4 has.

Your pizza analogy makes no sense either. A more apt comparison would be if you said we're paying for Netflix and we get the movies for free, which obviously makes no sense. No one would ever say that. You have to stop saying "free" because if you pay even a penny for it, by definition, it's not free. Do you see Sony saying "Buy PS4 multiplayer or automatic updates, get the games free"? Most people are in it for the games. That's certainly how Sony markets PS+.

Having said that, it would be very difficult not to get your money's worth at $2.50 to $4 a month. Ever since Instant Game Collection was introduced, PS+ has been worth it every single month as far as I'm concerned. Even more so if you have more than one PlayStation system.

Sigh, none of my downloaded games are working right now, presumably because of the maintenance? Frustrating, cause it was literally logged into and playing them on PSN yesterday--thought that maintenance want supposed to impact your games in that case.

Love to know where your getting the PSN+ for 24 bucks a year (you said 2 to 4 bucks a month ) so take the low end
I bought a bunch from target at $15 (price mistake) and another bunch at $30 last black friday. I think on this site stating it costs $2-4 ($24 to $48) is reasonable... I could have went lower since I think I'm still technically on a $15 card.

Hell, I think $5 a month would be worth it just for the fucking drama every damn month, let alone the free games, discounts, and other goodies. If there were no sales, I'd have no issue picking up a year for $50. That's less than the price of one new retail game and I'll get at least 6x12 = 72 games out of it. Of those, even if I only enjoy 10% that's 7 games I've enjoyed for a reasonable price (and I usually enjoy a way higher %).

And I probably save more than $50 due to the sales every week anyway. A dollar here, five dollars there adds up quick.

Depends on the game, for instance, a lot of Capcom downloadable games have a 3rd party DRM which requires a connection in order to play.

Everybody knows the 'free' games aren't free.   No shit, sherlocks.  It's obvious shorthand that makes conversation easier and everyone understands.... except those that need to keep pointing out it's not 'free', I suppose.   But we've had people continuously point it out for years now, don't see an end to it.

Oh, and in other news:   gamers that insult entire dev teams for investing their time and money into the hobby they love  just because they're only a small handful of dedicated people (indies) living off poptarts  and not 200+ (salaried) person corporate teams are disrespectful as hell.    Get some perspective.    Be thankful there are people that love our hobby so much they'll go to such great lengths.

All (non-online only) ps4 games should work, even during maintenance if you have your console set as primary.   Seems like some people are having issues, which sounds like a bug that is only being identified now that psn is actually undergoing maintenance.   It's definitely not 'as designed', hopefully they solve the issue for those having it.

I had Plus before the free games just cause of the massive discounts they give on some titles. I've paid only $30 a year every year I've had it, so It was always worth it. With the free games, it just made it that more of a deal.

Still doesn't change that it's probably the weakest month to me. But I don't really care, cause I bought a bunch of RPGs in the last few weeks in sales to last me well past next month.

Hahahaha, oh please. Indie devs are no more passionate about their work than most people in corporate situations. That's the same condescending bullshit that douche from Team Meat tried to peddle. Not everyone can make a living developing "retro" puzzle platformers.

You forget that PS+ is older than the free games. What were you paying for then? My logic is: there are games on sale with PS+, like the other weekly deals, and then there are games we don't pay for as part of PS+. I'm not paying any more than the $50 I already spent for the year, so I short-hand it to "free." Sorry if this offends you.

How Sony markets PS+ is irrelevant. The fact is, these games drop in price to $0 on Sony's store for a month, then they spring right back up to regular price the subsequent month. If you don't "buy" the games during that month when the price is 0, you can't get the game at that price again, regardless of your membership status. I got my first PS+ membership in April, but I can't backtrack to all the previous offerings because they're not free anymore. I have to pay money for these games, regardless of the fact that I am now a Plus member.

