During the afternoon broadcast, Fox News was covering a low-speed chase in Phoenix, Ariz., and cut to live footage of the suspect getting out of his vehicle and running erratically through a field. The cameras continued rolling, giving viewers a clear aerial view of the man eventually stopping, pulling a gun from his pocket, appearing to shoot himself in the head and falling over.

As soon as the man appears to reach for the gun, Smith can be heard repeating insistently, "Get off it, get off it, get off it!" but the producers didn't cut in time — only switching back to Smith after the man was on the ground.

After a brief break, Smith explained to viewers that the production team had anticipated that something might go awry and had tried to prevent the footage from being broadcast.

"We created a five-second delay as if you were to bleep back your DVR five seconds ... so that we would see in the studio five seconds before you did," Smith explained. "So that if anything went horribly wrong, we'd be able to cut away from it without subjecting you to it. And we really messed up. And we're all very sorry. That didn't belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV, and I personally apologize to you that that happened."

5-second delay fail. I guess human error but damn you would expect somebody on the button especially when you're broadcasting something as unpredictable as a car chase.

I can only imagine the producer getting his ass chewed out for about an hour after that.

I'm 100% shocked that books still exist in today's day and age. I thought they'd be out by now. They make up like 1% of today's entertainment and unless you're 60 or older, stray away from books and start emersing yourself with real entertainment.

I can't believe how easy it was for that guy to pull the trigger. Why was he running in the first place?

this is somewhat of a personal question, as in one that you have to ask yourself, but did anyone feel anything from watching that?

i certainly didn't feel any different about that than whatever other bullshit is usually on the news. is it really so bad that they showed it?

Yeah, it's not anywhere near as graphic as they make it sound.

As someone who lives in Southern California I always find it funny that when they show these chases when a police officer kills someone and its shown he is a hero. Yet when a person decided to kill himself or they start shooting back at the cops they local media will pull back and make and often not show anything. Its all to common down here.

Also the local Fox station here in So Cal has got in trouble from the FCC 2 times for cutting into children programing for a high speed chase and in one case the man at the end of the chase lit himself on fire on one of the major freeways.

No.

If you watch foreign news, they show everything. They will show what happens when a bomb goes off in the middle east and people stagger away bloody, they will show bodies and body bags. It injects reality into the stuff that goes on around the globe (including the wars that the US started)

Fox News doesn't want reality, they want exciting car chases like in the movies without the graphic real life consequences. Fuck them and Fuck anyone who enjoyed the thrill of the car chase but was offended because Fox accidentally showed the ending. What do people expect?

The LA freeway suicide from '98 made that look like a children's show...if anyone remembers that

When I was in High School a friend got a 100% on a D.A.R.E. test and they gave him a D.A.R.E. duffel bag. Two years later, a drug dealer that was a friend of ours at the time asked to borrow something to transport 2kg of cocaine in and he handed over his D.A.R.E. bag. He brought it back to him with an oz of weed in it as a thank you.

Wow. That's up there with the MSNBC editing the photo of the guy with the AK in Arizona. as far as stupid news goes.

And Holy crap, the people that do Fox News Feed/caption "typers" have made some hilarious typos. Even my local Fox channel is bad at it. I watched a story a few days ago that had the caption "killed femal dog owner offers reward" for a good 5 minutes.

I bet they get a nice penalty from the FCC

Or the 03' integration suicide.

First, how can you claim prior non-existance to devalue a movement? I am sure the civil rights movement would love that. "Well, there was no movement to free the slaves before, so why is it relavent now?"

Suicide is a possibility when they cover these chases. They want to show it for sensationalism and entertainment, yet want to cut away when they get real. Either show the events in their entirety or don't show them at all. It's complete fucking bullshit when they apologize for showing this stuff. During the LA Riots, some of the internal news jargon got on the air like "We got some good fires starting over here." They love this stuff. Anyone who falls for it is naive.

I agree and that's what I meant earlier when I said "if you play with fire". If the news channels want to broadcast events like this live as "news" in an attempt to whore out ratings then they need to undestanding the endings aren't always going to be pretty.
