Ace Combat 5 (PS2)

Inmate #10943

CAGiversary!
ACE COMBAT 5 (PS2)

Well here's a game you'll either "Love" or "Like" or maybe even "Hate" depending on what you're looking for in a game.
If you're expecting a flight sim you're going to be sadly disappointed. Ace Combat 5 (AC5) is an Action Game
that involves unrealistic flight.

There's a multitude of aircraft to fly once you unlock them. Including the Falken which has a laser gun. D'OH!
That's right, a laser gun that has 14 shots. Really stupid! You have to believe the aircraft engineers that designed this plane could not find a way to have the laser recharge for unlimited firing. But hey, on the bright side you do get up to 97 missiles (now that's realistic) on your aircraft and (on most difficulty levels) unlimited gun ammo. You'll need all the firepower you can muster because it's non-stop action with an overwhelming number of enemies. So if you're looking for action you'll definitely find it in the 30 missions.

The multitude of aircraft mentioned above are not that much different to fly. If you like the F-15 for example, you'll see it in the hangar, in the game with external view and in the so-so film replay after the mission. Other than that it's hard to tell whether you're flying an F-15 or an F-14.

You do get wing persons (2 guys and 1 gal) which you can give commands to. They do OK but are extremely annoying. You have to listen to their totally stupid pacifistic rants during the heat of battle. They go on and on about how war is "bad" blah blah blah. Why did the join the military as a fighter pilot if they're so anti-war!

But there's plenty of action as you and your 3 pacifist comrades take on the entire military might of your enemy. You'll blow up bunkers, sink ships, shoot down hundreds of enemy aircraft, and fly through tunnels (gasp) ala Star Wars final assault on the Death Star.

The game is fun the first time you play it but, you have to replay it 3 or 4 times to unlock all the aircraft and to get the money to pay for them.
If you played any of the prior Ace Combat games then you know what you're getting here. If you liked the previous games in the series then you'll enjoy this one.

There is a "Bundle" for AC5 that includes a Throttle and Flightstick nearly identical in appearance to the Saitek X45. This 2 piece controller is known as a Hand-On-Throttle-And-Stick (HOTAS) in flight-sim lingo. The Bundle which includes the game and a large cloth military patch sells for around $120. The HOTAS adds to the "immersion experience" in the game. There is no calibration available for the Stick and your aircraft drifts/rolls slowly to the right - which is pretty annoying. Especially when you're attempting to do a mid-air refueling of which there are 2 in the game. There are only a couple of games that currently support the HOTAS so unless you're a die-hard AC fan, I'd pass on getting the HOTAS.
Also, not all the buttons, switches, and knobs have any function in the game.

As far as aerial action games go, I personally liked "Crimson Skies" a lot more.

I'd give AC5 6 out of 10

If you don't become anal about the game, it's an awesome game. A lot of things in the game aren't realistic, it's not supposed to be. This isn't Janes, So I don't understand why people get pissed about unlimited ammo, and 200 billion missles. It's taken everything from the other Ace Combats and enhanced it, The story is more involved this time and in my opinion much better. Sure the guys aren't really into war and complain a lot about how crappy war is but that's just makes the story richer. If you gripe over the fact that their fighter pilots and don't seem to dig war, your going to get annoyed very easy, you also have to consider the context of the story into the reason why they don't really like the war, which i'm not going to get into since it would spoil it for people.

I'd say AC5 is much, much better than AC4 in every field. My only gripe is that you can't RTB (Return To Base) but the Unlimited gun ammo balances that out. AC5 didn't disappoint me, this is coming from a long time fan. In my book 4 stars.
Any comparisons to AC 4 ? Sounds like the same game to me.....except for the "laser" (insert mocking dr. evil voice here)
I have all 5 games in the Ace Combat series and i like AC4 better than AC5. Only thing is AC4 has fewer missions.

You love it and I liked it.

Seeing as how you really like AC5 if you haven't played "Crimson Skies" you ought to check it out. It's an extremely well-put-together aerial action game.

Ouch, harsh. I give it a 7 because the gameplay is solid, not spectacular, wingmen/wingwomen are nice but could have been better. Graphics are a upgrade from the last one, in short spectacular.

I heart Ace Combat 5
I liked it a lot more than the OP. I must say I loved the Flightstick 2, as it makes it feel just like piloting a real airplane. My AC 5 review: http://gamesdomain.yahoo.com/ps2/ace_combat_5_the_unsung_war/review/51127
I also got the Bundle. The Flightstick is really great for that for that "immersive experience" but that drift/roll to the right drove me nuts when I was attempting mid-air refueling. Also the vibration was really weak.

Surprisingly - the Flightstick actually works better in AC4. No drifting plus it works smoother. No vibration though. Some have said you can use it in "Lethal Skies II". But they report no vibration. Don't know. Don't have that game.

To add to that "immersive experience I got the "Mushaburui Stand-Alone Flight Sim Cockpit" from Saitek. Pretty Cool :!:

OOOOOOOh I want, I want

I first saw that chair at Far East Gaming and here's what they wanted:
"Stand alone Flight Simulator Chair
Price: $349 + S/H"

Plus they wanted another $25 for the cushion. YOIKS!

When I got the chair from Saitek ($99 + $8.95 S/H) I was surprised to find the cushion in the box. :D Overall I'd say it was a good deal.

The chair is great with the TV and PS2 games but - it's too low to use with PC games. Have to figure a work-around for that.

I wrote IRGurus about "Heroes Of The Pacific" (comes out next March for PC and PS2) and asked if it will support the flightstick and they said it "probably" will. Hope so!

I played Crimson skies back on the PC a few years ago. Loved the game, but AC5 is in my opinion a better game. Just my opinion, doesn't have to be on par with yours, that's life
