Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What do you mean by GOLD MEMBERS ONLY?
A: GOLD members are paid subscribers to Xbox Live. These deals are only available to them.

Q: I'm an XBOX LIVE FREE member, can I use a 48 hour trial to get the GOLD discount?
A: No. 48 hour codes only work for online play.

Q: What about the promotional GOLD weekends?
A: No. Those only allow online play.

Q: How long is this deal going on?
A: One week (seven days) unless otherwise noted. Most sales in the OP have start and end dates listed.

Q: I'm not seeing the sale price, what is going on?
A: If the deal is live, make sure you are logged-in to Xbox.com or your 360 with a GOLD account. Sometimes there is a disconnect between Xbox.com and the Xbox Dashboard.

Q: When do the deals go live?
A: Deal of the Week deals go live on Tuesday morning usually around 9am EST. (Monday's before 3/22/11)

Q: What about all the other sales and promos?
A: Microsoft has gotten into the habit of offering other sales and promos as well as the Deal of the Week. They are listed in this thread to reduce clutter on the Deals Forum and to help maximize your savings.

Q: How do I buy Games on Demand with Xbox Points?
A: Often overlooked, GoD are by default displayed in dollars both on Xbox.com as well as on the console, but on the very-first confirmation screen of the download process is the option to use Microsoft Points in place of real-world currency.

Through the console, after first selecting to download a GoD you are greeted by a familiar gray confirmation screen that pops up displaying the size of the download as well as confirming the price. At the bottom of this gray pop-up is the instruction to press the "X button" in order to change the payment type to MSP. Pictured below with an arrow:
confirmation.jpg

On Xbox.com they've made it much more obvious, the confirmation "extra step" pop-up after clicking the download link displays a link that simply says "Use Microsoft Points" directly under the price in dollars at the top of the page.

Q: Should I have any concerns about waiting to buying something on sale?
A: After a few years of experience with Xbox LIVE, ReddJoey thinks you might want to know:
-Items can be pulled from Xbox.com with little or no notice (Games, Content, DLC)
-If you wait for an item to go on sale, it might never come (and the item(s) could be pulled)
-End dates can be flimsy. This could mean the sale is cut a bit short (RARE) or run a bit over (Happening more often). Don't count on this happening if you are on the fence. You might miss the sale.
-Consider keeping 800-1200 points on reserve for a 1-Day sale. They are rare, but you will kick yourself if you miss it

Q: What if I don't see a sale/promo listed here?
A: Post it or feel free to update the OP, as it is wikified and anyone can edit it.

Q: Are there any other links I should know about?
A: Yes.
CAG Xbox 360 Forum - Discussion on games and lots of gaming groups to join.
CAG Xbox Live Free Stuff Thread - Great thread and discussion of the free things on Xbox Live
CAG Xbox Live Subscription Thread - Great thread about the deals for Xbox Live on the dashboard
CAG Xbox Live Code Trading Thread- CAGs trading XBL codes.
CAG Xbox Live Achievement Trading & Discussion Group - A group dedicated to XBL achievements. Join up with other people who are in need of the same achievements you are.

CAG Xbox Rewards Thread - The latest updates and discussions about the Xbox Rewards program.
List of XBLA games on Wikipedia - Can be useful for sorting titles by price, but isn't always 100% up to date.
List of XBLA games that haven't been on sale (2010-Present)

Q: What are your sources?
A: Sources:
-Majornelson.com
-Xbox UK DotW
-Xbox US DotW
-Xbox JP DotW
-Spylon's Xbox Live Database
-Various Publications/Blogs

Q: Do you mind if I copy this info and post it somewhere else?
A: Not really, but please respect the hard work that the CAG Community puts into assembling these deals each week, and please mention where you got it from and not just straight copy/paste the posts.

Q: Do you have a list of the older sales?
A: Yes. I'm not sure if it includes every single sale since the beginning of Deal of the Week in 2008 & 2009, but it's pretty comprehensive up until 7/23/2012.

Q: I noticed some talk about "compilation discs?" What is that and is it cheaper?
A: Some of the content from Xbox Live has been put on retail discs. Some discs have XBLA games, others have several pieces of DLC from one game. Depending on what content you are looking for it you might want to consider looking for a retail disc. Some CAGs and ReddJoey have put together this handy list. When an item that can be found on one of these disc goes on sale, a disc vs D/L discussion will likely come up in the thread.

Impressions of Games on Sale:

The Cave:

I guess I'm the only one that absolutely loved the cave. I thought the puzzles were a lot of fun, but the story, humor, and way it was told was what really captivated me. I played through it three times, and still enjoyed it thoroughly. That said, it is most definitely an adventure game and NOT a puzzle game. Think Monkey Island or Sam and Max. The only real knock I have against it is the fact you have to play through it five times minimum if you want to see all the endings (I didn't even realize you could get good endings until I'd already completed my third run), and there really should have been a way to skip all the parts you already played.

There was also a lot of glitches, but I'm pretty sure that was because I played the PS3 version. I think for that price it's a great buy, and something completely unique and offbeat. If you like Double Fine, you will be able to look over the rough parts and see all the joy and love that was put into the game. If you don't have any real affinity for the developer, well, you probably won't get as much out of it. I got it from PS+, but had I paid 600 MSP for it, I don't think I'd be disappointed

-MrNinjaSquirrel

Condemned:

Condemned aka "Bum Destroyer" was pretty fun & spooky. But if you have GS credit or just prefer to have it on disc, they are $4.99 each/used for either Condemned 1 or 2 in store.

