meh I'm planning on skipping this and saving my money for the actual game
Yea I'd rather just hold my excitement for the final game. Probably won't be out until 2009 though.

im a huge fan of GT5...

but i will not support them in this act of douchebaggery.

making us pay for a freaking demo. what the hell were they thinking?

They aren't making you pay, thats your choice. Its a fan service to release what they believe is highly representative of the final game early for people who really want to play it.

Hear hear. I ain't paying $40 for a demo. If I did, I'd just be an assgamer.
wait.. so this isn't the full game... what the hell is GT5 Prologue.. I'm confused...
GT5P is an intro to GT5. It still has a decent amount of content and is budget priced ($40 is considered budget next gen unfortunately). Last gen, SCE released GT4P, but never brought it stateside (it came to Europe and Japan, at budget price). There was also a GT Concept Car game released after GT3. Basically, there are several GT games, but only the main ones usually come stateside. SCEA is bringing this game stateside since there will not be a GT5 for a very long time, GT does have some popularity here (not as big as in Europe though). The game still has 60 cars (more than some racers), 5 tracks (which can be reversed and do have multiple routes), and it does have online play (which no GT game ever had). This was mostly intended to be a download, but they are releasing it in stores because:
-Not everyone has a credit card.
-Not every with a PS3 has internet connection (This is true, because I come across many with a PS3 at stores, but they have no internet).
-To most casuals, downloads are non-existent. For someone to see an actual case of GT5P on the store shelf, makes them more interested than hearing about a download (which is part of the reason I wish Namco Bandai sold Tekken 5: DR Online on a disc).
Bad Idea. Go buy the Diablo 2 battlechest and you'll end up playing it until you forget about GT5, then GT5 will be out and no worries :)
GT5 is still a long ways off (In 2009).

I feel like just waiting for the main game in 2009... I think having a prologue in the US might not been such a good idea because by the time GT5 comes out, people are going to feel that they've already gotten it, which would reduce some sales of GT5. ALso, for those who buy both versions, its like you bought GT5 for 99.98. because everything thats in GT5P, will be included in GT5, so its not like you're getting something extra...

Can the cars in GT5p receive damage?

Can the cars in GT5p receive damage?
GT fans will buy both. Many people are impatient and will buy it now, regardless. What you accomplish in GT5P, can be transferred over to GT5, so it's like a continuation. Many games have been sold in multiple parts and still did well, so I'm not worried. If you choose to wait, it's only your loss, because there won't be a full GT5 game for a very long time (It might not even come until 2010). The creator said himself, to create a car in GT1-2 took one day. GT3-4 took around a week. To design a car in GT5 takes around 3 months (due to inside and out being created). When you multiply by several number of cars, it will be quite a while until we see a GT5. GT5P gets GT5 started by getting the graphic engine started, online play started, and so on (It's kind of like a checkpoint of development).

Sales won't be affected. In Europe for example, GT4P sold 2 million copies, while GT4 sold 6 million. GT3 sold around the same GT4 did. The U.S. saw a big drop in GT3 to GT4 sales, but a lot of that had to do with no PS2 bundled version.

GT5P does not have damage though.

Yep, definitely picking it up here....

I dislike the whole argument that it's a "demo." It has 5 courses (10 layouts), over 60 cars, couple of game modes, 16 player online... and budget priced. Yeah, if they released it @ $60 sure I probably wouldn't get it.

I'm interested in seeing the final car list .
If it favors Japanese cars too much I'll probably pass .

It should have at least 25% US cars .

What's funny about those specs is that's all you'd get in many racing games.

Now I must really have this.
If it was out right now I'd buy it. But I'll be too busy playing GTA4 in april.

I'll just wait for real GT5.
It comes out before GTA4, so you'll have time.

GT5 won't even be out until 2009, maybe as long as 2010 if you wait.

To any and all GT faithful that plan to get this...

Avoid it like the plague. You buying this demo/beta is telling developers that it is OK to pay ridiculous amounts for a snapshot of the retail game. You are saying it's OK for us, the gamers, to be beta testers. I can not express how against this Prologue that I am... Just do us all a favor and avoid it. $40 is ridiculous to be a test dummy for the online, the new engine and modes/features... Shame on Polyphony to charge 40 now and 60 later for the GT faithful :bomb:

Oh, I have been on of the biggest GT fanboys out there and even though I was more disappointed with the later versions not having online modes and what not... I still think this is ridiculous. When GT5/P retail was sold in Japan it had EU and US servers to see how things worked out. Now it is coming stateside with more servers opening up. You are being a beta tester for the retail version. Shame on you Polyphony to rely on the GT faithful to spend $100 for GT5 whole...