Rented/borrowed/free...let's not get lost in semantics. The point is that PS+ isn't a gift from some diety. You've suggested that we, as paying customers, don't have a right to complain because Sony is just so good to us and that is crazy talk. You'll never hear me say PS+ isn't a great deal because it obviously is. On any given week it more than pays for itself. Doesn't mean I can't dislike certain aspects or next month's "free" games.

I agree with the gist of your argument. However, if games are to be treated as art then we should apply the same subjective standard. Just because someone works hard at creating a piece of art it doesn't mean that it automatically warrants the appreciation and respect of others. There are plenty of great artists, musicians, filmmakers, actors and game developers who were never given the time of day and that's okay. People are free to choose how they want to spend their free time and money.

No, but the free games are! :D/

It blows my mind that folks complain about free stuff, that's all. In this world where people have ridiculously huge backlogs (I know I do) having a "slower" month can be a good thing.

You'll never hear me say PS+ isn't a great deal because it obviously is. On any given week it more than pays for itself. Doesn't mean I can't dislike certain aspects or next month's "free" games.
Sure, dislike all you want, but my original point remains. People bitch about free games, and I don't understand why.

Just a reminder, from the OP: "Don't Argue About Free vs. "Free", Please"
Hahaha, too true. I thought that applied more to the "freemium" games like Warframe and such. But either way, you're right; I'm done. I've said my piece. I'll just go on enjoying my free games, and crack open a beer while folks complain about the pepperonis.

We are still having an argument about what constitutes a free game?
Yeah, I don't get what there is to get worked up about besides opinions of whether the lineup for the month is to their liking. I get my money's worth out of PS+ through sales, so the games are a great bonus when there are great games each month.

Because PS+ games of the month is the primary reason some people PURCHASED the subscription service, if the selections for the month come along and they are offering nothing of interest to that person why would they not express disappointment?

Why would there be a problem with that? I'd suggest at least trying the games out first before declaring them to be terrible, but people are allowed to like or dislike whatever they want for whatever reasons they have.

I'm also disappointed at next month.  But, as others have mentioned, the PS+ sales alone make my yearly cost worthwhile.  The only small indie game from PS+ I've stuck with and enjoyed has been Mercenary Kings.

I tried picking up Puppeteer since I heard a lot of positive things about it.  I don't understand the praise.  Seems like a linear and ugly rehash of LBP-style platforming.

On just the PS4 alone you get 24 games for that annual price. I find it hard to believe that out of those 24 games someone did not get their money's worth especially if they pick up PS+ subscriptions on Black Friday for $30. And then if you have a PS3 and/or Vita that number doubles or triples. There are going to be months that you find fantastic that others don't and then the opposite may occur the next month, but I'm certain in a 1 year time frame over all those games it all balances out. Luckily I enjoy most games so it's an insane value for me, I'd say so far on the PS4 there have been only 2 or 3 games I have little interest in, and on the flip side there have been some major surprises I may have missed like Mercenary Kings and Stick it to the Man! to name a few.

I can't say I'm surprised that it's Breakfuss making a big deal out of with "And here we go. Indie defense force on the scene." where affa's long post before it was the only thing I could see that could be called an indie defense force post. Of course, that then incites others to argue about all of that stuff and the rest is history.
What are you talking about? Why don't you go back and read before posting erroneously. I gave my opinion on the new games and dipped. The same as I do every month. You and others are the ones who decided to respond. And it was you who made that hilarious slidecage joke. Which is fine, but don't act like I'm the one who made it into a big deal.

You were griping about an onslaught of indie defense posts coming after you when it was just a long affa post speaking generally, which then arrived to respond to you. Saying nobody can sway your opinion is the sort of thing you say when you don't want people to respond to you, right?

I don't think I ever responded to any of your opinions on the PS+ lineup and no, making a joke about you and slidecage making back-to-back posts with the same opinion isn't responding/complaining/arguing/inciting/chiding/attacking your opinions.

