What Shows Should I Watch on HBO GO?

Posted by tylerh1701, 06 November 2013 · 8,022 views

So a couple months ago Comcast hooked me up with a Cable and Internet package for $50/month for 6 months. I later found out that my "cable" package was basically just all the channels I get with my antenna, so that was a complete bust. But still, internet alone for $50/month is not a bad deal. I was also informed I get HBO free for 6 months, and it also means I have access to HBO Go for 6 months as well.

Well I just checked out HBO Go a few weeks ago and turns out it is extremely awesome! As far as I can tell, every episode of every original show they have is on there, as well as a ton of movies. So now that begs the question, what is worth watching?

I enjoy watching TV, but I also enjoy gaming and other stuff too so I don't want to spend every day of the next 4 months grinding through everything HBO offers. So I'm trying to decide what is "must-watch" and what I can pass on. Here's everything I'm considering and everything I've already seen:

Already Seen:

The Sopranos
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
Flight of the Conchords

Considering:

Band of Brothers
Big Love
Boardwalk Empire
Bored to Death
Deadwood
Eastbound & Down
Family Tree
Game of Thrones
Luck
The Newsroom
Oz
Six Feet Under
Veep
The Wire

Obviously I've got a few personal preferences in there that I'd really like to check out, but I'm interested to see if anyone else has any recommendations for me. Also let me know if I'm not considering something that you think is great.

hello ladies

ricky gervais show

Game of Thrones and The Wire would be number 2 and 3 if I was making a top 10 list of the best shows ever made.  You gotta watch them.  Deadwood, Eastbound and Down, and Oz are also really good shows.  Veep is funny sometimes but overall not the greatest show, the same goes for Bored to Death.  I hated Boardwalk Empire, I watched the entire first season just waiting for something to get me interested in it but I just found it boring as hell.  I've never had any interest in the rest of the shows on the list so I've never watched them.

As far as other HBO shows I'd recommend thinking about that are not on your list.  Ricky Gervais Show, True Blood, Life's Too Short, and Entourage.

Thanks, I'll look into both of them a little more.  I've never been the biggest Ricky Gervais fan, but I'll give it a shot.

Thanks.  The Wire and Game of Thrones are the top 2 on my "to watch" list.  Sad to hear you haven't enjoyed Boardwalk Empire, I really want it to be good.

I'm curious as to what your #1 favorite show ever is?

#1. The Wire

#2. Boardwalk Empire

All the pieces matter.

does hbo go get the standup specials too?

I'm not sure, I haven't really checked anything but the Movies and TV Series sections.

Without a doubt, the number 1 series you should watch is "Band of Brothers".  Excellent war "movie" about the real life soldiers (Easy Company, 101st Airborne) who fought during World War 2.  It's 10 episodes each lasting about an hour.  I have watched it at least 5 times.

After that I would say "Game of Thrones".

Check out the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra which is really good.

Lost.  Although I hated the last season, everything before that was awesome.

def check out hello ladies, probably my fav new series

1. Game of thrones.

2. The Wire

3. Eastbound and Down   (Surprised no one mentioned this. One of the funniest shows on TV, if you like Danny McBride/ Baseball)

Dunno how far back it goes, but I'll always throw Carnivale in the ring when it comes to HBO shows.  Ye gods I loved that show beginning to end.

Carnivale is on there.  It looks really weird haha.

If Life's Too Short is on there, you absolutely have to watch it.

And Game of Thrones.

Bored to Death - 24ep
Deadwood - 36ep

Veep - 18ep+
The Newsroom - 19ep+

Game of Thrones - 30ep+
Boardwalk Empire - 45ep+

The Wire is the absolute best show I have ever watched. Hands down. Even if you don't like a few of the first episodes, give it time. Oh god, so good.

Boardwalk Empire is good shit as well. Very entertaining. Starts kind of slow, though.

Game of Thrones is awesome, too. Lots of boobs. Can't go wrong there.

Newsroom is GODDAMN TERRIBLE. And I'm a huge Sorkin fan.

I just finished Veep (because it's short and not a terrible thought provoking show) and either The Wire or Game of Thrones are next on my list.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just noticed the link in your sig.

I was all prepared to like breakfuss' post above until he called Newsroom terrible.  I really like that show.

To me the best show ever on all of television is The Wire.  The only downside is that it was started before HD really caught on and the creator of the show refused to switch to HD half way through the series.

Game of Thrones is awesome, but watching it now will likely just get you hooked.  If you are ok with pirating episodes later, watch it.  Otherwise, I would not get hooked into it.

Deadwood was awesome, but it just kind of ended with no real wrap-up because the creator decided to do that stupid John from Cincinnati thing.  That still pisses me off.

One that you haven't mentioned that I really enjoyed was Rome.  It is not terribly long, but it is really well done.

But Newsroom *is* bad.  What a disappointment.  Start with The Wire.  It really is probably the best show that's ever been made.  Everyone has their favorite season, and mine is season 4.  Oh man, you're going to love it.

GoT is awesome, but you really need to read the books.  They're even better.  But the casting and production are so good on the show - it's pretty much a must-see.

Deadwood is brilliant.  True Blood got silly.  I need to watch Boardwalk Empire and Oz.
