Wombat wrote this review, but he was a little preoccupied today, so I'm posting this for him.

The gaming series Red Faction is hard to pin down; it has been a first person shooter, an open-world sandbox game, and a downloadable combat racer. When Red Faction: Armageddon was first announced, I assumed it would follow in the steps of the well-received Red Faction: Guerrilla. An open-world follow up title seemed to be a given. What we get, however, is not open but rather a linear third-person shooter. A risky move considering how the wide open spaces of Mars reinvigorated a series most assumed had died with the last console generation. Did this gamble pay off? There was only one to for me to find out, so I got my ass to Mars.

Although I consider myself to be pretty well established as a nerd, I’ve never actually played the tabletop version of Dungeons & Dragons. There’s no good reason why, but all my experience with the series has been with videogames like Baldur’s Gate, Eye of the Beholder, and Demon Stone. So while I might not be able to tell you anything about the 4th Edition Rules Set, I do know that I’m a fan of repeatedly whacking goblins until something shiny pops out. Does Daggerdale fulfill those deep-rooted looting needs and capture the magic of this classic franchise?

The first half of 2011 has been loaded with first-person shooters. Between Crysis 2, Homefront, Killzone 3 and Conduit 2, I’ve shot countless foes in the head … and portions of the body less prone to sunshine. Thanks, Bulletstorm! Out of all these offerings, though, the one shooter I’ve been most curious about was Bethesda’s Brink. I first saw the game at E3 two years ago and it seemed to be trying something new; at the very least, it appeared to be combining a lot of ambitious imaginings. Brink touts highly customizable characters, free-running traversal, dynamically generated objectives, mid-battle swappable character classes, a blending of single player and multiplayer campaign progression, and an emphasis on working together with a team. While that’s certainly a cornucopia of buzz words and appealing ideas, was developer Splash Damage able to meld everything into a cohesive game?
