Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I found a 10% off coupon code for PSN in my email that expires today. It's here if anyone wants it:

FA5C4B2BJK
That's the same code that appeared last Tuesday on the store, so anybody can use it until it expires today if they haven't already.

Only the leader of the squad can invite you to the squad (which is dumb). So shoot me a friend request and message me sometime or throw me a game invite when I'm on Monster Hunter and I'll invite you once we're in the same lobby. You can do missions if I'm in the middle of a hunt, so you don't need to wait in town.
Wait, are you talking about the guild, the 16-player lobby, or the 4-player group? I'm not sure how the guild works since I haven't joined one yet. But for the lobby, its 16 people who all get to do their own things (story, quests, expedition) and if they want to team up, they can initiate a quest/expedition which lets them pick up to 3 other people to embark with from that lobby of 16 right? Or if they use an SOS flare, 3 other people can join them while the quest is in progress?

And quests are over automatically when it is complete, and everyone goes their separate ways after, meanwhile expedition is open-world in the hunting map with your group of 4 right?

I'm still a bit confused, but I think that's how the multiplayer and hunting with friends works?

There's light references to the worlds lore that has been previous addressed in games. Also some light references to Celceta specifically as this takes place after it in the adventure timeline. But yeah, it's not much as Ys stories are fairly self contained.

Hopefully they address all the issues to have it be a bit more presentable. I have to wonder what they did about the "Big Hole" translation among a few other very commonly used terms that were translated terribly.
I didn't have much issue with the original localization. I'm sure I wasn't the only one chuckling at "Big Hole" and a few of the other oddities. The only real problem with it to me was a few items had the wrong description. The game still easily made my top 3 for the year.

So BB took the easy route and started handing out $10 credit for those of us who didn't get the MHW Steelbok.

Because they sure as fuck weren't planning to ship one out and do the right thing..

What pisses me off the most which I didn't know until I opened it, was that the Collectors Edition doesn't come with the steelbook... Really Capcom? :nottalking:
I wish I wouldn't have received the steelbook because I'd have rather had the 10 bucks towards another game. :D

  • You can join up to 8 Squads.
  • Squads hold up to 50 people.
  • Only the leader can send invites.
  • In order for the leader to invite, the player must be in the same 16 player lobby.
  • Even if you're in an expedition or other mission, you're still in that lobby. It's not necessary for me to join in on a 4-player mission to invite.
  • Squads have a squad only lobby that they can join and nobody outside the squad can force their way into it without an invite from someone in the lobby.

Yes, people can do their own things separate from everybody else in the lobby. You can post missions with or without a password. People in the lobby will see it on the mission board, but anybody can see it if you throw up an SOS Flare. At the end of a mission, you can choose to stay as an expedition (camp) or return to base. Returning to base 'disbands' the group, but they're still in the same lobby. Unless they joined via SOS, then they return to their original lobby (that they never really 'left). After 10 minutes have passed on a quest, players who join after that point will no longer receive quest rewards (money/loot) and only receive bonus rewards (loot). This does not affect those who joined in the first 10 minutes.

Expeditions as a group can only be done in one of two ways:

  • Group for a mission, complete it and then select 'Stay at camp'
  • Someone goes to an expedition and fires off an SOS Flare, at which point everybody needs to quickly join before random people do. SOS Flares can also be turned off after firing one off the same way via the menu.

While the few items that had their descriptions switched were an issue, I had a bigger issue with the translation. It was more along the lines of important phrases not making real sense due to words being translated very poorly without proper thought to context. As well as things that XSeed previously translated in previous Ys games then being translated as something different by NISA, making me even more confused until I connected the dots. That rather annoyed me due to NISA saying that they'll respect XSeeds translation and keep it consistent. Obviously that did not happen.

It's like they got the license and then handed it off to a newbie translator and editor. Gameplay wise, yeah, the game is mostly fine. I didn't really care much for the whole defense system though.

I'm just rather big on lore because it's what really gets me into games and really enjoy them. That doesn't mean I don't rate gameplay highly however. They're all pieces of the same pie.

Since I've played the Ys games spread across so many years, and with seemingly random release order, I'm afraid the overall lore is basically lost on me forever. Each new release I have to check a wiki to see if there are returning characters I should remember.

I hope they didn't change "Big Hole" though, that's just hilarious, I love it.

Thanks for the feedback on Peach Beach. Went ahead and picked it up since it is down to $40 on Amazon putting it into my "ehhh screw it" threshold. Figure it will be a good distraction after I finish FF XII: ZA and before I start up Y's VIII now that the relocalization patch is out.

Done with Nier Automata (like. Everything.) Truly a wonderful game.

I might buy the OST down the line.
Glad you liked it. It's one of my absolute favorites. I own all the OSTs they've released so far and they're worth the price. I'd stay away from the Arranged & Unreleased one, though. It's got a few interesting tracks, but it's pretty underwhelming overall.

I recently got the vinyl box set in, and it's a beautiful collection.

The problem I have with "Big Hole" is that the name was in English to begin with in the Japanese version. Outside of correcting any Japanese Engrish, it didn't really need to be changed. I guess I'm just tired of listening to JP VO and hearing one thing and then reading subs that are something completely different than what was said in so many games.

And yeah, there aren't many references between each game and they don't have a whole lot of lore in general. Plus the games are not released in the order they take place either. They're all told from the standpoint that you're reading Adol's journals in the future. I feel like it wasn't until Ys VI that they started to actually begin experimenting with proper lore if I remember correctly. It's mostly evident in Ys VIII for sure along with VII and the Celceta remake. Granted Origins dropped a bunch as well, but it's very different than the rest of the games.

