Theme: Science Fiction

Alien Arena is a free, stand-alone deathmatch game based on source code released by id Software. Begun by COR Entertainment in 2004, the game combines a 1950s-era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. Alien Arena focuses mainly on online multiplayer action, although it does contain single-player campaigns against bots.

Alien Arena has been released for Microsoft Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. The game has been free to play since its inception, and there are currently no plans to change it to a pay-to-play format. However, as of version 7.20, it features in-game advertising, in the main menu and in some maps. While the game's content is proprietary, the CRX engine is open source.

decent showings from the rpg, fps, and racing genre you have there. i submit to you Albatross18 for a sports game (i think its back to being called Pangya now) for a free Hot Shots golf style game complete with special shots. Give it a look if you haven't already.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PangYa

Also, while I'm not personally a fan, League of Legends is a free DotA styled game for something in the "kind of an RTS" genre.

Not a video game sports fan (I play the sports in RL though) but I will give it a shot.

I been doing volunteer work at a program for at risk and runaway children for many years. Besides homework I assist with the IT department that uses donated computers. Since there is little funding I have the honor of looking for free and legal games to install to entertain the children during down time...So I've been posting games like this on different forums where there has been PC gaming interest.

I will check out the game and pass it along to the kids and others :)

It's on my list. I have over 9456 games (last time I counted) that are free and installed. It's a very popular game at my children's center :) Some of them have even made tracks and mods for the game :)

His mother was not having that and almost got the belt on his ass when he started crying. LOL!

Tiny Wizard

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

In Tiny Wizard, your tower has been invaded and you must defeat waves of enemies, floor by floor. Your wizard's hat allows you shoot, the spacebar allows you cast a rechargeable, multi-directional 'uberspell' and bombs appear randomly, which can be collected and thrown when chosen.

The game starts out with promise. It has a nice graphical style and the controls feel smooth and responsive, however by level 15, I felt let down by the scarcity of new power-ups, enemies, terrain and the general lack of reward. - IndieGames.com

Action/Platformers
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Tiny Parallel Worlds is a minimalistic platformer with a few puzzles thrown in. The objective is to help the '3-pixel red dude' find his spoon.

The puzzles won't take much brain power to figure out. It plays like a fetch quest with some backtracking involved. Fortunately, the game is short enough for this not to become tiresome and I found it to be a delightful little time waster. - Indiegames.com

The Good Ship Higgs Boson

Action/Platformer/Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Changing gravity direction is the core mechanic in The Good Ship Higgs Boson. A couple of screens into the game and the text narrator buggers up the 'Higgs Boson generator', which sends your gravity out of whack. After promising to fix the problem and giving up, the ability to control the direction of gravity is given to you. You must use your newly acquired ability to navigate each room.

The Good Ship Higgs Boson isn't the most polished of its ilk, however its short length and thoughtful level design saves it from tedium. - IndieGames.com

Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2

Simulation/Mecha
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

This free Gundam clone offers surprisingly addicting gameplay and lets you indulge that fantasy you've always had ever since you saw your first Gundam anime.

3-D arenas pitting teams of mecha against each other makes the gameplay just like the Gundam Arcade game in Japan, which is similar to Armored Core and Virtual On, but you don't have to blow 100 yen each time you want to play.

Survival Mode: Fight until you drop.
Practice Mode: Go ahead, bully the defenseless computer!
Team Battle Mode: Ever wonder what it was like to pit one army of mecha against another?
Blitz Tactics Mode: One army versus another, but with giant warships too.
Online Contest Mode: Because destroying your friends is always more satisfying.
Custom Pilot Creation: We all love the default cat pilots, but the game also includes the option of using your own avatar pic and different voiced effects, even your own! Don't worry, the cats aren't offended. Base Installer includes custom Ryuusoul pilot (my ego knows no bounds).