I'm really on the fence with this. I enjoy GT but the Prologue's have always pissed me off. At least when GT4P came out I found it in Japan for like 1980 yen (about $17 at the time). Now this comes along at more than twice that.

I'm 99% sure I'll skip this unless Sony decided to be cool and include a $20-30 off coupon for GT5 in the package.

That would be the ONLY way I would bite on this... $20 is the highest I would spend on this but I am so against the Prologue I don't even think I would bit for $30 off

Europe and Japan received these in the past but the U.S. didn't.

Let me just explain, for PD to create a new GT these days (they had to remove online from the 4th to get it done on time), it takes several years, which is why there are smaller games in-between. The creator himself even said it takes 4-6 months to design ONE car on the PS3. And I doubt they're going to stop doing this because GT4P sold over 2 million copies worldwide (and never came stateside.

This is a game PS3 really needs and I expect it to do well.

But I don't care because I want a GT, and it will take forever to get one anway.

That's because last gen, a budget game was $20-$30. This gen, a budget game is $40. Don't be surprised if PS3 GH games are that price too. Also, development of GT5P wasn't exactly the same as GT4P (more like 2-3 times the amount).

I understand that and likewise when they released those over in EU and JAP regions I prayed that would never come stateside... unfortunately it did. I get that it takes them longer to create a car and to work things out but that's part of the game they are playing and more marketing jibber jabber than anything. More you work on something, easier it is, easier it gets, easier it becomes with new techniques that speeds things up. Why should I be part of their master plan to milk my pockets of a demo of a game? Is $60/unit sold not enough?

To each his own. I am a GT fanboy but I refuse to pay for a demo and to become a beta tester.

A secret from the net has been confirmed by Sony:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/03/17/ferrari-f2007-gt5-prologues-god-mode/

Sometimes even the best kept secrets seem to find their way out - that’s just the nature of the beast - so it was no surprise (at least not much) when co-workers started to email us links to leaked Gran Turismo 5 Prologue screenshots… and the rumor mill it had kick-started.

Amongst the thousands of questions asked, let’s tackle a few to start: first, this is indeed the Scuderia Ferrari F2007; second, that is the actual Ferrari red as sanctioned by the Ferrari team; and last but not least, the Ferrari F2007 will be available at all Gran Turismo Ferrari dealerships for 2 million game credits.

With slick graphics, a 2.4 liter 90-degree V8 engine and the amazing physics of a F1 vehicle, the Ferrari F2007 is truly a beauty. Driving it is an adrenaline-pumping, hair-standing, goose-bumping experience… I hope everyone gets to experience this “God Mode within Gran Turismo”. Over the last couple weeks we’ve been driving this car in our offices every single day, with the volume cranked up… there is nothing more soothing than the high-rev scream of the Scuderia speeding down the Fuji straight…

More to come on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue soon. In the meantime, check out these new screen shots.

It's also mentioned in the comments that in-game chat and private races w/friends won't be in the final game, but are planned for a patch.

When you say in-game chat, is it vocal or just typed?

I pre-ordered Prologue. Can't wait to play it!

Since we can take our Prologue stats and export them to the real GT5 game later, will you do it or start from scratch again?

I'm assuming vocal because I don't think IM's are a good idea for an online racing game.

What's up, CAGs?

Is anyone picking up GT5P?

And what's the final word on multiplayer aspects of the game? I keep hearing it's not in Prologue, but then I heard that it is...

Anyways, I'm thinking of picking this up...even though I still suck at Forza 2

I'm not picking up and won't get into why and my dislike of a paid beta. GT5P does in fact have 16 player online racing, I believe 72 cars and 6 tracks with various configurations. Tuning only, no modding as in you can tweak stock settings but you can't upgrade the suspension. I am not sure if you can upgrade the tires, that might be the only thing you can upgrade.
I'm not picking up and won't get into why and my dislike of a paid beta.
I have the same opinion. Either put out a release in a timely manner, or don't hype it so much that you're putting out a half-game for full price to delay your release for another year.

