When I first saw screenshots of Bastion, I knew nothing about this game. All I saw was another “Indie” arcade game with hand drawn graphics and a boy protagonist. I thought to myself, “Just what we need, another art game for the critics to fawn over; another 2-hour masterpiece of self-indulgent-games-are-art-before-fun to be spoon-fed into liking.” Then I learned that the game was an action RPG, and when it came down to either playing my Mt. Everest-sized backlog or buying something new, I figured what the hell. I needed something new to hate on, something where I could be the dissenting opinion and rile up the rank and file. Of course sometimes I am happily very wrong with my own preconceived notions.

Captain America is hitting the big screen this week and no movie based on a comic book would be complete without a game based upon the movie based on a comic book. To say these ventures have had a checkered past is putting it nicely, but I’m always hopeful each time an iconic character is given a game. When that character happens to beat people up with a shield, it just seems even more likely that this could break the trend of bad superhero movie games. Big Fish Games has made a name for themselves with release after release of titles from the popular Mystery Case Files series on the PC and Mac. After Nintendo published 2008’s MillionHeir on the DS, though, the series mysteriously disappeared from the portable and console world. The Malgrave Incident looks to crack that case by bringing an entirely original game to the Wii. The Malgrave Incident has you traveling to a decrepit island to investigate its curious dust and the eccentric inventor that lives there. The only thing left to solve is whether a Wiimote and your television are good tools for this type of gumshoeing.

After two years, Twisted Pixel has realized that it was not good that the ‘Splosion Man should be alone; thus, they have made a companion fit for him. I’m not sure if this process involved any ribs, but given ‘Splosion Man’s penchant for meat, if there were, they were probably barbecued. The main difference between ‘Splosion Man and Mrs. Splosion Man is that she is pink and she has a bow on her head. I know, get right out of town. Oh, and she doesn’t have an apostrophe in her name. Is that difference just as annoying to read as it is to type? Don’t let her cutesiness fool you though, this is one tough mama of a platformer that will have you questioning why you are screaming so loudly at your television.
