Also, it's worth noting that essentially no one does exclusive releases on LRG. Some of their physical releases are exclusive by default, but all of these games are available digitally, usually from numerous different sources. (and on multiple platforms) So there will be a PSN, XBox Live, Steam version of Night Trap that you can get if you miss out on the LRG release.

The 3rd Night Trap cover is exclusive to the rewards program:

Lol. Night Trap. I remember playing through that in middle school expecting something super awesome to happen- I can never have that time back.

It was a joke. Most of the saga cd titles were. Make my video? Lol.

"Hit the tubes dogmeat!"
watched a playthrough of Sewer Shark a few months ago, there's no way I'm ever gonna actually manage to play through that entire thing

Try silpheed. I remember thinking it was so cool when the pilots said things like:

"I cain't shake em damnit!"
"I'm hit, hit bad damnit!"
"God damn sightseers time to go back to hell!"
"Good tally ho look at the size of that thing!@

I used to play just to hear it.

Are these games really good or just really limited so that's why people want them?
It's a case-by-case basis sort of thing. Some of the LRG releases are legit good games. Some are a bit more so-so. The recently announced Night Trap is notorious for being hot garbage. It's going to be a popular release, but more for its notoriety than the quality of the actual title.

One of the recent releases, Flinthook, was a bit of a question mark, as the game itself hadn't been released in full at that point. But it has since come out on digital platforms, and has been garnering quite a few positive reviews. I was very glad that I ordered a copy of that one, as it was a little bit of a risk. Most of the other LRG releases are of games that have already been out for quite some time on digital platforms, so you should be able to get an idea as to how good they are ahead of time. Look up their review scores on Steam if you want an idea.

The Sega CD did have a handful of really good games as well. Earthworm Jim had a special ed, and both Lunar 1 & 2, and Snatcher of course is not only a great Sega CD game, but one of my top 10 all time favs. But yeah, there was a good amount of crap. LOL

Sega cd and jaguar are the only two systems I regret buying. Got the 3D0 when they gave out tons of free games with it but it was regrettable as well.

I played sonic cd and jrpgs to death on sega cd though. I liked wonderdog too. Had snatcher on PCE.

When you can list basically ever good game a platform had in less than 50 words you know it was a bad deal.

Kind of pissed off about this. It means Sony is sometimes getting non-sample copies. We haven't sold or given copies to anyone outside of NC - so no idea how this dude in CA has a copy.
FYI, Sony has some corporate offices in San Diego. I don't know what they do there but you can always start there. As far as legalities, I'm ignorant on how it works or if you have a lawyer that can write a cease and desist order.

Yeah, I actually bought the CDX version which was pretty bad ass, and I bought most of my games at liquidation prices(same with the CDX), so it was a good buy for me at the time.

But I 100% agree with your overall thoughts, as all three of those systems where terrible overall, and I would say the 3DO was the worst of the bunch due to the cost of that one but it did have a good version of Street Fighter, if you could get a six button controller for it, but we made due with the stock pad, which sucked.

The Jaguar pretty much only had Tempest, so I would say the Sega CD was the best of the bunch, but that ain't saying much. As the image quality for full motion video on there was atrocious to say the least. I'm glad to see they cleaned up the image quality for Night Trap, as it's almost unplayable as it was.

My allowance was 5$ week. I sold candy at school that I got at a close out shop too- set me back four years buying those systems. Lol.

That jaguar AVP game killed my dreams.

The Sega CD had quite a few great games. The biggest problem was that most of its best games were also some of the least advertised. Not many people knew of the better games on the system. Most people simply knew the Sega CD as the home for all those early FMV games... like Night Trap. And that's not what you want to be remembered for.

The best version of Eternal Champions is supposed to be on the Sega CD. Several Sega CD ports got noticeably improved music support thanks to the CD format. The Sega CD version of Ecco the Dolphin is supposed to have a fantastic soundtrack.

Thankfully for video game nuts who like retro games, the Sega CD has very good emulation support. While hunting down games for it can be a bit of a hassle, getting games for it to run is easy if you have any sort of modern computer. I've run Sega CD games successfully off of a Raspberry Pi. The Sega CD also had no real copy protection, so copying Sega CD games is rather easy.

I'm hopeful that when FPGA development gets powerful enough, someone will design a legacy system with an optional disc drive. Then we can get some proper physical Sega CD support. (as well as Genesis, TurboGrfx, SNES, etc...)

When FPGAs get powerful enough?

Cheap low end FPGAs are capable of dwarfing anything from the 90s even with soft cores. A tiny $5 20K LE Cyclone II has enough logic to implement an entire 286+VGA+FDC+misc.  You can move up to 1 million+ LE chips at GHz speeds, then hybrid designs with modern multi core hard core ASICs built in too, far more than you need for a 7 MHz 68k and a 15 KHz video output. A Cyclone III or Spartan class can do pretty much anything from the 90s as a single SoC.

What exactly do you mean?

