Nintendo - Wii U 32GB Console Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land Bundle - Black

$299.99 9/15/14 release date

I'm less likely to buy a Wii U since the announcement of the "New Nintendo 3DS." The last Nintendo console I bought was the 64. Since then, I've only bought Nintendo handhelds. Wanted a Wii U for mario kart and smash but 3DS fragmentation means that I'll eventually allocate my Nintendo money on the new 3ds instead. Nintendo seems rudderless at this point. I hope their next "fusion" handheld project makes for a powerful successor. If there is a crazy sale and bundle, it's possible that I could also get a wii u.
cant wait for the new 3ds to hit so gamestop can screw over people. Worker their said O the new 3ds WONT play the old 3ds games so you better sell them now before your games are worthless to a few people the other day.

The Wii U is Nintendo's current generation console. Power has nothing to do with it.
But in terms of specs and features, it really is last gen, and that's what most people care about. Doesn't matter when they released it if the features are more in line with the last generation (and in many cases, not even matching those older consoles).

I suppose things like free online and BC are considered last gen. J/K

People don't buy Nintendo's systems (or shouldn't) for the specs. They buy them to play Nintendo games. The specs are irrelevant.

The specs are relevant when so many things are left out from the console (internal HDD, ethernet port, DVD/Bluray compatibility, USB 2.0 instead of 3.0, etc.). Nintendo clearly pared the base console way back to accommodate the cost of the gamepad, and it shows. A paltry 2gb of RAM (1gb for games) doesn't help either.

Unfortunately, even Wikipedia mentions the Wii U's lack of power/features as a factor, having people question it's "eigth generation" categorization (in your same link):

Nintendo announced their successor to the Wii, the Wii U, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011 on June 7, 2011.[40] After the announcement, several journalists classified the system as the first eighth generation home console.[22][41][42] However, prominent sources have brought this into speculation because of its comparative lack of power with respect to the announced specifications for PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
I think most gaming journalism websites consider Wii U in the same group with the 360 and PS3, for practical purposes.

A console's "generation" doesn't refer to its power and instead refers to the period of time it was sold on the marketplace. For instance, the Wii is a seventh generation console; or are you going to argue that as well?

The Wii as well didn't measure up to the other "seventh generation" consoles, in terms of specs, features, etc. So yeah, Nintendo is basically a generation behind when it comes to hardware, they just don't aim very high in that area.

I think most people would agree that the Wii became a hit based on the waggle-control fad alone, not its specs, which were far below its competition. And it died years earlier than its competition, when the fad fizzled out. 360 and PS3 are still going strong today, and the Wii died years ago.

I never understood the "Wii U isn't next-gen" argument. The Dreamcast was "next-gen" in 1999 even though the Xbox, GCN and PS2 would be more powerful. No one said the DC was in the same gen as the PS1/N64/Saturn after it got endless PS1 ports that were somewhat prettier but not mind blowingly prettier.

N64: 94Mhz CPU, 4MB RAM Dreamcast: 200Mhz CPU, 16MB RAM is a big enough difference to be "next-gen" at the time and viewed as "next-gen enough" historically BUT the Wii U having 4 times the RAM/3 times the eDRAM as Xbox 360 and a different, albeit lower clocked PowerPC CPU isn't enough for some people. I think its just a negative perception that follows Nintendo regardless if its accurate or wrong. People will always say Nintendo releases under-powered consoles even if they released the PS4 in a Wii U shell.
