In my continuing saga to chronicle every year of the Wii, this edition focuses on 2008, which while a decent year in it's own right, I don't think could be compared fairly to the awesome content available from the previous year. The big push this year seemed to be online multiplayer, and really just multiplayer games in general, than the more single player offerings of 2007. With 1st party games like Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Animal Crossing, along with 3rd party efforts Boom Blox, Bomberman Blast, and CoD World at War, Nintendo was set on showing their strength as an online / offline multiplayer contender, though for online still significantly behind on what the PS3 and 360 were offering at the time.

Continuing to promote the Wii's online capabilities, 2008 was also the year that the long awaited WiiWare service launched, and was already starting to produce some top-notch titles. Seeing as how Nintendo still refuses to put these games on sale, I will only mention the top 5 WiiWare games in this list, focusing more on value of the games in relevance to today's market, so some key games will be excluded.

We also saw an extension of the causal gaming phenomenon continue, with Nintendo published titles like Endless Ocean, Wii Fit and Wii Music (which was obviously bad enough to not be mentioned in this list!), which further put a wedge between the more traditional gamers and the Wii console, in spite of the quality of the games released.

In a final note for 2008, the Wii was starting to become more of a common sight to be stocked in stores, which means many people (myself included) were able to finally purchase one without hunting heavily. I doubt that the Wii U will be hard to come by in 2014, but you never can tell.

I limited this list to 30 titles overall, as I felt it was a good enough number to include some niche titles (a top 20 list would be sort of boring and predictable), while avoiding too much average clutter. As always, I put these games in chronological order, with my personal experience with the game and series as a whole. Please feel free to add in your personal favorites not mentioned in the comments below.

Wii newcomers and backloggers alike, here is the list for 2008:

Release Date: January 22nd, 2008; Played?: Yes
When transitioning Arika's Everblue series to the Wii, many of the typical 'video game' mechanics were left behind in order to appease the newfound casual user base, which resulted in simplified gameplay and minimal obstacles in this diving sim. There are some overarching goals and periodic mission based dives, but for the most part it's a free reign, explore the fictitious Manoa Lai Sea locale at your leisure adventure. While the removal of said gaming objectives and threats alienated the typical gamer, what they created was an incredibly in-depth experience for the enthusiast, in which hardcore players are still finding out new secrets and marine life trends even today. The 2010 sequel is arguably the better choice to experience EO, however the option to add in your own MP3 tracks while diving is only present in this version, which is a big plus for me personally. This game also featured online gameplay with dual player dive sessions, though first and foremost this is a single player excursion.

As the only Wii One Piece game to make its way stateside, fans of the series should already know about this one. What most people don't know is that this is one of the most expensive Wii games available, and you would be hard pressed to find a good condition copy for less than $50-60 bucks used. It's a shame though, as it looks to be a fun 3rd person adventure game, with plenty of beat em up action and mild RPG elements intertwined.

Besides the excellent 1st party efforts from Nintendo, there were very few 3rd party exclusive titles that Wii owners could brag about up to this point. With No More Heroes, however, the Wii-only owners finally had something unique to sink their teeth into, which could stand toe to toe with the HD consoles in terms of its content. Though the sequel certainly streamlined many of activities and world map exploration, for those that wish to see the Grasshopper Manufacture Inc.'s (who also created the niche Killer7 for the previous console generation) entry title on the Wii would do well to pick up a used copy for an easy $5-10.

From its primitive origins centuries ago, its amazing how little of the core mechanic of pinball machines has changed even today. While no where near as popular as it was during the 80s-90s arcade reign, those who are interesting in reliving the past, or igniting a new flame, for the classic games should look no further than this collection. In terms of multiplayer, you would be hard pressed to find a more appealing genre to the masses, so from your grandmother to your little cousin, it could double as a good get-together game as well.

Out of all the Rockstar Games titles, the one that often gets overlooked is Bully, originally a PS2 exclusive, compared to its more currently popular series (GTA, Red Dead and Max Payne, for example). For Wii owners, however, it has the distinction of being one of only three Rockstar games to come out for the platform (Table Tennis and Manhunt 2 were the others), and the Scholarship edition for the Wii is probably the most popular version available. Due to the school setting, it is definitely the most approachable sand-box game from Rockstar, if sleeping with and / or beating up hookers is a little too risque for you.