-destro4eva

Bum Destroyer sounds like a British porn. Anyways...I Too enjoyed Condemned. My only complaint is I hope you like the most slow moving cop in the world, because he's in this game! He can sprint, but even calling it sprinting is stretching it. More like he can fast walk and even then he can only do it for about 5 seconds before being winded. Otherwise if people like the original FEAR, just imagine that except instead of highly trained soldiers you're fighting abunch of overly agitated hobos with random melee weapons.

-bardockkun

Sonic Games:

As someone mentioned above Sonic CD is one of the better ones and looks great with the XBLA port. Skip both Sonic Adventure games, they haven't aged well and the camera is horrendous. If you want a current-gen Sonic game that isn't racer as the cart games are rather good, Sonic Generations is the best of the non-cart-racer games of this generation and does a good job of combining 3D and 2D gameplay bits. You can also skip or grab Sonic 4 parts 1 & 2. They're sort of meh in my opinion. I think they get ragged on a bit more than what they deserve, though the original price point was probably half the reason as these should never have been priced at 1200msp (800msp should have been the starting point). As for the Genesis ports. They're all fine and decent. The S&K has the lock-on function with the other games which might be nifty for a big fan of Sonic. At $2 it's hard to pass these up. But there is the Ultimate Collection which I know I grabbed on disc for $10 at some point so be aware of that.

-Skonson

If you ONLY care about the Sonic games, I think it'd be cheaper to buy them through XBLA. The bonus being they all have separate achievements there if you care, though Sonic 2 has some virtually impossible ones since no one plays the online racing. UGC is the better deal if you want more Genesis stuff, and they have bonus stuff like developer interviews and I think some concept art in that version.

S&K XBLA still has the "lock-on technology" as long as you own S2 or S3. Having S1 gives you the sphere mini-game too.

Neither 4 Ep 1 and 2, nor Sonic CD, are on disc, so they're the only way to go. I haven't heard much good on Sonic 4, and really didn't like the physics in the demo, but check them out and decide for yourself.

Sonic CD is good, and got a few bonuses for the HD port, which was done being done by a fan that was then hired by Sega because it was so well done. You can do the classic Sonic 2 spindash (tap tap tap) instead of the "hold button for speed" CD had instead (toggle-able), and you can choose between the US and EU/JP soundtracks. It's probably the hardest classic Sonic to get the good ending, since you have to do a lot of time-travel and hunting for roboticizers. Definitely pick it up.

-SIX min WHISTLE

Sonic Adventure? I'd never wish that on my worst enemies. It's cruel and unusual punishment.

-FriskyTanuki

I still prefer Sonic Adventure 1 to Sonic Adventure 2. The gameplay is not as bad as everyone says. I can run through stages with precision. Chaos was just awesome, and something about the exploration aspect was really fun. Was cool to be able to explore a Sonic world. Kinda the same appeal that Mario 64 had. Big and Amy were meh, but they made the Sonic stages feel more rewarding and the build up to Super Sonic was great.

I didn't care for Shadow much, but I guess he's okay. The last boss fight wasn't as good as Sonic 1, but some of the sage design was better. Either way, they're two nostalgic goldmines for me, so I bought them both :P

-AugustAPC

Guardian Heroes:

If you don't buy Guardian Heroes for $2, your soul will turn to black, shrivel up and die when the clock strikes midnight next Tuesday.

K I'm done reserving. The 2nd post needs a lot of formatting work, which I'll do today. If you have any input for the title, OP, or 2nd or 3rd posts please feel free to let me know. Hope everyone is ok with this change. I think the change will be a positive for the CAG community. Thanks.

I think I'll be alright, I just want to format it the same way as ReddJoey had, then update the links and copy/paste all the spoiler info.

Major Nelson will hopefully be posting the next 2 weeks of sales info on his blog tomorrow. But you're right, we won't know what next week holds until early tomorrow morning.

Awesome to see a new thread for the year. I hope Reddjoey is alright with passing the torch. He hasn't had the time to maintain the thread lately and now seems like a good time to move on. He did a great job and I have no doubt Tylerh1701 (and everyone else who keeps the OP updated regularly-Bloomy and Cornelius muck about in there a bit) will serve this thread well.

Thanks for all the support, guys. :) 2nd post should be formatted to be almost exactly as ReddJoey's old FAQ, I just updated and tweaked a couple minor things. Please let me know if there's anything else anyone would like updated, otherwise, carry on as normal.

Also, the one thing I don't know how to do is change what is written on a Spoiler tag. If anyone can inform me of how to do this, I'll fix the spoiler tags in the 2nd post to properly reflect what is behind the spoiler.

The first spoiler of the second post (prior sales) can be wiped out, since they're from early 2012. There's also a little lingering "XBox Live Achie" text above the sources question.

Use customspoiler=text to have text show on the spoiler button.

Thanks, thanks, and thanks.

Did we just stop keeping track of the lists of DotW and sales? Do we have any info from 7/23/2012 onward? For the answer to the "list of old sales" question, I put a link to one of my Google Drive spreadsheets which has a list of sales since 2008.

Since the prior sales list was in the 2nd post, only Reddjoey or a mod could update it. Spylon's site would have everything if looking for a specific item. If you want to put together a chronological list, the edit history of the 2nd and 3rd 2012 topics would have them. Should be able to find the DOTW's easily enough by checking versions of the page made on Tuesdays, though some of the other deals may be harder to find without going through every version.

I didn't think to go through the Edit histories of the other 2 threads, that's a good idea if I ever feel like actually doing that.
