I bought this from Amazon back in Oct when they sold it for about the same price...I finally bought the game yesterday...need to start reading. Would anyone say it is better to just play the game and use this as help or does reading some of the intro really help you get started better?

I rarely use guides on first runs, I like to explore around first and use the guide after I finish the game. Dark souls is one of those games that will make you rage if your not used to dying constantly

All the info in the guide except the maps was invalidated with an update.
Unless you're buying it for maps or pictures its pretty useless.

And as was already mentioned its cheaper at game stop anyway.

Wait so all the stats are now different? So it is basically just an atlas? WTF?

$15 seems too much for an out-of-date strategy guide, thanks for the post though

Hate to keep harping on this but are the character guides still any good? Or did they change those stats also?

You can play the game offline without having to update it. That's what I'm doing, but there are a couple of updated things that would really help out like increased souls, arrows at every merchant, and an earlier bottomless box. You can bypass the updates by pressing O. Even WITH the guide, I'm over 50 hours in and I just beat the spider boss.