Release Date: March 9th, 2008; Played?: No (though I owned both SSB and SSBM)
One of the most popular games across all current gen systems, SSBB needs little introduction. Due to the delays in 2007, the game was pushed back to an oddly early release in March, though of course I think the Nintendo devout would of screamed bloody murder if they decided to delay it to the holiday season instead. Since I have yet to play this version, I'll leave the argument on the table for which SSB version is best, though I have read enough to know about the annoying trip mechanic in Brawl, let's hope Nintendo removes such equalizers in the future releases. Another strong punch for Nintendo's online service as well, which still sees regular play even today.

While 2007 had some great light gun games, this year was pretty empty by comparison for the genre. While next year's Overkill is probably the definitive HotD experience, this arcade re-release is still very much worth the cost ($15 or less) for the enthusiast. On a side note, if I was Sega, I would of moved my release date around to try to avoid the SSBB behemoth, instead of only two days after it. If you are interested in these light gun rail shooters, you should probably invest in some handgun controller accessories for the most authentic experience, as there are plenty of opportunities to use them for the Wii.

Joining the ranks of RE4, Okami is the best example of porting an existing game to the Wii console successfully, integrating the new Wii controller interface seamlessly into the classic adventure. This release was bittersweet for the diehard Wii fans, not for the game mind you, but for the assumed fact that third party support for the platform was mostly in the form of ports and re-releases, with very few truly unique titles to call their own. In 2008 that was still speculation, though in 20/20 hindsight it was certainly a sign of the coming times, hopefully the Wii U will avoid the same fate.

With Mario Kart being the most successful spin off series featuring Nintendo's prime mascot, just about everyone has played at least one title in the 20+ year lineage. With great recognition comes a need for accessibility, and while previous iterations have been newcomer friendly enough, this game levels the playing field even more so, which was one of the gripes veterans have with this version. The new Wii Wheel works well enough (though personally I don't care for it), though the inclusion of online gameplay, along with a large roster of characters, vehicles, and tracks, are the major selling points. Still pricey over four years later, but ultimately worth it for the amount of gameplay you'll get out of it.

When I think of great third party exclusive titles, one of my top selections is Boom Blox, if only for the fact it's the greatest local multiplayer game released for the Wii. An odd cooperative effort between EA and Steven Spielberg, at its core is a simple puzzle game with expertly tuned physics, in where your goal is to destroy or dismantle block structures more efficiently than your opponents in multiplayer, or to create as much / specific destruction with limitations in single player mode. You can even create your own levels and share them with your friends online, to give the title even more replay value. While it would be best to get the superior 2009 sequel, Bash Party, the original will always hold a special place in my heart.

When the WiiWare service finally came to fruition, LostWinds best exemplified what was possible with the Wii interface, and was a poster-child for the platform for some time. A platformer with puzzle elements, you must guide your hero with the typical game maneuvers with the nunchuck, while also controlling gusts of wind to aide in your progress with the Wii remote motions. A simple premise that was further enhanced by a co-op mode, with the only major let down being the ease of difficulty and it's rather short length. The 2009 sequel is notably a similar experience with expanded content for the same 1000 Wii points price, though both entries are unique enough to warrant their entry into your digital collection.

It is just a game, or is it a legitimate fitness tool? I remember thinking the same thing when the adverts came out for Wii Fit, and I was wondering what the heck Nintendo had in mind for this console generation. Obviously still quite popular with the casual user base, in the end it was more of a tech demo+ for the new Wii Balance Board than a way to shed pounds, though some of the games did capture the Wii Sports magic, for their genius in simplicity. To note, the balance board will also work for Wii U, so if you happen to find either the original bundle or the stand alone board for cheap, it could be a wise future investment.

Out of all the niche genres, the shmup / bullet hell variety has one of the most devoted fanbases, despite the fact it has fallen out of favor of the general public for some time now. Blast Works takes a good middle ground approach, with a simple ascetic combined with a robust content creator for levels and ships (all of which can be shared online), which translates to essentially unlimited content. In a unique concept, the game takes a Katamari-Damacy approach to weapon upgrades, where defeated foes become attached to your ship for extra firepower. For the more traditional shmup, I would recommend Castle of Shikigami III, which was also released in 2008, but for the $5-10 price (even new) Blast Works is going for, its a great buy, especially for the chaotic multiplayer gameplay.