More Geometry Wars is never a bad thing, though coming from a new developer I'll remain cautious. GW2 was pretty much perfection, so I'm not sure where they are going to be able to improve with this new one.

Lucid Games is made up of former GW people, though I don't know how many of them worked on the first two games. Galaxies offered up some cool new things like the gem multiplier that you saw in GW2 and stages of varying shapes that change up the strategy a bit. They seem to at least be doing different shapes for stages and they're offering a bunch of modes like GW2.

On what basis did I say my opinion couldn't be swayed, though?! Stop taking shit out of context. It's patronizing to try and insulate "indies" from criticism simply because they have smaller budgets/teams. Just as bad as dismissing them for that reason, which I assume is what affa was getting at. That was the point I was making. Damn.

I can't believe people continue to conflate the overall value of Plus with opinions about the quality of "free" games for a given month. It's a lazy argument to constantly fall back on. If you want to discuss the merits of the titles in question then do that, please. Save the testimonials about how good Sony has been to you for another time. No one here disputed how awesome PS+ is - we get it.

Of course. Clearly not all indie games are good. Clearly not all AAA games are good.

Nobody is claiming all indie games are good. Plenty of people clearly state all indie games are trash.

I am stating those specific people are being incredibly disrespectful. It's like people who claim to love, say, rock n' roll but dismiss garage bands out of hand. That's how most musicians of note get their start, develop their talents, get noticed. It's all part of the same creative ecosystem, it's all people who love music enough to devote a significant part of their lives to it. It's no different than with gaming.

But fuck the 3 guys who blew through their life savings and put out a game that has retro-graphics because they couldn't afford to put a million dollars into asset creation, right? [i know you're not the person saying that, but clearly some do]. God damn fucking indies. As if those 3 guys, had they not released that game with retro graphics, would have created a AAA game but chose not to.

Watching the reaction in various communities this week to the ps+ entries has been enlightening. I never realized so many gamers actually hate games and developers so much. Just a pure, crystallized, hatred that they spew out at the very people making games for them to play. It's gross.

Because PS+ games of the month is the primary reason some people PURCHASED the subscription service, if the selections for the month come along and they are offering nothing of interest to that person why would they not express disappointment?
It's not the expressing of disappointment that anyone has issue with. There have been months that I've owned everything, or disliked everything. That comes with the territory. Not once, however, did I start insulting developers, accusing Sony of intentionally devaluing a service, or threaten to leave the service just because a month was bad.

Some people here expressed disappointment maturely. Many, many others here and around the net did not. There's 'expressing disappointment', and then there are hissyfits not worthy of a six year old.

When many of those people are calling some well-received games (like Velocity, TxK, etc) 'trash' then fireworks occur, no different that when some person comes in here and decides to, say, shit on the gameplay of TLOU or D*Souls or whatever.

I've got him on ignore.
And this is precisely why I wish you hadn't singled me out, @frisky. Because it just fuels nasty immaturity like this. The sweet irony being that I'm probably the ONLY person here who sticks up for either one of you when people trash you. Lol. But whatever, I digress.

"Sorry but I can't be guilted into liking a game simply because someone made it in their dorm room." aka I'm not going to change my mind about these games.
Ok? And? I stick by that. My opinion cannot be swayed by that sort of thing. I don't see games through a lens of "indie" or "AAA". And thus my disappointment has shit to do with a large portion of next month's games being independent. How the fuck is that wrong of me to say?

Is there any way i can buy Velocity 2x and get it earlier? Screw free, I'll pay $10 for that shit.
I bought Surge Deluxe Day 1 to support them for Velocity. Which was well worth it, great game.

I also bought Furmins to support Housemarq for Resogun. Though that wasn't nearly as good as Surge Deluxe.

And *crickets*. So quick to "call people out" but mysteriously at a loss for words when I clarify my position. In the future at least understand what you're talking about before responding to me.