Originally I don't think I would've cared that much, but they seem to be going into the direction of making it more wordy and thus causes me to change perspective a bit when tackling the games. So my expectations have shifted slightly and it makes me more hungry for lore. Plus with the release of Ys VI & VII on the PC within the last few years, I somewhat recently replayed them. Celceta should be soon too, which I'll likely replay as well.

Well, Just received my Dissidia Steelbook today and............

I got hit with the Lighting case :wall:

Any regular member on here received any of the other cases (Squall or Cloud) and willing to trade for a Lightning case?

PM me if interested in a trade (I traded and sold here on CAG before), otherwise ill just leave the slipcover on :oldman:.

Back to MHW.
Lightning is actually the one I would want. I plan to skip the game, probably. If that changes due to a sale (that is somehow still the steelbook edition) I'd be willing to if I get something else. So don't count on it, but in the unlikely scenario you get a message like 10 months from now that'll be why. :p

Also have to lol at everyone who bought Knack during that recent $5 or under flash sale. You all sacrificed for this though you knew it was going to be PS+ someday. I too have Grand Kingdom PS4 somewhere. I too played the Grand Kingdom demo only lol.

God damn it I have Grand Kingdom physical, still sealed :(
If you wait long enough most digital games will get to $5 so I don't see the big deal of it being free for a month. I got the launch edition for $22 (still sealed) but it will be nice to get the Vita copy since I don't have my consoles at the moment.

So I started actually playing monster Hunter, and I gotta say I'm not too much of a fan.

Also for those curious about my steelbook, an online chat rep told me to go to the store for an exchange. Then a Twitter rep told me to go to a store for an exchange. I called him all idiot. Next day another rep gave me a $10 credit.

Are you playing with other people? The online multiplayer is a drag to set up, but it's mostly the same as I remembered in terms of gameplay.

I'm pretty much playing everyday and I usually see Draekon on as well if you want to join (no TBRW allowed).

I spoke with a customer service (elite) about the steelbook and she felt bad enough to offer $20 refund.

Are you being sarcastic? Is that even a rhetorical question? Is your post making sense?

The answer myself is yes, yes I do, lol. Though I wonder...do you?

It’s too bad you aren’t enjoying it. I’m not far at all myself but I’m having a blast. The simplicity of it is fantastic in my opinion but I’m sorry it’s not living up to expectations for you.

Thank you, now I need more cags to join in the circle of misery.
If it makes you feel better, I bought the LE at launch, had it preordered from the Amazon double discount glitch. Still had to pay a whooping $54 or so for it though. I did open it and check out the contents when I first got it, and remember the art book being super neat.

Something that I find helps, is that I try to comfort myself by saying, if I hadn't bought it earlier, I would probably have been contemplating all that time whether or not I should buy it, and waste time looking for deals for that game. Since I bought it early on, I didn't have to waste time thinking about when to buy it, or whether the price was cheap enough, or worry it would sell out.

Of course this is all bullshit, as I bought a super rare autographed Kairi Hojo photobook for $100, only to see another person list the same item at $50 a week later. But I lie to myself so I can sleep at night...

No regrets for buying it for $20. Of course, it sits in the Backlog of doom

After beating Persona 5 and Nier Automata back to back, there is void in my life.

I might just start up Tekken 7.

You mind PM'ing me a list of what you have? I've been picking up every OST as well, including the Arranged and Unreleased, and just wondering if I missed anything.

I love the way the multiplayer works in MHW since I really don't want to be bothered with being in a party for a long play session. I can send up an SOS flare for help or join somebody else's quest then be done with them immediately afterwards.

How does Play-Asia charge for preorders? Do they do it like Amazon, and charge when they ship? Or do they do it like NISA, where they authorize the amount, release the funds, then charge when the product ships? Or is it like Rice Digital, where they'll just charge you when you submit the order?

Also, are there any active coupons for Play-Asia?

I tried playing online tonight and saying it's a drag is an understatement. I can't figure it out, it feels like I'm missing something. The terminology the game uses in the menu is also confusing. If somebody could explain it to me, the menus, whether in text or link to a video I would GREATLY appreciate it. Also, I accidentally discovered the area where the 16-player thing is but it didn't make any sense. All I ended up doing was the same old quests I would do at the quest board. And when I returned from the mission it took me back to the main area, the the 16-player area.

And the community is awful. I was playing with people and most of the time these guys don't do anything but walk around and do nothing - not hunting monster or even gathering. And when you engage an enemy they never come to you to assist.

I didn't buy Monster Hunter, but I was watching a friend play and we witnessed the same exact thing. It was baffling. I'm not a huge Destiny fan, but at least when I played Destiny 2 the online community was incredibly helpful.

I actually haven't had this issue yet out of the 15 or so sessions I've had with random people. Everybody always went to for the target. Although I had an SOS up while on an expedition with a friend and a third person joined who followed us around killing everything. I generally avoid helping people on expeditions unless I know them though.

There's pretty much no point in doing anything outside of the target. If you need non-target loot, then they should just do a solo expedition. However I assume this is mostly newer players either not caring or not understanding. Although spreading out to find the target initially is fine.

Destiny though, there isn't much point in doing anything but finishing the dungeon or whatever other activity you're grouped for. The rewards outside of it usually are absolutely terrible.

Random people will always be greedy and selfish unfortunately.

For PayPal they charge when you order. I'm not sure about other forms.

You can usually use the codes 'GEMATSU' or 'CENSORED' for $3 off, though I'm not sure if they'll work for pre-orders.

I've done quite a few quests with randoms and haven't had any problems. Everybody goes for the target monster and I haven't had anybody else fail the quest by carting too much. I did cause a quest failure myself once due to underestimating an Anjanath but at least I had started the quest. Maybe it's because I seem to be playing with more Japanese players due to the times I'm online.
