BD1.2 spec discs will play on the older spec blu-ray players. You'll basically just be able to play the movie and access the normal special features through the menu. Stuff like picture-in-picture commentary and the web-enabled stuff won't be accessible on the older blu-ray players.
Samsung has a dual-format player coming out in a couple months that will be at most $600. It'll also fully support HD DVD and it's interactive menus. The LG player just plays the main movie on an HD DVD.
Buy a buffalo WHR-G54s router for $50 (or $25 if you wait until it goes on sale again at CC) and put the tomato firmware on it. You now have an 4-port ethernet bridge and can plug in your PS3 along with 3 other devices.
