Top 10 Games of Hbomb's Youth Part 1

Birth- 5th Grade (1979-1990) Posted by Hbomb5.
Hey, everyone. This is Hbomb from the semi-popular Cross Border Gaming podcast. This is the first of 4 lists consisting of my favorite games, growing up all the way through college. This first list takes me all the way to 5th grade (1990). During this time, I owned a ColecoVision and a NES.
10. Smurfs

First, despite the PS1 graphic, I am actually referring to the ColecoVision version. When I was growing up, the only console we had was ColecoVision (we didn't get a NES until Summer '89). We had 3 games: Zaxxon, Donkey Kong, and Smurfs. I remember playing this game a lot. It probably wouldn't hold up to today's standards, but I was a kid, so it was enough. As I've mentioned on CBG, I consider "Smurfs" to be one of my main gateway games.

Another one of my ColecoVision gateway games. I've also played the NES version, but this is the one I played the most growing up. What can I say? Donkey Kong is a classic.

No, I did not play the 2600 version. There's just no entry for the coin-op version. My parents briefly owned a pizza place in the mid-80s, which came with 2 arcade machines- Asteroids, and "Space Wipeout", a Space Invaders clone. When the restaurant closed down, my parents brought the coin-ops home. They were always very popular whenever my sister or I would have friends over. Heck, they both got some major playtime at my high school graduation party in 1997. Unfortunately, when my parents moved out of state in 1999, the coin-ops didn't make the trip.

Back in elementary school, we would go to the computer lab once a week, and there would be different educational games for us to play. My favorite was The Oregon Trail. I never was able to get all the way to Oregon, however, as either my party died or I ran out of time before I could get there. The more recent versions just don't really seem to have the same charm and have added so many whistles and bells (including touch controls).

My cousin Shaun had his NES before my family got ours, so I would often play his games while I was hanging out with him. RC Pro-Am was one that we played a lot. Unfortunately, the game only had 1-player (FAIL!), but it was a fun game to play.
5. Kung Fu

This was another one of Shaun's games. Simple, but fun.

My first SMB2 experience was when my family went to visit friends in Ohio, and their son had a good-sized game library, including SMB2 and Mega Man 2. SMB2 was also one of 3 games I got for Christmas in 1989 (along with Anticipation and Dragon Warrior), and was a game my sister and I put a lot of time into.

Again, another game I didn't actually own. This one actually belonged to my friends Jonathan & Christopher (CBG Fans: Jonathan was the friend I mentioned in my SMB3 flashback story). I would go on to get my own copy a few years later, but this was one we were always surrounded around the TV watching Christopher playing.
2. Contra

This is another one that Jonathan and Christopher introduced me to. With the Konami code, we've had Contra sessions go on for hours.

My Aunt Samm and Uncle Richard gave me this one for Christmas '89, but it was my dad who mostly played it. (I've mentioned that on CBG as well.) He would stay up well past my bedtime and play while my mom watched. This would also become one of my gateway games into RPGs.
