My friend's 360 kicked the bucket with the RROD. It's an older Elite with HDMI, but out of warranty.

How much does MS charge to fix if it is out of warranty? Are there ways to fix this elsewhere? I know a lot of Craig's list ads advertise fixing, but are those legit? Or will the console RROD again after a couple of months?

Any and all help appreciated!

I have fixed a good number of RROD consoles. From my experience, there really is no guarantee how long it will last. I have done some that lasted over 2 years, and have others fail after a few months. It's really a easy fix if you just search through you tube. Will cost you about $20 in supplies, or just take it to someone and let them deal with it.

Thanks for the info. It looks like getting a slim might be an option. Does anyone know if you can take the hard drive from an xbox phat and place it into a 4 gig slim? Does the 4 gig slim have the casing for the hard drive, or is the 4 gig of space somewhere else?

4GB is flash memory on the system board.

The slim will take a fat system's HDD, though it doesn't come with the enclosure. You can find it on the Internet in numerous places, such as eBay or Amazon.
