Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

I forgot what the reasoning behind digital deals not being able to consistently compete with physical was, but it actually made sense when I read it.
One of many reasons is Sony and MS need brick and mortar stores to stock and sell their hardware. There is little to no profit in the console itself, the money is in the software and accessories. MS and Sony don't want to compete with the B&M or they'll stop selling the console. MS is seeing some backlash from putting their 1st party games on GP. IT's actually the people that buy physical copies and trade used games that keep digital prices high. They think they're saving money, they're not, they're all costing us billions. Get rid of the middle man and we'll probably see a service like Steam. I think that's where MS is headed.

Anyone asked to sign into their Xbox today?  Always makes me nervous when it asks for my password. I would freak out if I lost my $320 in Xbox money

That reminds me...my friend's xbox live ban was reversed. The ban was because he was using a new gold subscription he bought from a private sale on gameflip. MS received a chargeback on the original purchase, which means it was likely bought with a stolen CC.

The lesson is to never buy cards/codes from unauthorized resellers.

For anyone who has Rocket League, I have a weird/silly question.

I just bought the disc version w/ DLC (I know it’s not everything that’s currently out) from Best Buy. I was actually hoping for a digital sale soon because the plan is to buy digital, use the DLC code, and then trade the disc in for nearly the same $11 that the digital is on sale for now. What I’m wondering is, is the DLC that comes with the disc game worth that extra $5 or so? Or should I just save the $5 and return the unopened disc copy and buy the $11 digital and call it a day?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Also, for my own two cents - I bought Refunct for the same $1.50 a few weeks back, and it’s actually a fun little title with some easy (and two or three not so easy) achievements. Definitely worth it if the 1st person platform gameplay suits you.

Definitely getting the EA Family Bundle. The way I see it is: Buy Unravel and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 for $16, get Need for Speed free.

Considering:

The Solus Project

Battleborn

Conga Master

Honestly I don't think most people who actively play the game use most of the DLC (which is all cars). The cars are cool but most people stick with the Octane/Dominus anyways. The base XBOX version came with those cars on release.

I remember seeing Conga Master in the past. Looks like stupid fun if anyone has experience with that one?

Otherwise, might be in for Super Hydorah. TA says it's a shmup, but need to see if it's an actual shmup or a twin stick shooter.
It's a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up, essentially a tribute to Gradius.

The dlc cars are cool but you can't put hats on them so they aren't worth it.

Firewatch is $8, the lowest it’s been. How is it?
It's a walking simulator, but it's a good one. It took me about 3-4 hours to finish it and get all the achievements. It's very memorable with great characters, but unlikely you'll ever go back to it once you finish it. Take that as you will.

Just going to pick up Conviction again. Hopefully I can find some to complete the co-op campaign with.

Was considering Injustice 2 for $20, but going to wait for the new Soul Calibur to release.

2K's stubbornness on Bioshock, Borderlands, and X-Com never being a penny below $19.80 is getting to be pretty comical. I have bought all three for that price at different times over the years so if anything I don't feel ripped off but I swear all three have been that price around what feels like 50 times now.
Even worse to me is Battleborn. Game was a flop but they still try to get $7.50 for it. Should go free to play. Isn't it that on PC? I bought it for like $5 and ended up trading it. Is anyone even playing it online now? I wanted to like it but the beta was such a turn off for me.

Well think about it. If you have a digital price that's consistently lower price than B&M stores people wouldn't go to B&M stores lol. That is basically getting a loophole with Game Pass though, and it's a subscription service.
I wonder if video game consoles have moved to a place where who really needs to see them in the flesh? I pre ordered my PS4 OG the day it was announced. I never saw one till it was delivered on launch day. Do people really go into Best Buy and look at the XBox One S, X, PS4 and PS4 pro and make their decision on which one they think looks better? Or do they buy the most powerful (the X) or whatever their friends have or whatever has the games they want to play?

I used to love wandering around Best Buy on my lunch hour. Now I rather do store pickup or online.

And now with game pass as you said... Order your XBox One online via Amazon, BB, MS whatever. Get it in a couple days. Sign up for game pass and gold and start downloading. More and more Best buy near my job seems to have less and less physical games anyway. Sort of reminds me of when CDs started to lose shelf space. The one near my house still has a decent selection of physical games.

I need to go back and clean up a few of the achievements still. I thought it was pretty well done.

Should I go with ghost recon wild lands or watch dogs 2? I want an open world game. Would go for steep because the Olympics has me all hyped but I'm still hoping that makes it to switch.

Game Pass is still showing for $5. I can't resist extending it through the end of the year, especially with first party titles. They've added 8-10 games each month, and lots of indie games on there I've never heard of that have reviewed really well - games I want to play but wouldn't spend $10 on per game.

Also, I only have 3 months left in school and then hopefully will have a well-paying job, so the end of ultra-frugality is in sight.
I tried numerous times over the last week or two to try and get it for $5, to no avail. I was subscribed when I started, and let it lapse since. Still no offer. Ugh.

I literally bought Refunct like an hour before it went on sale
Try to get a refund. They have the digital return policy thing now where if you haven’t played the game for too long you can get your money back, so I would imagine they would honor a price drop, just have to get a good CSR.

I know Shipwreck, CheapyD, and Wombat love wildlands, they talk it up on the podcast. I haven't played either one.

So I’m stupid, how do you turn off auto renew for gamepass?
I did it from account.microsoft.com

The header has a label/tab called Services & Subscriptions. Click on that. Should be able to see gamepass in there and there's radio button switch that turns it on/off.

Hope that helps.

Dang @ Battleborn's price. I'm playing Agents of Mayhem now, and lo and behold, it's actually pretty good. So anything's possible.
I have been playing for the last month and I really like it. It is shallow in places but the number of different heroes makes the gameplay fresh. (That would be Agents of Mayhem...not Battleborn)

Do you know anyone that plays Wildlands? I played half solo/half with squad and had a blast either way. Part of my squad plays multiplayer occasionally now. Played some rounds multiplayer and had some fun.

Havent played it in a while so not sure of the changes

Are you playing wild lands alone or with friends? I played on PS4 with some friends and the game is enjoyable with a group. However you can play alone with the help of the 3 AI members you control in your squad. Currently playing Watch Dogs 2 but it isn’t as much fun as Wild Lands.

Edit: Haven’t touch Wild Lands since they updated it with the 4v4 multiplayer.

As a former BB employee I can say it varies but largey yeah I believe people go in and grab the console their friends are playing. I agree though, I believe consoles are sold online more nowadays - also TVs too as well.
The funny thing is though BB wants to do away with CDs and said they were not going to have them in store this summer. A bunch of people aren't happy on that and yeah I know a few folks that will always buy CDs lol.

Agree with this review of FIrewatch. I'd never played a "walking simulator" before so maybe that affected my take. But I found it to be a really engaging four hours of gameplay, great voice acting and nicely stylized graphics. I'd definitely recommend at $8. True that I wouldn't go back and replay it (you could if you really wanted to, and from what I've read making different choices in the conversations can make the experience somewhat different, but I feel no draw to do it). And it's relatively short, but at this price it still feels like you're getting plenty for your money in terms of a gaming experience with strong production values.

Exactly. $8 for 3-4 hours of video game entertainment vs $10 to see a new movie for 2 hours of entertainment. There may be older games with more content hitting that price point that take longer to complete, but when compared to the prices of other entertainment mediums, it's not too far out there.

Or $7 for a McDonald's combo meal that takes 10 minutes to eat and an added 20 minutes in the restroom shortly thereafter. Maybe that one's just me.
