Games/Series I'm Ready To See Go "Next-Gen"

Posted by dmunkee.
Simply a list of some of my favorite games or series that I'd love to see get a proper next-gen update. Some of these are probably already on the way, but the simple fact that they aren't here already just bums me out.

I'm a lifelong Mega Man fan, and while MM9 was awesome, MM10 pretty much cashed out the retro goodwill that came with it. I think it's time for a proper Mega Man release on consoles. It doesn't even matter what series they want to go with (Original, X, or Legends) I just want it now.

I found the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game to be a fun little homage to River City Ransom, but it also made me want to go back and play RCR more than anything else. The game has it sequels and re-releases, but they all tinkered with the original's winning formula of simple-but-satisfying brawling, RPG-ish character progression, and humor a little too much.

Bushido Blade was a unique weapons-based fighting game in that one well placed hit could decide who wins or loses. Players could also end up with an injured arm or leg that would make it harder to attack and defend, but not necessarily mean the end of a round. Indeed coming out on top with nothing but one arm able to swing your giant hammer and kill your opponent as he rushed in to finish you off remains one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had.

The premise is stupid simple, try to get as many mice (ChuChus) into your goal to score points while trying to keep cats (KapuKapus) out to keep from losing points. Things get crazier when you can get items that influence things like the direction that mice and cats go in or the speed at which they move. Add up to 4 players in the mix and things go from crazy to absolute bananas. I'm surprised the game hasn't seen a XBLA or PSN release, or even a knock off at this point.

Strider was another of those: "side-scrolling action platformers featuring a ninja" that so many games were in the 90's but I'll be damned if it wasn't one of my favorites. The series' futuristic setting and Strider's ability to summon robot hawks, tigers, and laser shooting orbs always appealed to me. Of course, I'd also love for Strider to be more than the Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden clone that it'd probably end up being.

With the upcoming release of The Sly Cooper Collection as well as being featured in the upcoming Heroes on the Move, Sly Cooper is making a comeback. At least I hope he is. With Sucker Punch currently hard a work on inFamous 2 for next year, and no actual word on a Sly 4 yet, it doesn't look like we'll be getting our heist on anytime soon.

An action RPG that was probably more popular upon release because it came bundled with a demo for Final Fantasy VIII. The gameplay coupled with it's lighthearted story and humor definitely made it a standout among similar games at the time. The game also featured action figures to collect, which were essentially the character models in mocked up packaging that you could actually open and view. Which is still a brilliant idea to this day.

Before this year's E3, there would've been a lot more Nintendo games on this list. Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Kid Icarus are all set to make their big console debuts (with Kid Icarus heading to the 3DS) within the rest of the year and into next. Leaving the question of when we'll see Fox and the crew up in the air. I'd love a home console release but I'm guessing we'll be seeing StarFox on the 3DS since, you know, lasers + meteors = shit flying at you in 3D!

While the game has it's spiritual sequels, successors, and re-releases, no other game has been able to hit the sweet spot for me that this game has. It's intricate battle system, job customization, and story (even if horribly/hilariously localized) are what keep me coming back at least once a year since it's original release. I curse Square Enix every time they release a game that isn't a new Final Fantasy Tactics.

Honestly, I'm throwing this on here to take my list to an even 10 and because Kingdom Hearts 3 needs to come out so my girlfriend will stop asking me about it.

I completely agree 10,000% with ChuChu Rocket! I am very surprised it hasn't come out for XBLA or PSN and I've been waiting YEARS for a new one or remake.

I've been dying for Champions of Norrath to go next gen already.

Even a reboot would do.

I'm pretty sure Chu Chu Rocket is coming to xbla as past of the new Dreamcast on xbla thing they are doing.

Would really love to see a HD version of Shadow of the Colossus. Maybe even a few more creatures?

Agree with you 100% on Strider, even if they could bring it on XBLA/PSN I would pick this up in a heart beat!

I agree wholehearted with most of your choices. Bushido Blade? Of course! It could even be a downloadable game. Deadliest Warrior was basically a cheap Bushido Blade knockoff in the first place. I'd love another FFT where you could actually rotate the playfield too. But does chuchu rocket really need high def graphics? It really just needs greater availability.

I'm not even a fan of the Kingdom Hearts games, and I would also like to see that series go "next-gen." The art in those games would look even more stunning if done entirely in HD.

holy crap, river city ransom. I played that game many many years ago but could never remember the name. Everytime I tried to think of it, I could only pull up double dragon which never seemed to fit right.

I agree with the list, it has alot of games that would be great on xbla. The only thing that is close to a disagreement is with Bushido Blade, I loved the game and wanted a remake on live, but then they released Deadliest Warrior which filled the void for me.

edit- after posting my comment I realized that a poster a couple of spots above me said almost exactly the same thing. lol I guess great minds think alike.

@thingsfallnapart I'd love a new Champions/Baldur's gate style game. Only thing that came close for me recently was Borderlands last year.

@yukine Yeah, I'm not a big Kingdom Hearts guy either I watched my girlfriend play through the first 2 games and was totally cool with that. KH2 has some great looking cut scenes.
