I saw something similar on Reddit and thought it would be interesting to see what the CAG community says.

Let's start this thread with, say, items 25-dollars (USD) or under.

I'll start with BreathRx Tongue Scrapers. A three-pack for $7.11.

I have used them for almost 10 years. And I never travel without one. Just one of those inexpensive, everyday items that have become a part of my daily routine.

Goo Gone. Great for removing glue residue found on cases (I'm looking at you, Gamestop). One bottle is like a lifetime supply.

Haha. When I was a freshman 3 years ago, I knew would need some tools, considering my dad and I work construction and basically survive on our tools. So I went to Walmart and saw a 200-something piece tool set about the size of a drill box. It included metric and standard sockets, wrenches, Alan wrenches and like 40 different screwdriver bits. All for only $15.

So I reccommend Walmart for anybody who needs the above. But I'd agree with Javery, you HAVE to own some tools. (I would also say a tape measure. There's nothing worse than not having a tape measure around.)

Also, after recently buying one, I'd say a battery charger and rechargeable batteries should be on the list too. We've all still got things that use AAs and AAAs, so we might as well save a few bucks.

A printer. I don't understand how someone could have a computer and not have one.

George Foreman Grill. Kind of a pain to clean out the grease, but it's compact and works great on burgers.

Versatile cables. You can find multi-headed cables at places like Big Lots with every kind of USB plug worth having. You need multiples of these for the house, car, and whatever you take when you're far from home or vehicle. Backpack, luggage, etc.

In this day and age, how dumb would it feel to be unable to charge your devices for lack of the right cable.

Also, USB power adapter plugs for home and car. The cables aren't much use without this.

And make sure it's a laser printer. Inkjets do not deal well with long periods of non-use. These go for as little as $50 these days.

Heh, that makes me think of a great illustration from an issue of High Times around 1976 IIRC. My older brother was young enough that getting hold of it was a big deal as it was treated like porn and not supposed to be sold to minors.

The article was a discussion of Quaaludes aka disco biscuits and why they were the drug of choice for morons. In the picture there were three people. Two, a man and a woman, are on the couch trying to have sex but have become so entangled in their clothes that they are trapped immobile. The third person is at a stereo system trying to change records but has only managed to tear off the tone arm and is staring at in stupefied amazement.

fleshlight...oops flashlight and a pocket knife.

Homemade fleshlight? I'm down.

[SPOILER: UNRELATED TO THE ABOVE] I keep tweezers, Q-tips, nail clippers, nasal spray, and eye drops around me at ALL times. Scissors also. Shit is so annoying when you need one of those items and they are not immediately near you. Inner ear itch, congestion, and painful eyes are especially infuriating. Nail clippers to clip off hang nails and all those little surprisingly painful "skin rip" things you get on your cuticles. Tweezers are good for a variety of uses, so they get a mention too. Scissors are versatile and eliminate a lot of frustration with other things as well.

I keep all of these things at desks, in my car, in any travel bags, laptop bag, bathroom, coffee table, etc. They are all almost within a few seconds reach. I'd call these all required/bare minimum.

After that it depends on what you do all day and where you are. Sharpies, a nice pen, tape, a largely empty USB drive, a USB drive loaded with several apps, a wireless mouse (since I hate laptop touchpads), a keyring multitool, a small multitool/screwdriver with interchangeable bits, sunglasses, generic USB charger that can plug into wall outlets and generic USB cords to charge various devices with, rechargeable batteries and some regular alkalines, ibuprofen, laundry pen/Goo Gone pen, hand sanitizer, headphone splitter cable, lint brush, a small utility knife/razor...

I subscribe heavily to the idea of "always be prepared" and have found that keeping such things handy allows you to help others around you as well. There really is nothing more irritating than needing a tool or item and not having it near you, and either having to go get it immediately (and thus waste time/effort and pay a premium when you could have bought it much cheaper online) or delaying gratification/satisfaction.