Summer is always a dead release time for most companies, so it was all the more welcome when Squeenix released this simple yet rather meaty dungeon crawling RPG experience to help fill in the gaps. Featuring randomly generated levels with an assortment of jobs to independently level up (and even Wifi multiplayer battles), there was certainly plenty of content to go around. Sadly, this title was overlooked for its more child-friendly appearance, and thus sold quite poorly, though fans of the turn-based exploration format would do well to check this one out, especially since used copies go for only $15 or less.

For CAGs who don't mind playing generations past gaming, compilation games always offer the best bang for your buck, though not always at launch ($30 MSRP for this title in case you were wondering). For retro-minded gamers that have missed out on the SNK / Neo Geo games of past, this is above and beyond the best way to be introduced to them, with games like Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, and 13 others with various genres represented. For the $10 price used copies goes for, it's definitely a great value to seek out today.

Before starting this list, this game honestly looked like another bargain bin dump title that shouldn't be worth a second glance. Upon doing more research, however, it appears to be another hidden gem for those that are into cooking sim titles, which have a very broad appeal across gamer demographics. Besting Cooking Mama at her own game (who failed to reach the list in 2007 or 2008 for its respective releases), this title goes beyond simple dish preparation, but also implements time management skills to run a successful restaurant. While I wouldn't pay more than $10-15 for it online, be on the lookout at your local B&M clearance areas to snag it for cheap. Also fun fact on this one, it was recently ported to PS3 and 3DS, if that says anything about its lasting appeal.

When the Wii was first introduced, many gamers drew parallels with the Wii remote shape and function to a lightsaber, and when the latest Star Wars entry offered such content, it sold quite well between the core and causal alike. While the game was far from perfect (even the much touted lightsaber control was waggle heavy), it was a great game to live out your fandom of being a sith (or at least his apprentice), while bridging the narrative gap between Ep. III and the classic New Hope movie. The best thing about this title is the price, which can be had for cheap either new or used (around $3-5 bucks used), always the greatest feature for CAGs.

Although the sequel for this game is out across several platforms, the original de Blob was quite the feather in the Wii owner's cap, proving that great game design and implementation can overcome any HD advantages of other systems. A visual and audio feast, you take control of the titular Blob character to paint your surrounding drab environments to more colorful hues, where the jazzy background music changes and evolves to follow your current progress. The only quirk about this game is the fact the jump move is mapped to shaking the Wii remote, though otherwise it's another great $5 game, especially when you add in the 4P multiplayer modes.

A triumphant return to the classic formula for the blue bomber, proving that some old school mechanics are still relevant and engaging today as they ever were. Capcom has done the favor of retaining (and even increasing) the difficulty from the previous games, eschewing the mass appeal (aka dumbing down) approach that many video game designers have embraced in this console generation. Still completely worth the full 1000 Wii point price, I should really get this someday...

September 22nd was another one of those busy days, with three great games for the Wii owner to choose from. As the only traditional single player offering from Nintendo in 2008, Wario Land Shake It! came and went very silently, overshadowed by the Wii Fit sensation that had been brewing for a few months now. Good-Feel (who was also responsible for Kirby's Epic Yarn) created an SNES game lost in time, with classic platforming action coupled with secret treasures and objectives for each stage. While still pretty cheap to find used, the fact that this game may never be re-released as a Nintendo Selects title would keep the value over time, new or used.

To some, there are few games that can hold a candle to Bomberman when it comes to frantic multiplayer goodness, in which Hudson has seen it's release on most every major console platform (just not always in the US). Wii owners finally got their chance to experience the multiplayer mayem via WiiWare (earlier in 2008 Bomberman Land was released, but more of a focus on mini-games), for both online and offline 8 player battles. Though today the online play has mostly dried up, you can imagine how fun and chaotic an 8 player local battle could be, assuming you have the people to play, that is.

I was hesitant to put World of Goo on here, not because of the quality of the game, but because the WiiWare version is the most expensive one currently available, and can be had for half the price easily on the PC retail / iPad format. Nevertheless, this game is quite possibly the best WiiWare game ever made, so I would of certainly felt bad if I did not give 2D Boy the credit they deserve.