What exactly is there thinking behind doing this? Knowing that this isn't even the real game is a turn-off. So what should be my incentive to go out and buy this game? Unless I'm someone that has to buy every game or is OBSESSED with GT then I can't imagine picking it up.

It's not full price. It's $40.

I've had the JP version since it came out and have played for probably 20 hours. There was an update that gives it all of the extra cars/tracks in the US version and it looks like there's about 4x as many events to complete now. $40 is a steal for this demo, if you're into sim racers.

So much hate.

They've always released a 'Prologue' prior to the true sequel. It's a taster of what's to come, and yeah it is mostly for GT fans.

Hmmmm...you guys bring up some good points here...it's just....IT LOOKS SO NICE!

But seriously, buying this IS saying that it's okay for publishers to put stuff like this out...but out of desperation for a good racing game on PS3, I may pick it up :(

The trolling in here is sick.

It needs to be cleaned up.

If you don't want to buy it thats fine, but don't push your views and ideas on the ones who do.

Man, this game is dirty........ On one hand I really want to try out this game with my G25 Wheel and really take this game out on the track...........

On the other hand, paying for a demo (esp $40) is just plain dumb. I know it's an extended demo and all with many features, but seriously.... we all know the full game is going to be this and more. And paying $40 now for 30% of what I'm going to pay $60 for later is just retarded. And it's not a value matter, it's the fact that you're paying for something now and re-paying for part of it again later. It's like how I bought flow and if I went out and bought the flow bundle on psn as well.... just doesn't make sense.
In reality a more reasonable thing would be for them to give this for free to people who pre-order.

Oh well.... what the hell do they care. fuck decency, this is a business and they know people will pay for it; many already have already in other regions. All hail the mighty Polyphony digital donation fund!

I should have a copy, maybe two, by Thursday or Friday. I'm not sure if you guys have checked it out, but two of the producers of GT5P hosted a chat to discuss the game and development on GT5. The transcript can be found here.

The Cliffnotes:
-GT5 will not be out until Summer 09 at the earliest.
-Though not offering any specifics on DLC, they did assure that fans will be surprised at what they have planned for the future.
-PD plans to support the game with updates and patches until GT5's release.
-There will almost definitely be a way to transfer cars and credits to GT5 over to GT5 when that comes out.
-You will start out with 35k in credits at the beginning of the game.
-GT.TV will feature videos of BBC's Top Gear and Best Motoring along with its own unique content.
-Many people on the team love F1, so that may be one of the avenues that future expansions take, though right now, licensing issues are the main issues with that front right now.
-They have been working on car damage, but they want to make sure it's done right first.
-There's no official support of the G25 wheel, but they think it still works anyway.
-The new Logitech wheel that was made for Prologue features on-the-fly adjustments to brake and torque balance.
-Polyphony Digital custom-builds their own tools to make GT's graphics.
-One headlight of a car in GT5 Prologue has as many polygons as an entire car in either GT3 or GT4.
-You will only be able to race against others in your region, but leaderboards are global.
-There's no support for private rooms and voice chat yet, but will be added in future updates.
-There's no photo mode in Prologue.
-The main difference between the downloadable and retail versions of GT5 Prologue? All of the movies have been removed from the downloadable version to lessen download times, but they can be downloaded in the PS Store instead. That and the Beyond the Apex video, which is about 20 minutes long, that's exclusive to the retail version.

I am really on the fence about this game. It looks awesome and has more content than most of the racing games I have now. But spending 40 on this now, and 60 on the full game later..... not much about that says "Cheap Ass Gamer" to me. Myabe I will pick this up and be happy with the price and only pick up the full version if this game makes me wet each and every time I turn it on.

Well, it's more like this, early estimates say that the full GT5 won't be out until Summer 2009. That's more than a year later.

Prologue means we can play now, and still get downloadable updates as the game progresses for those who need their racing fix.

Well, I bought it and got home around Noon EST. Still have not played the game b/c of the mandatory install and the patch d/l. The patch is about a third of the way through so I still have like 20 mins left. I am a huge fan of PD but this is pretty much fucked.

Edit- K, all is well now. The game is sick. One dissapointment I have, and Frisky mentioned it, is that I was under the impression the the Top Gear and Best Motoring would be available at launch? The only GT TV items were Opening Movie and one other video. If someone could clear that up for me that would be cool. All in all, the game is easily worth 40 bucks.
