When you play a single player game, you get a feed of what's going on. Like, when someone discovers something. Is there anyway to have that in multiplayer?

Was the advanced start set up differently on the new game? My area seemed way different than on the other game. Are we supposed to do anything different with the advanced start than playing single player?
