Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Personally I'm going to skip the PS Classic unless I find one cheap down the line. The lack of analogue sticks is a clear attempt at cutting costs which limits what games they can actually put on it. I feel like they should have doubled the storage so they could do 30-40 games, include a decent amount of RPGs, and possibly have more than one game from some big series like Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, or Final Fantasy.

The fact that they only announced 5 of the games is a red flag for me, I wouldn't be surprised if these are all the heavy hitters they have, which out of the first 5 is really just FF VII and Tekken 3. The main issue with doing a PS Classic is sort of the same problem PlayStation All-Stars had, in the past Sony didn't own the majority of the franchises that their system is famous for. They can still announce games like Twisted Metal and Parappa, but to really do the library justice they need at least a Tomb Raider from Square-Enix, and to get Konami (Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania SOTN), and Capcom (Resident Evil 1 or 2).
It really does seem odd that they would only announce 5 of the 20 games. Is it a poor attempt to build hype off the mystery of what the other 15 could be? It would be a far better value if they would include at least 30 games and had sticks on the controllers, even if it came at the cost of only including one controller with the console. I don't see why I would need this over getting some original playstation games off PSN and playing them on my vita or picking up a cheap ps3 if I wanted them on my tv.

Playing old school PS1 Tomb Raider sounds good on paper, but holy shit that is definition of games that have not aged well at all. Graphics, control, gameplay, platforming; everything is just bad. In my nerdiest of nerd hearts, I want Sony and Square to just shock me and say "one of the 20 games...EINHANDER!!!!"

Also the realization that I'm going to Japan next year and can probably find a PSTV for cheap there kinda puts into question of how much I really need this thing even for cheap.

Yeah. I'd much rather have a PSTV with better storage options (128GB MicroSD is less than $20 these days), the ability to buy/download games, and PSP / Vita support. Shame they discontinued it.

Xbox support got back to me about the quests and asked for screenshots as if a screenshot of the check mark not being there helps them lol.

I have a PSTV and it’s a pretty nice system. Think I paid $40 for it new when they were clearanced. Actually need to hook it back up. Have too many damn inputs.

Just as I figured, a scripted response from MS support.

Hi,

This is (Name) of Microsoft rewards. We gather that you are concern about the bonus points from one of our promotional offer. We understand how this can be important to you. And where you are coming from and that you feel upset and frustrated. We would like to inform you that the punch will be added to the punch card after you've log in on 10 different days and it may take up to 48 hours to see the punch due to delay in data which is being worked on by our Engineering Team . We are closely monitoring this matter. We'll provide you with updates as they become available.

Thank you for your participation in Microsoft Rewards.

Sincerely,

(Name)

I can't even claim the damn reward. I have three out of four objectives completed, but when I click on the one that says "claim the reward from your Xbox app", it just re-routes me right back to the page I was just on. I sent a support ticket to MS, hopefully someone can help me out.

Speaking of reward delays, I finished a Gamepass Quest for the first time (this month’s MCC quest). When do those normally deposit the reward? Next month?

no PS1 game has aged well

How many points are you guys even getting for the rewards quest you are doing? Spending all this time with all the problems to get like $1 doesn’t seem worth it to me.

the Resident Evil games are my favorite of all time, but does anybody really miss tank controls or that voice acting? they've aged like a banana

never liked the other games

Symphony of the Night is the only PS1 game that still holds up in its original form.

Final Fantasy Tactics needs better controls, otherwise I’d says that’s on the list too.

most ps1 games do not hold up, listing resident evil as an example of what does is kind of hilarious, those original games are awful to try to go back to

Meh. The controls take some getting used to but I think those games are still perfectly playable after about 20 minutes. The DS port od RE1 is great. Besides, those are only three games in a list of over 10 off the top of my head.

Compared to the hundreds of games released on PS1, a minority hold up, thats true, but I can think of a top 20 worth putting on the Classic.

Yeah, there are a lot of PS1 games that hold up well at this point. The Crash and Spyro trilogies, Einhander, Ridge Racer games, Tony Hawk 1 & 2, Ape Escape, Tomba games, and others.

I just sat through a Wikipedia list of all PS1 games, and was reminded fondly of some great games I used to own that I would absolutely go back to today.  Digimon World 1-3, Simpsons Wrestling (as broken as it was), Wipeout, the classic Spiderman games, hell even Space Jam was great.  But reading this list makes me really wonder what the other 15 games for the PS Classic are going to be.  While the pool may be relatively large, to choose 15 more games that are recognizable is going to be tricky.

