That’s the nice thing about statistics, they’re just numbers until someone tries to apply context to them.

Just don’t leave any bad reviews on my book on Amazon!
Anyways, with the gaming audience aging I would think that the M and AO ratings on games would increase as well.... But you make a very good point with the flood of Spongebob and Hannah Montana games hitting the market diluting the overall market.
This is awesome, I can’t wait for it.
I haven’t beaten the game yet, but my goal is to beat it before this comes out.
Pie + Charts = ?
It’s interesting to see that only 6% are M… Now I wonder how much % of the E rated games are from Nintendo…

I really like how you can check out the videos in Theatre mode of other players playing Timed mode, so you can learn their tricks for getting that 24x achievement. Too bad my videos are busted..

I always interpreted the codes as Easy, Taxing and Meaty. The ESRB versions make a lot more sense.

I agree that there are more crappy games coming out but I feel that is true for all ratings but you’re right probably that more crappy E rated games are coming out. Also it seems that many games that would have gotten an M rating due to violence and blood are now getting teen ratings. I am looking forward to “good” mature games that are mature not because of the many ways of death included but due to actual mature themes and situations.

Maybe they’ll have a bonus mini-game where you can paint Eater-X’s face.

"Here is my issue though, yes M-rated games have dropped from 8% of the market to 6%, but the question is “why”. It doesn’t feel like there are less M games for my dollar.”
I think that a lot of it is perception. I don’t even look at ratings. My game purchases are selected by what I think I will enjoyable. And when I actually buy a game in a store (as opposed to simply ordering it online), I always know what I want, so I don’t browse. All rising flow of casual “E” game simply isn’t noticed.

If Eating was a Sport, I'd Be Michael Jordan

the sad part is I might actually buy this...especially if it has the mini game misfit13b suggested.

Your Review Powers Are Useless Here

Some people don’t get it. The Wii is a FAMILY system. When your wife and 6 year old and 4 year old can play a game of Mario Party 8 together, you won’t think it sucks. Yes I am also a hardcore gamer.

I’m guessing the majority of those “E” rated games are from the sudden influx of pet games on the Wii that end with a “Z.”

Hey Wombat, where can one get the codes to unlock XBLA games? I run a site and I would like to give away an XBLA game, but I haven’t found out where to get those unlock codes. Any idea?
P.S. This is also my contest entry. Rez HD FTW!

From "As American As ESRB Pie":

Aren’t we in the middle of a casual games “explosion”? With all the puzzle games and party games coming out now - for every system, not just the Wii - this isn’t really surprising.

I agree with other commenters, though - I’d like to see this chart weighted by sales figures. I bet that M gets very big, then.

They should open up a new franchise for this game where a gamer could pick up 59 hot dogs from his local MLE shop and eat them within 40 minutes to pass level 1. Just what we need to curb America’s obscene obesity epidemic. Not that that’s a bad thing…

I want more AO titles! Ok, any would be good.

As far as shovelware ... Unfortunately, too many poor games are bought by grandparents as stocking stuffers. Adults can take the time to read reviews on mature titles.

Mass Effect DLC Coming March 10th

DLC sounds awesome, I wasn’t expecting to see Mass Effect DLC anytime soon! 400 points for 90 minutes and 50 achievement points is also a pretty good value. I’ve got to get back to finishing up the game sometime so this news might get me back into playing more.

Mass Effect DLC Coming March 10th

At first I was a bit wary about this DLC, since I was afraid that it would be another lame “Clean out four of the same bases” type of side mission, with Batarians serving as skin changes for Cerberus/Geth. But if it turns out that this is a full-fledged mission on the level of Feros and Noveria, with dialogue segments and a penultimate boss battle, then I will be happy.

In the past, to me at least, Bioware has been the kings of downloadable content. For Neverwinter Nights, they pretty much defined the term with their 10+ hour quest modules, with the later modules going as far as adding notable features and new settings to the game. For Knights of the Old Republic, they later added the Yavin station (Merchant) and corresponding quests to the game, though not containing the level of content as the NWN modules, was still pretty good for a free download. I’d even go as far to say that I wish the current DLC marketplace was more like Bioware’s past offerings; paying for semi-expansion pack-level add-ons to the original game, not shelling out cash for a few stinkin’ maps or a few weapons and quirks. Here’s to hoping that EA’s influence doesn’t sully Bioware’s good name in the DLC field.

Commented on Mass Effect DLC: http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/gamesblog/more/mass_effect_dlc_coming_march_10th/

While I generally don’t have much interest in fee-based DLC, I think this is one game where it can be integrated quite seemlessly and expand the universe (literally) without seeming out of place. It makes sense to simply have a few more locations to go to in a game where given the freedom to simply pick and choose where to go whenever you want from your ship. Oh and for those wondering, I’m pretty sure that this will be selectable like any other planet from your ship’s navigational map, so if you’ve already beaten the game you’ll have to get back to the point of being able to select your destination to access it.

This should allow them to have the freedom to come up with new ideas for places and situations in the game that they otherwise might not be able to explore between the release of the first game and the sequel. The price is reasonable as well, although I do hope that after a few more addons that they’ll release an expansion disc or “gold edition” Mass Effect in stores.

It’s a shame they couldn’t offer this kind of thing for KOTOR2 so that they could re-impliment the features and locations they had cut from the game due to time constraints (although technically Bioware didn’t make KOTOR2).
