FEAR 1 is an excellent horror-themed FPS. Definitely make sure you listen and pay attention to any notes, phone call recordings, and in-game Lore stuff + whatnot to properly piece the story & everything altogether. AI was often quite tough - so, be prepared to quick-save a lot; and the tough-as-nails AI also adds to the tension here. Combat in this game, especially with its allowed usage of the slow-motion Max Payne-style Bullet-Time, was absolutely excellent. Highly recommend it. One of my favorite FPS's of all time.
FEAR 1: Extraction Point is good, but nowhere as great as the base-game. It's more FEAR 1, which certainly isn't a bad thing - though it breaks no real new ground here, gameplay-wise + story-wise. Still, can't really go wrong w/ this one, IMHO.
FEAR 1: Perseus Mandate expansion is okay, but eh - it's nothing special. Felt like there was less emphasis on the horror-stuff here. This is the worst out of the three pieces of FEAR 1 (3 part of FEAR 1 are: FEAR 1 base-game, Extraction Point, and Perseus Mandate).
FEAR 2 is very good, but nowhere as great as the original FEAR 1. A lot of the same horror tricks that were in FEAR 1 are here - which makes this game re-tread that stuff and feel like it's predictably rehashing the jump-scares + psychological scares. While the original FEAR was a leader by doing the horror-elements and things it it did, this is not.
FEAR 2 also is not a leader in the FPS genre, as it also tries to follow FPS Tropes 101 - HL1-style tram ride (but with shooting elements here); vehicle sections (think HL2 w/ its vehicule levels or especially Riddick: Butcher Bay as there is a mech section here); rail gun sections (any of the CoD games, anyone?); and any every beat-to-death FPS trope's in here. Even despite these tropes, combat's still pretty good here - though I wasn't super-thrilled w/ the game not really having a difficulty somewhere b/t the lowest and middle diffculty, since it now uses Autosaves (instead of save anytime). Story's still quite good here, also. Despite its few missteps, it's still certainly worth playing.
Never played FEAR 2: Reborn DLC. Can't speak on it.
FEAR 3 was NOT by Monolith, meanwhile FEAR 1 (base-game) + FEAR 2 were. FEAR 3 does add a cool first-person cover mechanic, but that's about it. This felt more like a CoD-style linear FPS, so it did not really feel like it was really enough horror-themed or anything. FEAR 3 was okay, but certainly nothing special.
IMHO - if you're playing FEAR series, you're best off playing FEAR 1 base-game + Extraction Point; and FEAR 2 base-game.