To add on to Playstation Day, they are now letting you download PS4 and PS2 games directly to your console instead of just streaming with the PSnow service. Since I recently picked one up this summer for God of War and Spiderman this makes it much more of an intriguing offer.

edit: I guess PS3 is the bulk of the offerings and that's still streaming only, so a half step in the right direction

Do I remember you liking metal/punk/hardcore correctly? If so, armageddon in Harvard square is good if you like vinyl.

Replayd was my go to for used games while in college but haven't lived over there in years. They usually have a decent selection when I see them at pax. It's a bit out of the way from the main tourist areas if that's what you're doing, wouldn't go all the way there unless you're going to a show or something nearby.

I haven't been yet but hear good things about A4cade in cambridge. It's a barcade type place.

Yeah, I'm seeing if someone will post a list of what can be downloaded first before I possibly commit to that. Though my ridiculous backlog is indeed ridiculous, I might as well just let it swarm over me and drown me with this.

I don’t get why they aren’t including PS3 games for downloading. I guess probably because that would confirm that the PS4 was actually capable of playing PS3 games on its own.

I'd be slightly interested in the PS1 Classic if the Mortal Kombat games of the time (MK3, MK4, MKT and Mythologies) were included. Back then, late 90's early 2000's, fighting games (specifically Mortal Kombat) was the only reason I actually liked video games. So my interest in Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and the likes was as good as non-existent at the time.

But still, not paying for an overpriced, glorified and nostalgia-wrapped ROM box  :speaktothehand:

or confirms that it really can't, was a weird architecture so it's entirely feasible to me it just can't be done with a high quality like the emulation containers MS is using on Xbox One where there are actual improvements

Seeing as how I originally got a Playstation over an N64 because it didn't depend on analog, I have no problem seeing the original controllers on the Playstation Classic.  If I had the choice between analog sitck and d-pad, it's the d-pad every time.

However, I'm not too excited about the Playstation Classic since I can play any of these games on my PSP, Vita, and PS3.

But I would change my mind if they truly followed Nintendo's idea and added a game(s) that is not available on PSN. I bet Sony gets a lot of requests for BC games and this would be a good time to add something. Here's my idea:

The original, non-director's cut of Resident Evil 1.  Doesn't have analog support and has better music, Maybe they can get the Japanese version that didn't edit any of the gory cutscenes.

And if you're going to add Resident Evil to games that still hold up well, you should also add Dino Crisis.

It's about 220 PS4 and PS2 games on the service. I'm not sure what's not downloadable, but that's more than Game Pass.

I've played Mortal Kombat 4 and MK Mythologies Sub-Zero a few months ago and they're pretty bad. Never heard or met a person that liked Mythologies Sub Zero. That game is atrocious.....on game nights, the first person to get drunk will usually request to play that horrid game. Inevitably, the next person up will choose war gods followed by Clayfighter 63 1/3. Finally, we'll put on Buck Bumble so we can all listen to that stupid intro song while we make ourselves another drink.

I don’t get why they aren’t including PS3 games for downloading. I guess probably because that would confirm that the PS4 was actually capable of playing PS3 games on its own.
The PS3 games on PS Now run on PS3s with the feed being streamed to you, so they can't exactly make them downloadable without creating the emulation to support local play on a PS4.

Oh I agree, the game IS terrible (though not AS terrible as MK Special Forces), I listed because it came out shortly before MK4 and..... maybe because I couldn't list MK Gold as that one was Dreamcast-exclusive.

just buy the arcade collection if you still have a 360

Trilogy was the first Playstation game I bought back in 96, that was the first time I ever experienced loading times, the load times for that game made me want to take it back as Mortal Kombat games didn't have load times before

hated Mythologies

I remember it could take like 30 seconds for any Shang Tsung transformation. Now, if MK9 was BC....... (Boon said it was going to be BC right after BC was announced at E3 2015 but still nothing after nearly 3 years).

Ah okay, gotcha. Never played MK Special Forces or MK Gold. Though MK Gold is an updated version of MK4, I still wanna try it out to see what the extra characters feel like. Someday.....

The only bad thing about the arcade collection is it's based on the actual Arcade versions(as the game title implies duh). But those ones are incredibly harder than the console versions. Took me over an hour to beat Shao Kahn in those games back in 2011

Yeap, beating MK2 as player 1 was very difficult with most characters in the arcade version. As player 2 on the other side, is much easier up until you reach Kintaro.

Since Pat is still out this week, I'll fill in for the weekly free game drawing. The prize this week will be Marble Void. Like this post and I'll pick a winner by Sunday noon (PST) or later if I forget.

Gamers chasing rewards, quests, and livestreams. I got better games to play than that BS.

With achievements, you're at least playing the damn game.