I'm actually investigating designing my own 90s style console with a true 16 bit 8086 (vs 8088) or 68000 and a Ensoniq ES5506 sound, but the best VDP off the shelf is a Yamaha V9990.  I want 4 layer 320x240 with truecolor, blending, and scale and rotate and hdma/hint so will be honing my VHDL doing a custom VDP in a Cyclone II instead.  I've yet to set up a 6.29 MHz dot clock and sync generator on a DE1 to even see if my Sony PVM can sync that.

Just...between video game collecting, guns, and boosted V8s, I'm having a hard time allocating finances for a proper electronics lab for a tertiary hobby... $1000 MSO that will collect dust on a bench is hard to swallow when LRG/Sony/Nintendo/etc won't slow down their releases :p

Nobody is flipping Rigols and Terrasic dev boards on eBay for 10x MSRP and they aren't limited to 1k units for life so they are a bit lower priority until the limited game collector market dies down a bit.

Re: Sega CD

Forget everything.  Just call it the Working Designs attachment.  Then it all makes sense.

I still have vivid memories of when I picked up Lunar II new in the store. I could tell you the unit in the mall and what corner of the floor plan the game was in like it was there yesterday despite that unit not having been a game store in 20 years.

And I actually beat Sewer Shark.

We have some huuuuuungry critters at....9 0 6 12.

I messed with it about a month ago seeing how terrible 64 color paletted  FMV looked in RGB without NTSC smudging to aid in dithering...blech.

But by far the best FMV game was Ground Zero Texas.

The cool thing about those old super expensive systems is that you can get them for really cheap nowadays for the most part, and there's a weird sense of satisfaction when you are sitting there playing Road Rash on the 3DO, remembering how everyone said it was the best, most realistic arcade perfect version of the game back in 1994 or whenever it was, but you thought you would never get one ever back then because they were $400 which would be like $700 adjusted for inflation but you bought one for 50 bucks in 2016. Yeah, it feels good to finally get to play that arcade perfect version of Road Rash, full motion video and all.

I wish I could find a TG16 for $50 today.

The soundtrack on road rash with all the Paw songs- that was awesome.

I more recently played Popful Mail on the Sega CD and boy is that game AWESOME!! I absolutely love the voice-over even though Working Designs took a lot of liberties with the translation.

Also it's insanely difficult.
I look forward to getting Night Trap, I actually don't have it for the Sega CD.

That jaguar AVP game killed my dreams.
I was so excited for Atari making a comeback when the Jaguar was announced. The prelaunch magazine coverage had me hyped. My gut feeling was that was going to be an amazing system and AVP was going to be fantastic. When I finally got to play AVP and realized how much it sucked, my dreams of Atari pretty much died then and I started to question my gut feeling. I never bought the system.

Thankfully when I finally got my TG16, my faith in my gut was restored as it was everything and more than I dreamed it would be from the old magazines. I always had dreamed of owning the system for Bonk and other games... but they just weren't in my local stores and I was lucky enough to have an NES back then because money in my family was tight.

I never owned a SEGA CD... so Night Trap holds no nostalgia with me. Mad Dog McCree, Who Shot Johnny Rock?, various Tex Murphy games, and Cliff Hanger hold much more nostalgia for me. Heck Dragon's Lair as well, though I've played that on so many systems since the old arcade original that I don't need it again. Really I don't need any of them again. I have all the Tex Murphy games over on Steam and still have my old PC originals of Mad Dog McCree and Who Shot Johnny Rock. For Cliff Hanger, most of the FMV was straight out of The Castle of Cagliostro, so I could just watch that.

It's nice LRG is getting some real surprise games. Even with Night Trap considered to be garbage, maybe it's the gateway to getting something truly great.

Popful Mail was brutal. I beat it on an emulator, thank god for the ability save anywhere.

You left out Corpse Killer. Now that was a good FMV game. Lol

Honestly, the demo disc that came with my sega cd got more play than anything- the information society videos were cool. Then there was that goofy "mammals" song by they might be giants.

And that "Black Pearl" song was hilarious and cool to me as a kid.

Anyone remember the first games that came with reward tickets?  Was it Oxenfree and Aqua Kitty DX?

I'm curious what the total would be right now for someone who bought the maximum of every release since.

How many tickets is that worth?

So you can still essentially can get all 3 since you're buying 2 and getting the one for free through rewards. Am I reading that correctly?

I'm curious because if the variant cover is 40 tickets, no one would be able to 'legally' have that many until probably June. I think the most one person could have now is 24-28 buying every game at its limit.

The reward form says:

In order to purchase rewards, you must provide the email address you use to purchase from Limited Run Games. As a measure to prevent the sale, transfer, and counterfeiting of rewards tickets, we will cross-reference your account at redemption to verify your tickets. Limited Run loyalty tickets are non-transferable and have no cash value.
Does that mean if someone like this tries to redeem all their tickets at once they'd be denied? I hope the cover is around long enough so that everyone who follows the rules can get the required amount.

Legally? So if someone does use their tickets to buy it they are doing something illegal and breaking the law? Come on its not that serious. Legitimately no one should be able to buy it if the rules have been followed.

Yeah it looks like he has 2 accounts because I have bought doubles (if allowed) of every LRG game and I have like 25 maybe.
