The Third Season of Sam & Max is coming to PSN:

Hello PlayStation friends! We’re Telltale, and we make awesome episodic adventure games! You may know of our work – Tales of Monkey Island, Strong Bad, and Wallace & Gromit are a few of our recent titles – but we’ve never launched a game on the illustrious PlayStation 3. Until now, that is! Coming in April, Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse hits the PlayStation Store, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring the third season of our landmark episodic series to you, the PlayStation Nation!

If you’re not familiar with the rabbit/dog detective duo, the following description ripped unceremoniously from the press release explains our heroes’ new unhinged adventure:

In Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, Max has been bestowed with a set of powerful psychic abilities from an unusual ancient source that he’ll wield against the strongest and strangest foes the Freelance Police have ever faced. Join gaming’s greatest dog and rabbit sleuths as they investigate the source of these powers, with manic Max exercising new and amazing abilities with each episode. Max’s shape shifting, teleportation, mind reading and future sight abilities prove particularly useful as intergalactic simians, eldritch gods, under-dwellers and an arcane scholar ruthlessly hunt down those powers for their own evil ends.

For the first time on the PlayStation Store, we’re teaming up with the fine folks at SCEA to offer Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse for pre-order beginning March 18. Customers who pre-purchase the five-episode comedy saga will pay $29.99 (discounted from $34.99) until the game launches on PSN. Not too bad!

We can’t wait for you to experience the first episode, The Penal Zone, next month! In the meantime, go ahead and take a peek inside the Devil’s Playhouse with the trailer below!

If you missed it, they mention being able to pre-order the full season for $29.99, compared to $34.99 after launch, which hasn't been done yet on PSN. It'll probably work the same as the Qore subscription works. They don't mention anything about the first two seasons coming to PSN though. It looks like the engine's gotten an upgrade since the first two seasons came out.

Edit: I just got a press release about this and it doesn't appear to actually be the third season, but a new series that's exclusive to PSN as far as consoles are concerned:

A psychically empowered lagomorph battling unusual and fearsome villains can mean only one thing: Freelance Police Sam & Max are coming for a new series of monthly episodic games. Telltale Games' Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse premiere episode The Penal Zone will release April 15th. This series will be Telltale's first for the PlayStation® Network, exclusively for the PlayStation®3 (PS3 TM) computer entertainment system. The games will also release on PC and Macintosh.

As Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse opens, Max has been bestowed with a set of powerful psychic abilities from an unusual ancient source that he'll wield against the strongest and strangest foes the Freelance Police have ever faced. Join gaming's greatest dog and rabbit sleuths as they investigate the source of these powers, with manic Max exercising new and amazing abilities with each episode. Max's shape shifting, teleportation, mind reading and future sight powers prove particularly useful as intergalactic simians, eldritch gods, under-dwellers and an arcane scholar ruthlessly hunt down these powers for their own evil ends. The teaser trailer released today at www.samandmaxgames.com/thedevilsplayhouse gives a peek at the skewed humor of The Devil's Playhouse. The very first in-game screenshots and new concept art are also posted at the site.

"Telltale continues to excel at channeling Sam & Max's extremely peculiar sensibilities," said Sam & Max creator, Steve Purcell. "For each subsequent season they somehow manage to toss ever more mind-addling scenarios at the Freelance Police. The creative team inhabits these characters so well that if I were their parents I'd be worried about them."

The PC pre-order for the series which begins today at www.samandmaxgames.com/thedevilsplayhouse includes a FREE game episode from the Telltale library along with exclusive membership in the Freelance Police "Elite Forces" -- all for just $34.95. Freelance Police Elite Forces members will gain access to a private forum for scheduled chats with Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell and Telltale designers along with first look posts about upcoming episodes before they release. Additionally, these customers will get special deals at the Telltale Store over the course of the season, as well as custom forum avatars and desktop wallpaper downloads. The pre-order for PlayStation users is expected to begin March 18th on the PlayStation Network.

"With Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse, we're bringing PlayStation fans five months of exciting episodic content and continuing our commitment to deliver exclusive, innovative gaming experiences to the PlayStation Network," said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The unhinged humor, unforgettable cast and irreverent undertone of this enduring franchise are aspects we expect will resonate with our audience, and both Telltale and SCEA can't wait to deliver."

Giant Bomb has a Quick Look EX to show, though I haven't watched it to see if it's the PC or PSN version that's being show.

Edit: It is the PSN version that they're showing off and they've made a huge redesign of the interface and the PSN version will offer direct control of Sam.

Cool. Does anyone know if you have to play the previous seasons to get the story or anything? I wish the older seasons came to PSN too.

Good to see the love spread to the PS3 finally, but I am surprised they are spurning other platforms they have used.
