HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) - Driver Paul Dana died after a two-car crash Sunday during the warmup for the season-opening IRL IndyCar Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The other driver, Ed Carpenter, was awake and alert at a Miami hospital, IRL officials said.

Dana, 30, a former motorsports journalist with a degree from Northwestern, competed in three IRL races for Ethanol Hemelgarn Racing last year with a best finish of 10th in the race at Homestead.

Dana and Carpenter, the stepson of IRL founder Tony George, both were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. IRL officials said Carpenter was awake and alert.

It was Carpenter who spun and hit the wall moments after the practice began. As Carpenter's battered car slid to a stop, Dana, a rookie, slammed into it at almost full speed.

Carpenter drives for Vision Racing and team general manager Larry Curry said he was told Carpenter "would be fine."

Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Racing, said he had no information on Dana, one of his three drivers.

Don't watch racing, but that doesn't make it less of a tragedy. RIP

Not much of a racing fan, but this is really sad. Even worse is that his wife was (I believe) in another city, and they weren't able to reach her for around 45 minutes because she was in church, so the lady didn't even get a chance to say goodbye, or see him before he died. RIP
