I know Ace Combat has a strong squadron of fans, but the franchise left me in a vapor trail long ago. For me, the series had become stale and full of never-ending dogfights and escort missions. I’d get a couple levels into each game and have no lasting desire to continue flying around in circles chasing down arrows on my HUD. But after seeing Assault Horizon at E3 this year, it was obvious that Ace Combat was trying to go in a new direction – a direction that looked to address many of the reasons I had abandoned series. Did the final product result in a sortie worth partaking in, or is it sort of the same old same old?

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions marked developer Beenox’s first go with the webslinger’s license, and quite frankly I thought they got a lot right with the game and had some good, novel ideas. The four different Spider-Mans had distinct gameplay mechanics (well, Ultimate and Amazing Spider-Man were pretty similar), and I loved the way the levels were all based upon classic Spidey villains. So, I wasn’t surprised when shortly thereafter Activision declared Beenox as the Spider-Man studio for future titles. Here we are a year later, and there’s already another Spider-Man game. Does Edge of Time continue spinning the web-head in the right direction?

Since their first appearance in the 1960’s, the X-Men have been all about tolerance and accepting those that are different. They have told us that just because someone is blue, has laser beam eyeballs, or is bald we should still accept them as people. The makers of X-Men Destiny may have had this in mind when they were making this game. I’m pretty sure that they were hoping the lessons of the comic book would translate to the videogame buyer who would then accept that this game is different. And by different, I mean unrefined, ugly, and short; all of which are awesome if you are Wolverine, but not if you are a videogame.
