I wouldn't count that as a big portion of the game. It has nothing to do with the story and is never necessary. It's there solely to give people who want (or for whatever reason need) to grind a place where they can go to rather than just wandering around the map hoping to hit worthwhile...

Don't know what you mean by "don't level up your items," you DO what to level up your items, i.e. SMG, hand guns, and grenades. I'm not sure what "optional but unnecessary" means as I completed all of the missions on my playthrough (and I recommend that you do), but if you use items...