I appreciate the people who've actually discussed why they think these games are worth a shot instead of making reductive arguments about "indie" development. As for TxK and Velocity, I'm just not very good at those sort of twitched based games. Hell, Entwined even gave me trouble and that's immeasurably easier. The genre just isn't my cup of tea. Same with Joe Danger. Played it on PS3 and never really got the swing of it. It's funny because I didn't even realize it was "indie". I'll try Superfriends but that'll depend on whether I can get my girlfriend (who doesn't game much) to play with me.

So, again, it's completely fair of me to say next month's selection is disappointing, especially when it's lacking in the usual diversity. I'm not into getting high scores and shit. Just as some people aren't into platformers. But the preceding months have been awesome and I've stated so several times. Glad people here are open to opinions.

You played the victim with the "indie defense force" comment when nobody was attacking you and then incited arguments by suggesting nobody could change your opinion anyway when you didn't want anybody to respond to your post. You're not as innocent as you claim to be, but I'll drop it so we can move on.

Edit:  at Breakfuss' snippy post because I didn't respond to his post within seconds. Sorry, but when the Browns' game is on, my attention focuses more on that than continuing this dumb argument. Feel free to twist that into whatever narrative you wish to make up to enhance your point.

Nobody was ever trying to silence your negative opinion, so this constant point that everybody here wants to keep you from saying negative things about PS+ is a complete fabrication because you want to portray yourself as the oppressed rebel that dares to not think everything is perfect about it.

Just picked up Dangranabanana.   About to pick up Transistor.   Debating on Trials Fusion.. I fear it'll kick off my 'need to 3 star ridiculously hard time/precision trials'.   I actually enjoyed Urban Trial Freestyle and I know that's just a janky copy... decisions, decisions.

Plat'd Killzone Mercs (vita).  Absolutely fantastic game.  Solid on all fronts.   Last trophy is a grind nightmare though.  Rest of them are fair.   Plat'd Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal recently as well.   Another great game -- R&C gameplay plus base defense... it got tons of hate, I don't understand why... single player it basically felt like an R&C game with a touch of strategy.

Trying to get through God of War (vita).  Over the years I've started GoW about 6 times, always get to around the harpies (that large desert section, actually, iirc), and lose interest.  I'm hoping the pick up and play nature of the vita helps me get through it (no flipping discs to a new game, so it's easier to go back to it for 20 minutes).

Anyone here play backgammon and have it for vita?   Best case? Serious players.  I don't even know if there are online trophies, I just want people to play backgammon with.  I'm serious in so far as I've actually read books on backgammon, though i'm rusty (well, not that you can get all that rusty with backgammon).

My dislike for indies stems more of how much praise and limelight they are getting on PS4 and Vita as if they are the end all be all direction of the future of gaming. Sony in particular is using this indie campaign for lack of a better term to hide the lack of content they are providing on their systems.

If indies are the future of gaming, that is extremely depressing as from my experience indies lack the polish and magic that I crave from traditional games.

I've yet to play an indie that gives me a full fledged traditional gaming experience I get from retail titles. I've had positive experiences (cave story, limbo were great solid games) but they are bite sized experiences, snacks to regular gaming meals. I liken indies to virtual console titles.

It just sucks seeing week after week of these smaller gaming experiences replacing the regular releases of traditional games. It's as if a music lover was only given a choice of several new garage band albums to buy or a movie buff was only given new independent films to watch each week.

You're flatout wrong and it's infuriating. Even after I clarified. READ. My point was that a game's status as "indie" or "AAA" does not matter. It had no bearing on my disappointment in next month's PS+ selection. None. And while I do not agree with indie bashing, I also don't think we should be any less critical of them. And that is what I responded to.

How is that inciting shit? Playing victim? I know I'm long winded at times, and need to work on that. But if you're not going to have the decency to read everything I write, please just shut the fuck up. Please. Don't misquote me to make your silly point. Because what I said was fair and reasonable.
