Apparently there was an earlier bug and now you can use the 3 month after the $1 upgrade. But you should definitely max on live / gamepass, do the $1 ultimate, then in 3 months load on the $20 / 3 month ultimate.

Some people on the slickdeals thread have said they canceled and were able to reapply the deal. It’s ymmv since it’s a risk, but some people have reported success. If you’re only losing 6 months of potential savings it might be worth it to try.
