So I'm in the market for a headset to use with my game systems, but I've run into a problem with how to tell a good headset from a bad one. I was originally going to get a Turtle Beach PX21 because it seems to be a popular choice, but what exactly makes it worth $60 compared to some cheaper options? Amazon has tons of headsets with 4+ stars that range from $20 to $200 and they all say those headsets are awesome, so there's really no way to tell if the more expensive ones have a bit better sound.

So any advice on how to tell when a higher price is worth it, and what extra features those higher priced items have over others? And maybe some personal recommendations. I plan to mostly use this headset for better sound quality and not so much for the microphone, so if I get a cheap one, I don't care if it's universal, but if I spend $60, I'd want to make sure it has PS3, PC, and 360 connectivity just in case.

Edit. Just decided to place an order for some Audio-Technica ATH-M30s. I'm impatient. Guess I can return them if I don't like them at least.

I was in the same ballpark awhile ago
I had been trying to decide what headset/headphone to get myself, tired of not being able to hear vital subtle sounds when playing games. (really tired of people walking up behind me and stabbing me in the back) kinda ruins your game
So I also settled on a Sound versus chatting at the moment.

I ordered a Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS 5.1/7.1 channel Dolby surround sound (LINK)

Amazon had it on sale for $69.99

and since that allows the use of any headphone/headset I opted to give a pair of
Audio-Technica's ATH-A700 closed-back dynamic headphones (LINK)

Amazon had them on sale at the time for: $111.65

I also bought a clip on mic to see if I could rig it up to have the ability to use a microphone
(haven't done it yet though) this is the one most people use:
Zalman Microphone Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone (Link)

Amazon had this on special price for: $9.06 but it's been lower

Is the DDS good? All my research has led me to believe that anything by a gaming company is not really a quality product but something marketed towards gamers that don't know any better and pay a premium for convenience. Then again, the only alternative I've heard is the Astro mixamp and I guess Astro is a gaming company. Hopefully I don't regret getting the A30s compared to the more expensive options. Reviews are just no help at all.
