Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Re-releasing old hardware has nothing to do with backwards compatibility, so I'm not sure why you said that.

Microsoft is also doing a per-game thing for it's backwards compatibility rather than releasing a general emulator and saying to have at it, so I'm assuming there's some deal being made with each game publisher on a per-game basis rather than that every game requires significant individual work to get running on XB1, which seems unlikely considering they all targeted the same hardware.
I'm well aware of what Microsoft is doing.

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

I for one hope next consoles have full backwards compatible I mean if i'm being honest it's mostly the reason I play my xbox one since I can play last gen games I never got to try out.

Reposting.
The digital store is MASSIVE now compared to when only select games were released digitally in the 360/PS3 days. Being able to continue selling the entire PS4 catalog going forward into future hardware generations is a decent potential source of revenue.

If you have a Japanese Apple account, you should be able to switch over to that store and download it whenever it becomes available.
Thanks. So it turned out to be pretty easy to switch my IPhone's App store to the Japan region. I didn't actually create a new account, I just changed the region on mine. I had to google a random "billing address" from somewhere in Japan, but can just select "none" for the payment option. I don't generally buy apps, so I can stay that way for a few days and then switch back after it comes out. I'll probably have to switch back when they inevitably push updates I bet though.

I also google translated my way through the formal website to locate the pre-reg by email option. You'll end up here: https://cloud.mail.forwardworks.com/wamm_mailregi just pop your e-mail in the two boxes, check the "I Agree" box and submit. Just in case anyone else is interested.

Not sure if it's really that simple, though. How does the licensing stuff work for backwards compatibility? I'm sure the digital PS2 games on PS3 and PS4 have deals with those game publishers/developers, but outside of that does Sony get in trouble if they provide a generic emulator that plays any PS1/PS2 game? The early PS3s had PS2 hardware built in to allow backwards compatibility, so I've assumed that got around that kind of issue due to something in the legal language, but since they cut out hardware support for backwards compatibility there hasn't been a Sony system that did it across the board even when the emulator is technically capable of it. PSP and PS1 is the same way--even games digitally listed on PSN are not all available for the Vita, in some cases there are even differences by region in what's available.
If the PS3 is any example, they don't need any special license as all PS3s could play PS1 game discs and it was just through software emulation.

Unlike 3rd parties, sony should be able to make any emulation software of their own hardware without issue. Unless a game had a special contract that only allowed it to be played on specific hardware, there shouldn't be an issue (I don't know why sony would agree to something like that after all).

Re-selling it is when there could be issues. I imagine that is where most of the PSP/PS1 issues on vita come up (that's why they're not listed on the Vita store, but you can get around that by using a PS3 for many games). As well as not all games were listed as supported officially by Sony, so they wouldn't want people buying a game and then it crashes on the Vita and complaining.

Yay! Why is it that every time I pick up a game series they remake it a few days later.
If it makes you feel any better, this is pretty clearly just a port of the iOS version with some minor QoL improvements (save slots) and the original Japanese (which is admittedly interesting, even if I like the localized version).

Well, since Ace Attorney seems to be the topic at hand, I'll throw a little side topic in to the mix. The fan translation of The Great Ace Attorney just got the translation for episode 3 + 4 today, so now there is only one left. I'm not sure if a link to their site is OK here, but it's easily searched and found, and there latest update notes are a good read.

Since the game takes place between Japan and the UK, they are using actual "UK English" to make the translation all that more authentic. Fan translations are the best, as they often do so much more than the actual developers ever do, if we ever get a game translated in the first place.

Weekly VN news:

Very little honestly. Main thing is VenusBlood FRONTIER Kickstarter. This is a strategy eroge game kind of like Tears to Tiara. The goal is really high IMHO and needs a lot of help. It has about 27 days to go. Honestly not my type of game or story, since I believe it is filled with tentacles and some other not so nice things. I will help if it's desperately needed.

Also Baldr Force was suprise released fan translated last week by Steppenwolf. It is the all ages version, and I recommend running it in 640x480 compatibility mode in Windows 10 as it is pretty old.

Surprise VN News, the only reason I still use 4chan.

But I think I'll hold off to see if some enterprising fellow finds a way to crowbar the translation into the 18+ version.

My Asian Copy of SNK Heroines (PS4) arrived today from Play-Asia. Didn’t expect this to be included. Nice.

Its a port of the IOS to 3DS version which I just bought last month. :whistle2:(

Valkyria Chronicles 4 this week. I'm a bit interested in Timespinner and Alwa's Awakening isn't half bad either. If you're interested in Visual Novels, there are a couple that may catch your interest as well. I recommend checking out the Golf Story physical release for Switch. The game is pretty cool.

Other stuff that released without warning last week or I overlooked it (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- Witch Thief (Action / Bullet Hell)
- Main Character Simulator (Visual Novel / Smut)

I think the new Jake Hunter 3DS game may have been delayed.  I know my Best Buy preorder got pushed back to 10/9 I believe.

Also, Punch Line seems to have been delayed at most (but not all) retailers until the first or second week of October.

October 30 for Punch Line (Vita) at Amazon. Seems like LRG really clogged the production pipeline.

Glad vita is done at least all the companies can stop milking crappy games.

I love the Vita, but the last year or two have had an abundance of questionable releases. It's been a good lesson on why I don't collect more.

Na they will just move the farm to NintendoLand.
They've already started, every half-baked PS4/Vita release from the past few years seems like it's getting a port.

Does finishing the game unlock DQ1 like in the Japanese release?