The Dokapon series has hardly been released anywhere else but in Japan, so it was quite odd when Atlus decided to publish this RPG / four player party boardgame hybrid title to both the Wii and PS2. In a typical dice roll format, players take turns traversing the map to find treasures and defeat foes, utilizing a rock / paper / scissors approach to the battles, to gain experience and gold. You can use these subsequent spoils to level up, promote to different classes, and spend money on equipment. You can even battle your opponents on the board map to take dominance of the villages (Atlus even calls it the friendship-destroying game) to claim the ultimate victor. Sounds like a great time to you? Well, unfortunately the game easily goes for $50-70 bucks used, so it would be better to find the cheaper PS2 version if you can.

2008 was definitely the year of niche games, as there were not a large quantity of blockbuster games released. Though several games competed for this slot (Harvest Moon, Monster Lab, Mario Super Sluggers were considered), I ended up giving the nod to Telltales' revival of the classic point and click Adventure game. Don't expect blazing action, or incredibly hard, head scratching puzzles, but for the $5-10 bucks you can get this for, you'll enjoy the game for its hilarious dialogue and pop culture references. The PC version is equally appealing, as the Wii release is a bit buggy, however it is still a great quirky game to add to your collection.

CoD releases are nothing new, however in 2008, the online multiplayer was something questionable for most FPS games on Wii, though this time around Treyarch produced a solid (although limited compared to the HD twins) online component in addition to the single player campaign. Also limited in comparison to other versions is the co-op campaign mode, where the second player is a disembodied second cursor on screen, though is still a fun inclusion that only complements the experience. In 2008 the WWII setting was definitely beating a dead horse, though today it has mostly been abandoned, so for those interested in the era, its the one of the best of its type available.

By comparison to most years, 2008 was a great year to be an RPG + Wii gamer, with not only two titles in this list, but also several other more niche selections to choose from (Opoona, Dragon Quest Swords, FFCC: My Life as King, and Baroque all came out in 2008 as well). From what I have gathered online, This Tales selection is a bit lacking compared to earlier releases, though it is still a good choice to complement your RPG collection, and isn't too expensive to buy used (around $20-25 at the time of posting). That price seems to be rising, so definitely pick up a copy while you can.

Out of all the 2008 Nintendo 1st party releases, they pushed Animal Crossing as their holiday title in 2008? Not saying it's a bad game, but certainly they could of had a little more oomph if they swapped in a heavy hitter like Mario Kart instead. For those that have played AC on the GCN and DS, this is essentially the same game repackaged with some updates tossed here and there, with the most notable being the introduction of the Wii Speak accessory and online game play. For those that don't know, the virtual town / sim life experience is one of the most popular games on the Wii in terms of playing time, encouraging players to log on every day, which mimics a real time 24 hour, 365 calendar day system. That includes holidays, translating to presents on Christmas, egg hunts on Easter, and trick or treating on Halloween to name a few. Now a Nintendo Selects game, anyone with a remote interest in the causal / sim genre would do well to pick this up.

With skateboarding games falling into recent disregard (you can thank Activision for abusing Mr. Hawk), Snow sport games still had a bit of life left in them, with two notable releases in 2008 (We Ski was the other one, if you were wondering). In a quiet holiday season, and being one of the few years where a strong first party effort from Nintendo was lacking for the Christmas push, Mushroom Men actually stood a chance to get noticed. In what could be considered an underrated gem, players take control of a mushroom named Pax through real world environments, where the surreal size of everyday objects matches your diminutive stature, in the midst of a civil war between fungus tribes. Release Date: December 29th, 2008; Played?: No (kinda sad I passed on this as a Club Nintendo Reward)
Barely making the cutoff in 2008, Nintendo's own published WiiWare title featured both single player arcade score chasing, and three player co-op, with three simple yet engaging games. The co-op aspect comes in the form of a three way split center screen, where the actions you take on your screen (in either circle, square, or line arcade games) benefit your friend's screen next to yours. Simple for sure, but for the low 800 Wii points price (which also allows you to download the game to your DS), it certainly has value even today.

On a final note for WiiWare games, there were many others that I did not list here for various reasons. Some are just too expensive (Final Fantasy CC: My Life as King), others have cheaper alternatives (Toki Tori, Strong Bad's CGFAP), and others were great, but ultimately didn't make the top 5 (Dr. Mario online Rx and Tetris Party).
