Details on the M2 SSD stuff that is coming in the FW that is currently in beta.

Reqs:

Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD

Capacity: 250GB – 4TB

Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format. There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built in.

Sequential read speed: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended

Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported)

Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.

These numbers can be found on retail listings for M.2 SSD devices. The first two digits refer to the width, the remaining digits to the length.

Socket type: Socket 3 (Key M)

Total size including cooling structure:
In millimeters: smaller than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H).
In inches: smaller than 4.33in (L) x 0.984 in (W) x 0.442in (H).

See below for full requirements.

Length
The following M.2 SSD lengths are compatible with PS5 consoles:
30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm (corresponding to the form factor type, per above).

Width
A 22mm-wide M.2 SSD module is required.
The total structure (including an added cooling structure) cannot exceed 25mm (0.984in).

Height
The total height of the M.2 SSD and its cooling structure (such as a heatsink) – whether built-in or separate – must be less than 11.25mm (0.442in).

The height must also be in the right place, in relation to the M.2 SSD’s circuit board:

The size below the board must be less than 2.45mm (0.096in). The total size above the board must be less than 8mm (0.314in).
(Note: millimeter measurements are the technical standard and are more precise than inches. We recommend double-checking that the total dimensions of M.2 SSD and heatsink products you’re considering meet the millimeter requirements before purchasing)

M.2 SSD with a built in heatsink dimensions
M.2 SSD with a single heatsink
M.2 SSD with double heatsinks
Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSD devices are supported.
M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.

You should carefully review drive specifications prior to purchase and contact the vendor or manufacturer if you need further information. SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products.

Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.

The majority of M.2 SSD devices with the above type numbers (M Key Type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110) and without a built-in cooling structure will fit the PS5 console’s SSD slot. However, sizes for cooling structures (like heatsinks) vary greatly. If you are not sure an M.2 SSD or cooling structure (such as a heatsink) you’re considering meets the size requirements outlined here, we recommend looking for another product option or contacting the vendor or manufacturer for more information.

Was hoping the PS5 would treat the expansion as an addition to the main capacity rather than a second drive. But if some games may not perform as well even on higher rated drives, surely it will do it like the Xbox and show it as a separate drive which sucks.

I think that could have been tricky to pull off at an OS level. Still happy to know that we'll have some expansion drive options coming soon.

Not sure who all got the "We want to say thank you" email with the 10% off discount code for the Playstation Direct store for games/accessories but as a reminder it expires tonight at midnight.  I ended up getting the black Dual Sense (already have the red) and a charge base.  The code works on the whole order of everything that qualifies, not a single item.

Waiting for Crucial to release their options for drives.  Had a Crucial SSD in my Pro and that shit was butter.  Probably the best drive I have ever owned, and I have owned all brands lol

It will as more get out there, but these are pretty much the top of the line cards to get the performance you want that will require a premium for the time being.

Someone in this thread from the OC area was looking for a Buzz PS3 Bundle for Cheap. Here is your chance to get it for $11. Saw one in the glass window this evening at Bookoff Lakewood Mall for $11.

Horizon forbidden west postponed til 2022
I'm glad it was... honestly the game just didn't look all that impressive. The first Horizon is prob a top 5 game from the last gen for me and while HFW looks good, something about the animations just screamed last gen. I get why they're making it cross gen, but really wish they would have just made it as a PS5 exclusive.

Plus, I don't have a PS5 anyway so maybe now I can find one before the game's released.

I have 19 more invites to the new beta firmware for PS4, version 9.0. Here's some of the bullet points:

Main features updated in this System Software Beta Program version

• You can now view trophies for PS5 games on PS4
• In Messages, if you're the owner of a group, you can now delete it. Open the options menu, and then select [Delete Group]. If you delete a group, it will be deleted for all members.
• Now when you block someone, you can choose to also leave the group that only you and they are in at the same time. You won't leave groups that include other players.

Other update features
• When a child requests to use communication features for a game, their parent or guardian will receive a notification on the PS4 and PlayStation App.
Please note: before you start, we strongly recommend that you back up your important data before downloading the beta software.
If you want a code let me know.

I’m guessing forbidden west will release in February or March
Considering that the original released in late February, that’s probably a pretty good guess. That said, it would be funny if BOTW2 rolled out within weeks of it too, considering that’s what happened with HZD in 2017. BOTW came out a few weeks later and basically stole its thunder. Nintendo doing that again—with the same franchise against franchise—would be some god-tier trolling.

Yeah Horizon definitely had it's thunder stolen I never hear people talk about it constantly almost every day about how much they love it 4 years after it came out. Such an underrated gem.

That was me. Why didn't you buy it? I'm 22 miles from the Lakewood mall. 44 miles round trip seems like a lot. I will call tomorrow and see if they can hold it for me and then decide if it's worth the drive.

I have a stupid question. Ghost of Tsushima can no longer be bought for the PS4 on Sony's digital store? It is gone from my wish list and when I search for it all that shows up is pre-order for the DIrectors Cut. Am I missing something or did Sony really pull the original version from their digital store?

Pretty sure the Director’s Cut supersedes the original. It’s basically like releasing a GOTY edition and then only selling that digitally. You can still find plenty of physical copies of the original, assuming you aren’t going to be using the disc-less PS5 in the future. The upgrade scheme for that game is ridiculous though, basically forcing a $30 upgrade from a standard PS4 version to the PS5 director’s cut.

This is insane! I cannot buy it digitally until the DC is out? And then I have to pay full price and wait for THAT to go on sale? Sony, Sony, Sony...

This isn't a new thing; a great many games have been delisted once they've been superseded by other versions. The last one I remember was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age being removed and replaced with the supposedly inferior definitive edition. However, there's a full list of delistings here if you wish to seek out the other games removed when never versions came out.

I mean, that's part of digital, really. They can pull or change the content if they want to, it's in the ToS and should be expected when a newer version is released. You're going to have to buy physical if you want that much control over your product or just accept that they have the right to delist or change digital games if they want to.

GoT DC hhas the PS4 base version included. If you buy it now, you can play the vanilla game until the expansion comes out

I don’t get it. How does his & hers SSD help anything? You still have to fight over the PS5 for playtime. Plus, unless they have completely different tastes in games...

Plus installing the SSD is not as trivial as it is on the Series S|X. It's not just a plug and play thing.

(He says as a primary ps5 user with a series S for gamepass)

I called up right now and asked the guy to open up the box to make sure it had the dongle. It did not unfortunately. That's the 4th time the dongle was missing in my attempt to get the bundle. I've learned to call and make sure everything is there before making the drive. Thanks for looking out though.

I'm sure you know, there are people selling Buzz PS3 with dongles on ebay, if you trust that route.

Some are auctions, some are buy it now.

I guess the value depends on how much you want to get it.
