I think that's the best idea I've heard in a LONG time. Have a forum for people who have been here for say, over a year (for example). There's an easy way to set it up too...the "USERGROUPS" option. Instead of making it an automatic membership (which would probably be a bear to code) have it so that once you reach that landmark, you can PM a mod or CheapyD (or the head of the "established members" group) for entry. If someone becomes a problem, revoke their privilege to post in the group. It would certainly give well-behaved established members a more relaxed environment to post in.
 
For what it's worth, I think this is a brilliant idea. It'd definitely cut down on the complaining about the boards having gone downhill, and it could be a lot of fun.

As long as the board doesn't become the CAG equivalent of LUE, it'll be a good thing.
 
while i think its a good idea.. and would defintely cut down on the complaining.... but remember its some of the established members also that causes some of the problems.
 
I think it would be a great Idea, but only for people over a year? That's a VERY short list, and would exclude many of the established regulars. Maybe a 6 or 8 month stay would be better.

If we go with WSB's idea of having people PM mods or CheapyD for access, a shorter time limit would make sense.

I don't think that automatic eligibility is a good idea, though. Just look at LUE...

Well, that's why I said "for example." :razz: Either way, now that membership is over 20k, I think it'd be a good idea to do a little something for those who have stuck around for the long term.

True, but if anyone becomes too much of a problem, they can easily have their posting access to that forum removed.

Anyways, I would probably be too scared to post in there anyways, for fear of being owned by the CAG gods. :(

It already exists with the user levels and post counts. Not to that degree, no, but it's still there.

Beyond that, we've got a ton of people that lurk on the forums. Look at all of the registered users with zero to five posts - literal thousands. Maybe this could encourage people to contribute to the community, be that a good thing or bad...

i think it should be everyone thats been over here(and maybe voting if needed in the exclusive club)


i know if i was in some exclusive club i would look for ALOT of deals and any way i could help out. but we dont want people getting cocky over it(i dont think that would happen)
 
yeah, by invite only would be nice... that way someone who isn't very nice (but has been here for a while) isn't automatically able to ruin the cool-kids club.

I supposed it's a good idea, with all the flaming and rudeness around here.

Usually I don't like segregation and stuff, but I think the forums here are getting a tad bit out of hand.

Hmmm...I didn't think about it like that. I was thinking of it more as an off-topic social forum for senior members, not to hoard deals.

See, that's why even though it was initially Theenternal's idea, I posted it here for discussion. It's good seeing all the different points of view.

And those who say it's going to be another LUE, possibly, depending on how it's handled. If the moderators and staff treat it just like any other forum, it'll stay civil. If a hands-off approach is taken, sure, I can see it being a free-for-all. I doubt counting threads or threads asking, "How long is ur wenis?" will fly in any forum on here, regardless.

Either way, I don't think I like the idea as much if the intention turns into hoarding deals until the senior members get their fill, then throwing the scraps to everyone else. That's not a good way to go. I was simply thinking it as something fun and social.

that is a great idea on how to do it.

Just because you have been here a year does not mean you are not a total ass

and certain people post awesome deals and they should be recognized for their effort (someone like wlau)

I think it's a great idea. The invitation only thing would have to be worked out though. Some concerns - First, I'd be afraid of not getting one :(. Second, if everyone who got in was just able to hand them out it would get big really fast and I could also see people using it as currency like a gmail invite or ipod referral is used sometimes...

i dont think he ment any member of the forum gets to invite nyone, i believe he ment it to sound like the only way to get in is to be invited by the man himself.

no man, im not talking about hoarding, im talking about felling like a bigger part of the community, thats why i would post more deals-in the deals thread. not in the exclusive thread

That's the best idea of all. Let CheapyD handle it, and base it on quality, not quantities.

Of course, with a fight club-eque rule.

The first rule of the CAGgroup is that you don't talk about the CAGgroup.

Tie in a punishment scheme, for example: bragging about membership is immediate grounds for expulsion from the group, inciting "class wars" is as well.

This sounds like an awesome idea. I really like it. cheapy should probably handle the affairs in terms of invites, etc. I don't know if having to have been here a minimum is a good idea. I for one don't know if I would make it but that's beside the point :wink:, some regulars have been here but are really jerks. Cheapy could also elect some other mods to just patrol that board and make sure everything is in order so that it doesn't become another LUE. I say that he elect some other mods because than it can take some of the stress and strain from the other mods checking the other areas. I'm sure we would all be cool but you never know, somebody could get out of hand. I really only now post in the OTTs. I do post here and there and in some of the deal threads but even in those, they are getting kind of annoying because people are just whining, beingrud, flaming, etc. You try to make a good point and broaden people's thought on the matter and you get five gazillion posts against you by the same people that were just arguing. I think it would be an extension of the OTTs in a way..

This is the kind of thing that would make me stop coming here. Then instead of seeing random flames in posts, you would see "elite" people constantly reminding others of their greatness.

Im thinking that the users that would be in that would NOT be the same a-holes that would rub it in your face. My main thought (if invited) was for a bomb shelter of sorts when the huge deals hit (BF, CC $5, cheap hookers) so there would be a place to mingle and talk, yet not have every other thread be is the r0x0rs!!!

Hey, I've been here a year (almost) :) . Even if we did this, I'm sure there would still be some asshats that have been here for a year that could still ruin it for everyone else. I like the exclusive deals idea, like giving first dibs to the ones that contribute to this site.
